Really sucks how 1 person can cause mass chaos. I don’t want to think about people calling Police on us railfans because they think we’re going to “cause trouble”…when we just have cameras pointed at an oncoming train.
What happened with me is the main reason a whole bunch of drama in his discord server happened. People try to get to me no matter what I say or do, I also want to add that a lot of Railfans are the meanest people I’ve ever seen. It is way over the line of extreme to get 35 different people to hate someone over something they could not control. To the point where I ended up getting death threats no matter where I try to go railfanning. I completely agree with this video and it’s about time one like this was uploaded.
Coming from a UK train lovers prospective here on some of the issues you brought up here, tbh problems like that have always existed in the rail enthusiast scene, and it isn't just the US rail enthusiast scene that has these same issues. Similar problems with toxicity and drama exist in the UK rail enthusiast community too, but fortunately their not as bad as you describe in the US and most of us over here would be quick to call out those bad apples who have no business within the railway scene and handle them accordingly. Where as looking at the US rail enthusiast community it's seems to be a problem with self-centred people who mainly want clout for social media views and cause harm to others with zero accountability for their actions with the community and groups wishing to start fights with others over trivial rail and non-rail issues, and it's mainly the younger generations who mainly cause these problems for those who simply want to enjoy talking about and watching trains for the fun of it. I do believe however that some of these people who cause the US rail enthusiast community to be such a toxic place for you and others could be because those people have some sort of mental health issue or some other bad stuff going on in their life. Or they could also be people who are 'pretending' to be railfans just to be popular which causes them to such stupid things such as attempting to derail a train. But again I've never been to the US so I don't know how bad these issues are in the US rail enthusiast community. But I hope that people over in your country can come to their senses and while those issues will still be there, things will get better with time.
Derailing a train is just plain stupid same with standing right on the yellow line to get the train to honk more. Also, I as a railfan approve this video!
I grew up in a railfan household. I am a railfan. My dad has many many stories of railfans who did stupid, dangerous, illegal things. The difference is the internet. If someone derailed a train for a video in the 80s, local media would cover it and that would be the end of it. Today, it goes viral and it gets amplified. Every time a railfan does something stupid, we ALL hear about it within weeks.
I agree, it sucks. We need better railfans and not those who trespass, do not be like Capitol City Rail Productions. Just record the train, don't do something stupid for clout. For me, I just film trains. Some people in this community are stupid, or actually braindead when they do something intentional to get clout or views. I just hope one day we get better railfans, who simply records the trains and they don't do stupid crap like other railfans that shouldn't be considered railfans. Hope we have a great community in the future.
Protect this man at all costs, but seriously its us people with 0 patience that cause things as either its some person who isn't as knowledgeable or a person who is annoying that triggers us to go ballistic. We are allowed to have opinions and we are allowed to voice our opinions out, its just up to us how we limit those opinions and feelings for one another and how we can make the community better. If someone is less knowledgeable then yeah make fun of them in your head, but them teach them and give them knowledge so that they may pass it on to a less knowledgeable person down the road. And if someone does yell or talks during a clip just nicely ask them to be quiet for that moment in time. If they don't do so then you are more than welcome to move to a different spot or leave. I know I’m not one to talk but we all need to work on ourselves even though we say we are fine, we’re not and sometimes even the most popular and best people need to work on themselves. We need to be more accepting to others and not judge as much.
Whenever I do something not even that serious, I get somehow the worst treatment ever. But I wasn’t forgotten. But I wasn’t forgiven by people for just a slight thing I do, and some people even make edits of me so they think it’s funny. It’s not ok at all, last week was a nightmare. Even my close friends betrayed me for a very stupid reason. The Railfanning community is already a nightmare to deal with sometimes I swear.
From June 24th to July 15th I saw 14 people beat the train while the gates were closed on my SoCal trip we don’t get that shit down here in Utah I’ve only seen 5 people in Utah beat the train in 3 years
The railfan community has pretty much always been this way. I joined sometime in the early 2010’s, but have since moved on to focus on a career. The things everyone’s been hearing about now are no different 10 years ago. I have had folks that came and went and no longer speak to because of their toxicity or because we’ve moved on to different career paths and cities. I still do go out every now and then, just not often as before.
As a railfan I approve. I'm from South Carolina and while a lot of the problems aren't as bad here as elsewhere, we have our fair share of idiots, like earlier this year a car got hit by Amtrak near one of my railfan spots. And yes, a lot of railfans online are toxic af. I've gotten flak for missing heritage units while I was working (I'm a long haul trucker so railfanning is more luck than strategy a lot of the time). A lot of online railfans are kids so that contributes to it. I'm lucky that train crews in my hometown know me so I don't have issues, but I still worry when I'm away from home. I even get hate for defending GEVOs from the point of crew comfort vs ACes.
I’ve been filming trains now for 12 years. The main reason people are derailing trains, and other sorts of things in that nature, is solely for the views, which is really unfortunate. The only thing you can do as an individual, is to be a good example for other railfans! Keep doing what you’re doing, cheers.
to be honest about this railfan community according to dramas, stories, conversations, and recordings. let me get to the chase… it sucks really badly, not just by certain people. it’s just people lacking respect or empathy or anything else. people need to learn how they gotta treat others over any situation no matter what people do. *unless you done something really bad to the point that it is on your record* but beside the point. just don’t do anything stupid like trespassing too much, don’t stand too close to the tracks, and do not attempt to very r word things just to get views. alright that’s all I’m gonna say for that one. this is my personal opinion about this experience ❤
What’s worse about this is that now the public will see us casual not crazy formers as threats to society and will start to get so much hate that Railfanning might even start to be illegal due to some crappy and stupid people who just are crossing the lines while Railfanning.

