- This is a sad and painful sight to see for anyone who had the pleasure to enjoy the wonderful food and service provided by the Hruska Family at the Dam store.
If you are able to support them in any way, a go fund me has been setup for them:

These poor people. Losing both their house AND their store must be devastating. I wish them a quick recovery!
And their land
Their is no quick recovery unless political regressives are involved, in parallel with the requisite grifting.
they will get paid big
@@thomaslabantt6625no they won’t lol!!! The city or county just took everything from them and probably don’t give a damn what happens to them.
My heart go's out to the family of the Dam Store, heart breaking. Prayers for all.
This is not considered an act of god, this is a man made Train Wreck. I’m saddened for the people that worked to keep there property as beautiful as it was.
It GREAT to see Blue Earth County getting equipment there days after the Damage was done... Good Job Fellas, You all deserve to get your ars' fired for the quality work you did to save the Dam owned by Blue Earth County Citizens.
Yes, agreed. Thanks to weather modification by the military with the intention to destroy infrastructure.
Ofc it isn't an act of god, he doesn't exist ;). Besides, he usually floods the entire planet and kills everyone when he goes postal.
The fluck you talking about? The equipment is there removing the pie store and restaurant. All the equipment in the world wasn't going to stop what happened.
100% correct!
Men think they're smarter than nature. Nature finds a way. Always.
Piss poor planning and maintenance. You've got to pay more attention to the surroundings, not just the single point (the dam).
Spent much time at the Dam store, the dam, and the campground. Devastated! Nicest folks, historic! A hidden gem, wiped out! Beyond sad! And yes, humans failed here!
Yeah the humans running the state
no they didn't.
Be happy with what you have while you have it, for one day, the river may change it's mind.
I don't know this place or the people. I have a touch of sadness for you. I hope you rebuild and celebrate what was and what will be.
This is the best footage yet. Thank you. I really feel for this family and the community. It's hard to lose a generational landmark that brought so much of them together. I hope they rebuild somewhere new. I'd make a special trip out of my way on one of my frequent road trips up there to support them.
i am hopeful the family will rebuild the store and their home in another area with help and once again serve delicious food. A door may close, but another one opens. Many people will assist.
Hopefully ❤
😂, it won't be called the Dam store. 😂
They could call it a dam shame. @@billybrown7953
Nope itll be the damn store next@billybrown7953
They may just call it the dam store. They plan to rebuild. They were hoping to just move the store but with the cliff so close it was too dangerous for heavy equipment.
so many amazing memories of pie, burgers, and downright amazing times with friends on bike rides for some Dam Pie.
This is not a video of the Dam Store Removal; it's a video of the debris pile after the store was removed/brought down.
That’s what I was thinking, I hope you’re right!
Pretty sloppy job of it to
@@johnsmith6368 I agree. Absolutely no organisation, Now they will need a second time to remove it all with another excavator and trucks to cart to a landfill. I just hope the owners had time to remove everything from within the building .
@geradkavanagh8240 They did, They had family and friends help get everything out of the store couple of days ago
This was best case scenario. At least they could empty the store and salvage what they could before a controlled demolition that prevented even more debris in the river. The alternative is even worse. My heart goes out to these people. This has to be like losing part of your family history. Probably only 2nd to losing a loved one.
It's overcautious. The bank hasn't eroded any more for days. That white thing has been right on the edge.
Thanks for the explanation I was looking for!
@@snowmiaow they got a good financial offer to get out now?
I think you totally nailed it. = and put it into words.
Exactly. The new cliff is unstable, and there will undoubtedly be a major construction project in the immediate area soon to stabilize the bridge and deal with the dam. The store was in danger of falling into the river and adding to the debris downstream, and would likely have to be removed to make way for the inevitable construction. Sad to see this lovely spot so desecrated but Climate Change has much, much more in store for us puny, foolish humans. We will forget the Dam Store when the first Cat 5 hurricanes start hitting this summer.
I'm all the way over in Australia but I live in an iconic mountaintop village (well, outside of it) in Queensland so I appreciate both natural beauty and local man-made landmarks. We are country so we feel for our neighbours and kinfolk, this hurt me.
I am so sorry you all are going thru this and I feel especially for the family that lost their home, their business and their beautiful slice of paradise. Honestly, I feel for you folks; I can't imagine what you are going through.
Heartbreaking. Much love to you all up North. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. 🙏❤
I grew up 3 minutes away from the dam. We used to drive on the bridge over the dam when I was a kid. Absolutely heartbreaking and Jim warned about this two years ago, but it fell on deaf ears. Praying for them.
