  • What you need to know to set up at a typical market. It ain't all about product and pricing. The physical tents, displays, marketing, salesmanship, entertainment, and much much more will determine if you are a success.
Sorry about the focus in the video. I thought the camera tracked faces. 'Twas too late once I got into editing. The info is still OK though.

I've been looking at questionable booth setup videos for hours now and was starting to despair. But when I saw wortheffort, I felt immense peace and relief. And it was not misplaced because you broke down the booth setup basics even better than I was hoping you would. This is a fantastic video, thank you.

My late husband and I did the local and semi-local (never out of state) craft fairs for a few years. Our product was hand-crafted clocks, in various sizes. Our display was made from pegboard on frames that hinged together and could be put into a "Z" shape for stability. The clocks hung on peg hooks, displayed as they would be in a home, on "walls."
We had a rear curtain on our booth, and we used the space between the rear of the display and the curtain to stash the boxes during the sales hours. ;-)
Our tent anchors were 1-gallon buckets filled with concrete and eyebolts set in the middle: we tied the tent to the eyebolts with sturdy ropes, and it never moved at all.
On the down side, by then we were competing with plastic crap clocks from China, and often barely broke even on the booth fee. :-( And hubby was a great sales talent: he could sell the proverbial ice cubes to Eskimos, while I would have trouble selling tissues to someone with a nosebleed!
We transported and sold the clocks in the cardboard shipping boxes we bought to fit the various clocks. There were only about 3 sizes, and we had loading/unloading down to a science....but we never did run into a situation where we had to unload, leave our goods unattended while we parked our vehicle. We were always able to set up prior to moving the truck. (We didn't do farmer's markets.)

I came across this amazing video last night. I have been wanting to make something like this for my shows, but couldn't quite figure out what I wanted. This is perfect as i really love the flexibility of it. Can you share some of the specs for it? Type and size of wood, lengths of shelves, distance between rungs, etc? Would just love some sort of starting point for putting something like this together. I've never done any type of woodworking, so this will be a first and quite a long project because of that, so anything that helps me get started would be greatly appreciated. Love the setup and love all of the information you provide regarding what you do at events to draw customers, store items, etc. Thank you!

The ones that do just gloss over like there scared your going take there buisness if they help you be successful. We are a minority that should be helping others in our community succeed. thanks for be honest and helping all aspiring woodworkers make a little cash.

No one raking in the money on sales untill you build a client base.
What he's doing is hard work
Its building value into your work, but people will go out and spend 3k on a TV imported from Asia made in a factory
Thats going to break down after 5 years
When that bowl will last a lifetime at a fraction of the price.
Good solid bowls from local wood are hard to come by.

Thank you very much for your video. This was a great help. We took many of your ideas and used them at our first Art Fair. The idea for doing a demonstration was a hit! A VERY informative video. No one has to follow exactly what you do but adapt to their own markets. The information your provide makes the 1st show not so foreign. i make custom made pens and the Farmers Market is where I sell. Drawing in the customers with tutorials, examples of the woods/ resins I use and the old tried and true " Do you have an Apple tree in Grandma's back yard? I'll make you a pen out out it" works. It is your inter activeness that sells your work.. Great video and thank you for the insiders view.

  • @customizedtrainingservices2079

What a great video!!!!! I have been a trade and consumer show consultant and trainer for over 20 years. You are right on with your display and sales techniques. I cringe when I go to shows and watch vendors sitting behind a table in a back corner of their booth eating and / or sitting and blame everything and everybody but themselves for their poor sales. Shows are an interactive process. They are one of the most effective means to sell your present and future products.
There is so much great advice in this video I don't have time to comment on it all.

This is a great video! I wish I had seen this five years ago when we started doing shows. I had to learn all this out on my own, and I still hadn't figured out the trick with using the center pole to open the canopy. Thanks! The only thing I would add is to bring a small cooler with cold bottles of water for yourself, and for anyone who needs it. You have to stay hydrated in our Texas heat, and someone who is feeling the heat really appreciates the water, and a place to sit for a moment.

