    I think it is a nice hutch. And you are teaching your daughter carpentry skills, too! For those concerned about sore hocks, you can line the bottom of cage with coastal hay. Rabbits will nibble on it, pee and poo will drop through, and when you clean out wet hay, you can toss it on top of droppings under hutch. Better yet, add some wheelbarrows underneath hutch and makes it easy to move to compost pile or add some worms.

    The long horizontal cross pieces on the top and bottom of the hutch are 2 X 4's - 8 feet in length. The four corner posts are 2 X 4's cut to 5 feet. The 2 X 4 small cross pieces on each end are 35 inches. The four divider panels are made from 2 X 2's and their finished dimensions are 36 inches in length and 24 inches high. The divider panels are spaced every 24 inches and are screwed down into 2 X 4 crosspieces that are 35 inches in length and vertically attached to the horizontal 2 X 4s.

    Nice job for sure for your climate. Here in central Canada some adjustments must be made, but that basic design is what i plan on doing but only having it for two pens so something insulated can be built at one end of each. I do prefer the use of smaller mesh on the floor to distribute weight better on feet of rabbits. Now 5 years later I am wondering if it held up. Thanks for uploading and sharing.

    Nice video and very nicely build hutch. I'm currently building one too but I'm not very good at joinery and for some reason the door frames are always higher in one corner even though the sides are both the same length, and if that isn't the problem there is another where if I put the frame on its side I can see one corner is sticking out to the side even though the wood is straight. You don't seem to have any of those problems there, it looks really great. Looking forward to the update video.

  • @amybrett95
    @amybrett95  Před 11 lety +1

    Thanks Dave. We did have some problems building each door. They just never seemed to lay flat or "hang straight". I also made the width of the doors too wide and didn't allow enough space for the hinges. (I have to admit...I was so worried about snakes getting in through any spaces so I made the doors to fit exactly instead of allowing for space for the hinges and clearance to open and close.

    The stalls in the video are 3 ft. deep by 2 ft. wide, by almost 30 inches tall, much, much larger than any rabbit hutches designed for meat rabbits. Our rabbits are very calm, happy, and well cared for. They are taken out and loved and exercised each day by my daughter. Sometimes I let them roam around my kitchen while I'm cooking dinner, but that tends to drive my husband crazy when he gets home from work and he finds a cute rabbit scampering about! Do you raise meat rabbits?

The reason I ask is because I don't see any comments from the PETA people who usually come to videos like these and trash people who raise rabbits. BTW I like your hutch. It looks like they have plenty of headroom. I plan to build some cages of my own. I want them big and roomy. I will also build a hide box for them to sleep in and be off the wires.

    To all those saying that wire flooring is a poor choice - solid flooring is very hard to keep clean. A rabbit that is walking around in its own droppings and urine is quickly going to be a very sick and probably dead rabbit. Unless you are committed to moving your rabbit at least every day (if it's on the ground) or cleaning solid flooring every day (and moving your rabbit until the hutch is clean and dry) you are probably going to go through lots and lots of rabbit tragedies. Resting pads on the wire solve the wire issue easily. Most domestic rabbits (unless they are very large breeds) are very happy in 30 X 30 X 18+ in. wire hutches. They are protected and safe and quite able to get lots of excercise.

    • @kendraobrien1753
      @kendraobrien1753 Před 6 lety +1

      They just need a spot to be able to get off the wire when they want. They have super sensitive feet so as long as there's a solid spot even if it's removable for cleaning

She hates the PVC piping we've used to build her tunnels around the room & won't even go into them. Would those be adequate to use? We are going to have a chloroplast floor as well.

      I would build a all wire hutch and hang it in a wooden frame like this. That is what I do for my rabbits and it workes very well. It is easy to clean prevents disease and my rabbits can get through the wire to chew on the wood.

    Did you use treated wood? Worried about chewing? I once built some cages using the type of flooring you used and bought from a hardware store. It does not hold up to rabbit urine. Instead, I found great success with 1/2 inch by 1 inch HEAVY guage flooring. Lasts a LONG time.

    • @amybrett95
      @amybrett95  Před 10 lety +1

      Hi Rachel,
      We purchased our materials from Home Depot. Ended up spending approximately $250.00 on everything, including the roof. It took me and my daughter approximately three weeks to complete it working on it for about 30 minutes to an hour each day. We didn't have an 8 hour day to be able to devote to it, so we consistently worked each day just a little bit at a time. Our second hutch we built was completed in a weekend.