You might as well get rid of the dam now.
This is so, so sad. We have prayed that the store survives this tragedy and to see this now is such a devastation! I do feel for the family and all the happy times and history that that small store gave.❤️
@andersd8956 the damn was clogged with trash. Hard to work at 100% when the holes are full
If they don’t repair that riverbank, the meander will just keep growing.
They don't seem to get that in 2024 that is absolutely possible. What a joke of a response.
A portion of the dam will have to be removed in order to restore the original course to divert the flow away from the scouring. This is not a problem that can be sorted out by dumping tons of rip rap into the void. It will take a lot of planning and hard work to resolve.
@@mariannorton4161What exactly were they supposed to do to stop the flow?
Even IF they could repair it, which I highly doubt -it being a, what, 30+ foot drop into a seething river? - who's gonna pay for that?
It ain't a 'National Disaster' is it, so I can't see Federal Funding coming in, especially as the dam generators haven't worked for 20-odd years . . . .
I thought they were going to move the house not remove the house
my heart goes out to the people who owned the store
This is a classic case of municipal/state funding mismanagement
Either way, it the incompetent government.
wrong
It was due to heavy rains . The dam has been there for many years.
@@joshuacoldwaterThey should have put municipal/county/state funds. We all know about counties.
Agree. They dilly dallied repairing the dam, now the erosion has stopped for the time being and they tear down the property instead of moving it. I wonder if they paid the family for this eminent domain move.
I’m so sorry to see this store had to go
It looks like the cliff just north of where that trailer behind the store used to be is eroding faster than towards the store. The gravel road is gone!
I noticed that too from yesterday. There was a line of trees on the river side of the gravel road, and now they’re gone.
You can see a few of them at the bottom of the slide in this footage
The store and the trailer were torn down, just in case to keep it from falling in the river. That’s what that backhoe is doing, tearing it down and bearing it.
@@MrJrsdtsBurying it = still going into the river. It’ll just go in in pieces instead of whole.
@@MrJrsdts I don't thing they were burying it. I think they were pushing it into a pile to load on a truck to take to the dump.
@@nicotti Correct.
In my opinion, this erosion should not keep happening. The dam should’ve been destroyed at least three days ago to keep the erosion from continuing to happen.
Exactly. An old dam can be replaced with a newer one. Instead, lose a historic home, property and whatever else gets swept away. The dam should of been destroyed to prevent this.
And flood Mankato every time it rains........................
@@MB-rr1fbis it flooded now? The dam will only hold back so much water, does the river go dry downstream until it rains.
@@matthewmoore7447 good points however according to the national weather service, the river is cresting just slightly above 1965 flood levels in Chaska and the Levees are holding up very well, so that’s a great accomplishment in my opinion.
@@matthewmoore7447 I have to disagree with you though on the ecological disaster part. The area has seen way worse flooding in the past. Especially when the waters from Lake Agassiz were draining through the area at the end of the last Ice Age.
Mother nature reclaiming back her land...........sad to see those people lose everything.
One thing is for sure, the dam didn't "fail", as so many proclaim
Nope the dam didn't fail. Blue earth county did.
The dam failed. Its purpose was to maintain a reservoir. The fact that house and store are gone, plus all the other damage, is a symptom of that failure.
well yes and no. The physical concrete structure didn't but all dams are supposed to have emergency spillways that can handle the extra water. Whatever spillway this had obviously failed.

@@SHAREMediaBK upvoted with my alt account also cheers
I was hoping they could move it, but obviously not. I hope they rebuild elsewhere.
Yeah, I have a feeling there was just not enough time, and the age of the structure probably didn’t help either
@@SHAREMediaBK and with the ground saturation, they couldn't maneuver equipment so close to the cliff. Plus where would they move it to? I'm sure that was a factor.
It was a decrepit old building anyway and probably wouldn't have survived a move.
@@reignman30 Perhaps, but the family had a lot of memories within those walls.
The County or the City needs to reimburse them and build them their new buildings.
Aww they tore it down. The water looks like it's receded considerably. I think I'd have waited, they may find out later that they lucked out and now the store is history, if not the old store could have at least went out with its boots on.
The problem was that, even though the river may have slowed down THIS YEAR, the same high river levels could occur again NEXT YEAR putting the store back into jeopardy again. Best to go ahead and tear it down (to keep the debris out of the river) and rebuild elsewhere.
You’re making the assumption that the land is stable. I very much doubt that it is.