As Autistic, I don’t really and mostly hyped up with trains at all anymore, with situation of a Guy from Nebraska, filming of a train collided a coal car, and now ends up gained National attention, including Railroads across the West Coast, the South, later the Midwest and mostly came to East Coast. Despite this, many people including the Railroads themselves are no longer trusting us, thinking that we were dangers to the safety. As for me, personally I don’t wanna become a RailFan Community, or basically a foamer. I don’t filming trains everywhere. I might be worried if the police or the Railroad workers closely might be involved. Even people who lived, thinking I would committing an act of terrorism, or suicide, or something which I never, ever interest with that, it’s because I am not mentally unstable as to some people who loved trains. That’s why I can asked the questions, do we, loved trains as a fetish, no offense literally, we may like trains, but we liked it too much, that I had to thought of this, think about this or realizing it could affected me. I don’t blamed who don’t understand about Railroads, or Trains, or our culture sometimes, but I don’t deserve to be judged. But why am I defending even I basically realizing it became a recipe of disaster, same thing that happened in East Palestine. This explains why everyone and sometimes people were afraid of trains, or even public shaming, condemn the CEOs of ignoring the rules and regulations, discriminate workers, conductors and engineer’s mental health, or the blocking trains that causes delays after delays that led major or fatal consequences, led to death if the emergency services can’t get to them on time, or injuries, or a waste of time. You can’t brush the situation as the whole world eye on them, media, internet, or even more complicated, politically. This is why you, as a *Railfan* is what’s the matter, I don’t say if this was your problem. But the problem is, the Community might dying. Not gotta lie. It won’t be lasted. You’d find out sooner or later. I may love or liking trains, but my faith and the interest is kinda dies down because I don’t wanna be involved in the community anymore. Just saying.

While im not trying to claim that Capitol City Rail Productions is innocent, im pretty sure that he's never been officially convicted with anything at the moment, so we can't say for certain if he did it or not. Sure, the circumstantial evidence is there, but without definitive proof, we shouldn't jump the gun just yet.
Ngl,... sounds just like the retail community. I think the retail community may not be quite so far down that rabbit hole so to speak, but, increasingly, it's the same crap just a different day and different community.
There's posts from 10+ years ago where people in the rail industry are openly hostile to rail fans.It's not a new thing at all though and it's a lot of the same issues just coming up over and over and over again though

Yeah I mean I don't even think some railfans will ever learn. Sorry for my lack of optimism. This isn't to offend anyone, but I feel like I've been put down a lot by younger railfans, and that's why I kinda stopped railfanning San Diego County.
If you have these feelings, how come you made a video on "The Dos And Don'ts Of Railfanning" yet you say people can enjoy trains however they want to? It seems like you're not a reliable source for information if you have two polarizing opinions.