This is a great video! I have been selling at festivals and other places for over 30 years and you have condensed everything that anybody needs to know into this video. You explain it concisely and so anybody can understand it.
I watched the video and even though I've been doing this for as long as I have, I still picked up a few tips, such as using the wire to display wall hanging because it lets the wind blow through.
I always have been on the search for a perfect display system and everything had something wrong with it. Your shelf system is absolutely wonderful.
I'm starting to build cigar Box guitars and homemade instruments to sell at festivals and the The like this season. I am going to incorporate your ideas and build a display system.
You made it a good point to say that it is better to have people come into your booth and I have always subscribed to that philosophy. A lot of vendors at Scottish games put their Tables outside around the perimeter of their tent, you should see them scramble to get plastic to cover their merchandice when the rains came. We did not have that problem since we were set up with everything inside the tent. In added benefit was that when the rains did come and all the other vendors were covering up their stuff, our tent was full of people getting out of the rain, of course we made sales out of that .
We used to put up a 10 by 20' canvas pavilion because we did a lot of ren Fares And I wanted to be as authentic as possible. We put our pavilion up with wooden Poles and stakes . It even stood up to a hurricane that came through one of the Scottish games we were vending at, of course everyone ended up in our Tent!
This year I am going the e-z up route and I like the way you made weights to hold the tent down. Your way of attaching the weights to the legs with velcro is ingenious!
I'm looking forward to seeing your next video, and they hope that you a dress Selling at events In the future. I would like to know more about what our great Sellers and pricing.
Thank you for all the hard work that you do producing these videos, please keep it up!

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  Před 7 lety +8

Just one quick note on his numbers. He never took into account overhead. You still have to pay for rent, insurance, and utilities for your shop even if you're not there (working a market). Plus, you have to pay yourself at least minimum wage to work the market. The numbers he used didn't add up to me big picture. And you will be competing with many individuals (mainly retiree's) who don't worry about that kind of stuff. They're happy to get cost of goods back plus maybe a little for a new tool. It's actually really common and if a market has many of those types I work elsewhere. Numbers are a big thing you have to consider. This is not an easy way to make a living.

    • @fiveletters
      @fiveletters Před 7 lety +2

Oh absolutely! A big reason that David doesn't include those (I suspect), but they are absolutely paramount concerns for other folks, is that his shop is in his home, so the overhead for rent and fixed costs is commingled with what he would be paying anyway.
Of course his utilities are surely affected, but of course that's an infinitesimally smaller cost compared to what a separate space would set you back. His main income is really from making videos, so selling pieces, plans, and books is a smaller part of the business. Sort of the exact inverse of what I imagine your situation is. Which is another reason I really appreciate you sharing all of this with the wider world!
Anyone considering taking this up as a profession would do well to heed your advice.

Very helpful video for the season coming up. I really like your display setup. Nice idea about demonstrating. Do you have to be concerned about insurance annnd do you use a plexiglass screen in front of the lathe?

DEFINITELY worth the effort, this time. Now that it's summer time I'm going to start building my displays based on your examples. I've got to find a mini lathe to use. I'm not going to haul my midi with me.
Thanks for a great video. Jim

Check out the trestle lathe stand build for your mine. The metal ones don't last and I get good comments about it when I'm out. Dad had a Delta Midi for a while we used. They're a little heavier but work. He sold it and bought one like mine.

I forgot to add this in my last post, but your advice about a uniform is dead on. The Scottish garb that I am wearing in my picture is what I used to wear at the festivals, it didn't hurt that I liked wearing it anyway. Every one that was in the booth were some type of historic medieval or Renaissance clothing. I make the distinction and say clothing because that is what it was it was not a costume.

Awesome, I think what you do for newcomers and even oldies to the markets is brilliant, woodturning, incredible artists you and your dad , a quick word of advice from the uk widn s! on the eyes of your weights which are a great idea . I would run a strap up to the frame to hold it down more. Again made to measure to save time, but with dual height capability.... love also spare clothes for after setup as your hot and sweaty and a uniform like an company apron for demos , just to stand out, we do all the tricks over here like you... well done, its a hard life to make a buck.... I moved to Spain to retire and we have nothing like this here, no yard sales no car boot sales, not secondhand markets or makers market nothing like this at all. People here sadly do not have hobbies , they grown old, sit in the sun have a cigar and red wine and talk the day away instead, but down in my workshop i have 2 lasers and larege lead screw CNC , a jewellers table and a big C02 laser for cutting small stuff and after watching a lot of your videos and I just have room for a small lathe and I have bought one to make small things on as I have been talking to my spanish Mayoress who understands foreigners and she has said yes to a market on a regular basis.....At last someone who thinks in a forward way here!

Sitges Villa Apartment I’ve found anchoring via straps to top of frame creates more movement. Strapped to legs (no way to slip off) and the canopy doesn’t sway so much. Don’t understand physics but real world....

@@wortheffort sorry i meant to anchor them round the legs and on the top . double safety that way...... 😄