@@DJFPhantomPhan Waterlogged land (that water seeped into every tiny little opening under that ground) tends to slide downhill. And that store was sitting right near the edge (see you tube videos about cliff collapses on the west coast)

Keep turning old dams back to mother nature the way we found them
I'm all for removing old dams and restoring rivers, but... this probably isn't the preferred method.
A family loses their livelihood because some people screwed up. They knew the dam was bad.
They'll be fine. They still have the contents of their home and business, money from the county's purchase of the property and insurance. They'll rebuild if they want to.
why must there always be blame? I find that pointless here. Everything ever made all have a failing point if things get bad enough.
Why must there be blame? I see it more a case of bad luck than anything else.
The worst Dam management I have ever seen. And the poor people had to loose their home and their business because of it!! That debris should not be there. Did they think there would never be debris coming down river? Where would it go? Ed C
This is all sad . But it definitely shows that the powerful force of water flow is very destructive. I certainly understand that they are deciding to take and clear everything that is there away before it goes into the river .
Wrong. It shows the stupidity of those who left the damned dam after it was decomissioned. Could have been breached for the price of several sticks of dynamite. Instead devastation to this home and business and now the dam has to be removed pronto.
Next year there will be a Casey's, Kum-n-Go, or a Dollar General there
Where? Floating in the river xD?
Oh boy🎉...
I'm sure the army core of engineering or federal government bought the land. Eminent Domain is sometimes used by the government to acquire private property for public land. Such as building highways, etc.

Breaks my heart that it is gone, but I don't see that dirt bank as stable, so it was probably necessary. Still a terrible thing that a family lost their Home and Business of Decades. Perhaps they can rebuild in a nearby but new location. I've been canoeing starting at Rapidan MANY times. It is a wonderful area.
What a shame! Though not from Minnesota, it's these out-of-the-way places we love finding and enjoying with the locals when traveling to new places.
My heart goes out to this family ,they have lost everything .
Wow water is receding away from the store hadn’t got to driveway, it was totally unnecessary to destroy the store.
Maybe they determined with the erosion, re-opening the store would never be an option. They will also have a huge reconstuction and shoring up of the shore line in the future, with the store in the way. The store was done
I’ve been watching this from Ca since this all started. I was heartbroken when the house fell into the river, I was hoping the store was going to be safe. This is very sad. I wonder how far under the store and property this erosion goes. They might loose all of the property I hope the city compensates them for the entire loss and at a good price including taking in mind how many decades the store was there.
They had many years to put in an emergency spillway and failed to do so. It breaks my heart to see that store gone. No more pie for me. What a shame.
So sad. Prayers for all impacted.
It's really sad we used to fish around that area all the time as kids probably been in that store 100 times
Oh, that’s too bad. I was hoping they would get home movers in to move it back, not tear it down. So sad for the family that owned it.
Ya know, if they would have used that excavator on those trees that were clogging the dam up the water wouldn't have even went towards the house
They would have had to do that from the east side and it’s a big hill down to the dam and they didn’t know if the east side was safe .
So you would have had the balls the drive the excavator out onto the far side of the dam and start removing debris. How would you do that? Those logs and debris are tangled together in a solid mass with tons and tons of pressure from the water forced against it. On an already compromised dam that had issues as stated in a previous inspection. There were reasons for the safety of people who know a bit more about the situation that us armchair engineers on a CZcams channel
Incompetent management couldn't even keep the gates clear, pitiful !!!
The existing bridge @1:44 wasn't designed to have "no" water under it as well as the increase in water current .That's gonna be the next thing to go I assume
I'm so sorry guys.
😢😮 I'm sorry to see they had to tell the store down. Maybe they'll get a new one built somewhere else and they can start over again and go on with their lives. I guess next I'll tear the damn down boy. Did that water do a job on that one side around the way the cliff and the embankment and everything. I feel sorry for those people. They should try to go on the best way they can. May God be with him and God bless him. Thank you.
Greetings from the BIG SKY of Montana. We got hit in Yellowstone last year.
I hope they were at least able to get all their store stock out! To have SOMETHING to start over again way further back from the dam
Oh no! I thought they were moving the building. Not tearing it down! I’m so so sorry! I hope you were able to reopen elsewhere!
Um, the store owners have a good case to be made whole by the agency responsible for the upkeep of the dam.
The county bought the store from the owners before they demolished it.
@@ericfielding2540 they better have paid a decent rate for it. Currently the edge of the field is where the errosion is eating away, and it looks like the building would have been safe. Given the mailbox which was exposed yesterday hasn't been taken by the river yet.

Good thing is the Dam is holding on after all. sure the Bad rock of the base was strong enough. Great shots Brandon.Really no one gave us this view points.
