I had an Airedale for 10 years. He died at 10. I still cry when I think about him. He was so silly. I mean tbat in the nicest way. He made me laugh every day. He was so hard to train but that was ok because his personality was so wonderful. I used to chase him through the woods at the cottage. Soooo much fun. He was great with other dogs and all people. I miss him so much. One thing about Airedales is how incredibly strong they are. They are known to be used as the lead in a dog sled team because of their strength and extreme aloha attitude.

So, go get another one & continue to love another Airedale. I have owned them for over 30-years now. Each one has a bit of a different personality.

The hardest thing about having a dog is losing them. They are with us for too short a time. Gasser on the last comment was a little harsh. Go get another he wrote. Your not changing cars. Its akin to popping out and getting another mother or daughter. You never forget your dog. I feel your loss as I had mine taken away from me by my abusive female, partner. The law does not care. People can be evil. dogs are just your soul partner. I have to have a different breed of dog each time. The memories are too painful to compare one dog with another looking the same. My Humphrey is with me every week in my dreams. I feel I am also in his. One year has passed since your wrote your message. I hope that time has helped soften the loss.

Our 6 month Airedale is such a calm, peaceful, docile and obedient boy... then he wakes up!
Such beautiful training! I wish we could find a trainer local to us that understands how stubborn and yet tender hearted Airedales are. Positive reinforcement without physical correction seems to take too much patience for most trainers.

Absolutely true! I show them something new, maybe three times and we then do something they know to be praised. It is positive and they so badly won't give up and want to please but easily bored. My favorite breed for police work, multi species hunting/ retrieve and handicapp assistance as well as good family dogs. I learned with first one, don't bore them, they are quick to learn even if we think they didn't. My over 16 remembered where we pheasant hunted and we hadn't been in a few years and he was sound asleep. He knew! The joy and energy they have, a seem puppy like whole lives. The only thing any Airedale I trained didn't do that I asked them, was to live forever..

I have an Airedale, Hildy she is a sweet well mannered obedient little girl but she has a very independent side to her. She likes to sit by her self and look out at space (out side the fence) and when she can get out the its game on! She like to go and explore and when you find her the it becomes a game of catch me if you can.
I heard that in part this is part of the breed's genes, cause the were bread to work and hunt independent of people? I know they are very bright but was it difficult to get past that independent streak ?
