  • La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg is a complex dedicated to underwater and maritime exploration, located in the port city of Cherbourg, on the Normandy coast of France. La Cité de la Mer is located in the former transatlantic ferry terminal of Cherbourg, a historic building which welcomed millions of European emigrants heading to the Americas at the start of the 20th century. The site was transformed and opened as a museum and exhibition center in 2002. One of the main attractions of the Cité de la Mer is the nuclear ballistic missile submarine Le Redoutable, the world's largest submarine visitable in the world. Visitors can explore the interior of the submersible and learn about the life of sailors on board. The City of the Sea is also home to one of the deepest aquariums in Europe, allowing visitors to dive to discover the abyss to a depth of 11 meters. This aquarium features a variety of marine species, some living in extreme conditions. A permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of the Titanic, which stopped at Cherbourg during its maiden voyage. The exhibition traces the history of the famous liner and its passengers, with period objects and testimonies.