It’s amazing how everyone whines about environmental impacts until a catastrophe like this happens because of government incompetence.
Government: Climate change is going to cause inestimable damage.
People: Don’t believe you!
Dam collapses
People: Governments fault!
Government had nothing to do with this. It was all the debris that blocked the open gates in the dam that caused this. It eroded the ground next to the dam until it broke through. Once that happened there was no stopping it. It destroyed so much so fast they had no choice but to evacuate and hope for the best.
@@lindadickson9547 I agree with you but dams are supposed to have emergency spillways. This one didn't or it was just a badly made one?
@@marcuswardle3180 hindsight, if climate change is real then make predictions that come true.... for once.
I know we are not privy to the disaster response team meetings. But this was heartbreaking.
It just seems to me that with the errosion slowed down there could have been other actions taken before the total demolition.
At least there was some compensation given by the county.
Interestingly the "waterfall" plung pool has moved back closer to the dam. I wonder if there's a further risk to it's structural integrity if this moves further back up the river. At least the ground work is laid for the new emergency spillway.
I'm sure the dam will be replaced.
Not only to lose their home and store, but the actual land it stood on too. Just terrible :( I wish them well on their next steps.
I'm amazed they let a big machine this close to all of that unstable land. I'd let things be a while more to see if it hold stable enough or not.

Hopefully the store will be rebuilt, I’m sure it won’t be the same. Perhaps it will be better in some ways.
This is so sad for that family😢
So they just demolished the old store rather then let the river have it?!
So you’d rather they let the debris cause more problems downstream? This made sense in your head?
Maybe the owners will get a chance to pick through the debris.
@@DevoteeCT Everything was removed before demolition.
@@DJFPhantomPhan The damn needs to be removed either way
Looks like the water is way down and perhaps has reached bedrock beneath the store. Now watch, that after they tore it down, the ground beneath it won't collapse. I feel sorry for that family. Hope they will be compensated and can rebuild.
A true shame for the owners. I hope they have some insurance coverage and that they rebuild at another location.

In Livingston, they are warning that dam may break, because the sheer amount of water that is flowing down the Trinity River, you cannot fight that power of water
1:50 Good to see they've started on a plan to help protect the bridge supports.
Exactly! They’re getting after it!
There's zero excuse for this... First off they could of cleared the debris with cranes and grapples... They could of done what other dam operators do and have debris nets upstream from the gates, They could of protected the bank with rip rap and stones when the dam first began overtopping... The officials sat there for 5 days watching.... They made no attempts to mitigate the situation... Sad Sad Sad...
@@chrisjohnson4666 You are clearly an non-thinking reactionary that has no idea what the power of a river like this is capable of doing. I guess the cost to tear it down was cheaper than moving it. I don't think the store was in immediate threat of falling into the river, however, the slope will need to be fixed as it will fail eventually on it's own and not due to more undercutting.
I don’t know that the decision was about cost. I’m guessing that they demolished it to avoid more large debris being washed downstream. It’s unlikely that it would have been safe enough to move it. That takes time and a lot more equipment. They can’t risk either of those things right now.
Oroville dam came one rainstorm away from doing that same thing except about 10,000 x as much water and washing down the Sacramento valley.
I'm surprised none of the news oulets have posted anything about the store being torn down yet.
Why did they bother tearing down the store? It was pretty far away from the erosion Bank, river was subsiding, and all appearances show that a new River Bank was forming meaning that the erosion in the direction of the store wise minimal risk at this point. What was the reason for tearing down the building? It doesn't appear that the river was going to reach it
They must be expecting more rain to take such drastic measures
Yes it’s expected to rain here I think tonight and again next week
Where did they move the store to. When I lived in Pennsylvania they gave a couple of beautiful old stone farm houses away if you could get them off of their foundation. Someone with a lot of acreage moved one about 5 miles away. I just saw last week another one being offered. It's so sad to lose so much property and the main house. I really hope they were able to save the store
Sadly, there was no way to move it. They demolished it.
WHY ? WHY THE H CRAP DID THEY TEAR THE STORE DOWN! HOW STUPID ARE THESE OFFICIALS! IF THEY WOULD HAVE BLOWN THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DAM TO RELEASE PRESSURE THE HOUSE AND STORE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED. CAN YOU SAY, STUPID? DID NOT WANT THE POSSIBLE EXTRA DEBIRS? OMG!
Totally agree with you,the city mess up this people house, land and store
The house & store fell in - good as long as the dam held - too close to the river…. Hope they rebuild farther away…
Just goes to show the river & nature is more powerful than man made objects!
Why wasn't the log jam cleared before this catastrophe? Seems like this was preventable.
I think the high water brought the trees down stream, the river banks up stream are to blame
The snow melt came down from the rockies into Nebraska in 2019… floods everywhere. Then to top it off the Missouri Dam Management - under edict to save the piping plover - released MORE water into the Missouri- broke an old Damn - one guy lived at the base of it, got swept away and they have never found him… people farming the river soil ended up with sand farms. Creating a state wide disaster - got DUA and then all was winding down and Covid pandemic hit…. Crazy crazy time …
The Spencer Dam on the Niobrara River got hit by a historic flood and ice flow. That double whammy destroyed that low-head hydroelectric dam. The Cornell Dam upstream is still in place. The Lake Minnechaduza Dam on Minnechaduza Creek has been modified for other purposes. The Long Pine Dam on Pine Creek went out in the early 1960s. The Northern Nebraska Power Company built the Spencer Dam. Wilber B. Foshay bought the others from their original owners, but it was the Interstate Power Company that modernized those dams in the late 1920s and early 1930s. There was another on Plum Creek northwest of Ainsworth.
What's going to happen to the dam in the upcoming weeks? Will it last for an while or it's going to get destroyed by flood?
Time will tell
We’re the govt and we’re here to help. No need destroy the store……….. sorry for the loss of history
Agreed the dam should have been blown in the beginning…BEFORE the water took out the bank and fence etc. Reports indicate that the dam had recently been assessed as being in seriously bad condition.
Does the family have the original blueprints of their home and store? It would be cool if they rebuilt them both to almost exacting specifications.
Was wondering if this was the channel they used when the dam was built to bypass construction
How come they didn't remove the power pole?
Lord give peace and health mercies for the wonderful memories folks who lived and worked and shopped at that little store,Amen.
I was actually hoping the store itself could have been saved, but I guess someone smarter than I deemed it to be too risky.😢
This is nature showing us where the spillway was supposed to be constructed.
Why would they tear it down rather than waiting to see if the erosion was even going to go that far? I feel for this family…hopefully their neighbors and friends step up to help them through all this.
THE REAL PROBLEM. was that the authorities didn’t clean the dam gates so that they would simply OPEN and allow the waters to flow
They were all open, but partially blocked by flood debris.
Water was made to roam freely, not held back! This is why we have disasters like this! When beavers build damns humans destroy them, why? Because they create flooding and erosion like this!
Thank you. 2:21 & 3:06 was what I wanted to see: How much were the logs blocking the flow? Answer: A lot. It probably looks different now than when more logs were floating, but significant blockage. Why did the operators let it build up like that? Surely they have procedures to monitor and remove logs.
There hasn't been any further erosion on that side they shouldn't have torn down the store!
So sad to watch a family lose everything in slow motion… I hope they can recoup because it’s not safe to rebuild and they lost all their land basically. 😢
It was mentioned that the store might be moved, yet here it is being demolished. What's behind that decision?

The water has such power to cut this in such a short time, although the high bank looks like layered Glacial till, one could only imagine the Missoula Flood water flow as millions of times greater
The dam overflowed because the spillways were blocked. the spillways were blocked because fallen trees and branches had not been removed from the river banks over a long period of time.
That's what I was thinking. What prevented them from keeping up with clearing the debris? Was the dam considered that unsafe that they didn't want to risk rolling out heavy equipment to pick up branches and depositing them on the downstream side? If the rising water was so severe that the open spillways couldn't prevent the breach on the side then so be it. But at least try!
4:14 CORRECT The damage was caused by the spillways being debris clogged, upstream water needed relief by the dam.
I have seen floating debris (utility poles, lp tanks, boats or portions, small structures, full grown trees) snag boats large and small from upstream Susquehanna marinas carrying all to give over the Safe Harbor Dam on their way to the Chesapeake Bay. Some debris starting in New York State over 200 miles away or heavy rains somewhere North of York County.
A heart break was a nice restored little 2 mask sailboat that an 80 foot floating tree snagged it anchor line. Rescue was tried with a 2 large motors work boat tieing off but all was carried away in the current. It towed with the owne, rCoast Guard officer and I watched the effort from the local boat ramp. They had to cut their line, the 5 pm TV news showed it going over the dam 4 miles away.
02:43 There is such a height disparity in the two water levels there, is it on a fault line?
Sad
This could have been much worse! The erosion still slowed the water while it was extremely high saving more property downstream! Now that its much lower its time to rebuild this dam or much more damage will occur!
