  • Opinionated DS9 Episode Guide continues it's looking at the start of the Dominion War. The Dominion controls DS9 and to make things worse, Sisko also has to trade in his baby for a Jem'hadar ship. They need to destroy a secret base and get back home intact... well, they manage half of that, anyway...

Wait. A time to stand. An episode where they’re on a ship with no chairs.
I’m only now noticing this. It was on purpose, please tell me it was.

The occupied DS9 arc was great. It's so rare to see things from the villain's perspective in Trek. It's so interesting to see the Dominion's scheming and the tension between the Cardassians and Dominion. I wanted it to be even longer, not the whole season but 10 or 12 episodes.
As for Jake, the writers were never sure what to do with the character. While I think having him stay on DS9 ended up being a good decision, I think they either should have taken more time to set him up as a journalist or created some other reason for why he was left behind.

Chuckled at how they needed to show how that mighty damn awesome huge fleet of Federation and Klingons from the end of Call to Arms got its ass massively handed to them at the beginning of A Time to Stand because of a miscommunication and the effects team being too good at their jobs.

@@bthsr7113 Mh, ça dépend. Generally speaking, theocracies have far stricter rules and harsher and more atrocious enforcement than secular regimes, because that's what you get when your law is divine and unnegotiable. Politically, they generally tend to be more atrocious, not least simply because political life and a claim to absolute authority don't mix well. On the other hand, an oligarchy legitimizing itself purely via religion (i. e. a theocracy) is also often less economically exploitative than a more secular oligarchy, because if your power and legitimacy relies solely on religion, it also needs an at least somewhat functioning social life on a local and communal level to even function at all, and thus can't easily bleed its citizens dry economically without losing the foundation of its own power - although I'm sure the Founders will have no such scruples. (The Dominion doesn't even have a proper religion, just a really weird, abstract notion of the Founders' Godhood.)

Jake's decision to remain makes sense in character and his belief that the Dominion would not harm the Son of a religious figure of pseudo-friend they kind of need is mostly logical .But none of that is important .What is important is that the writers needed Jake to stay in the show and he could not do that if he left .He would have been sent to Earth .

I guess it makes sense they didn't install a replicator or other Federation tech on the Jem'Hadar ship. We don't know how efficient Dominion scanning technology is. You wouldn't want to risk getting caught when they pick up a Starfleet power signature on board.
Just how they're gonna hide the fact the ship is operated by humans, a Cardassian and a Ferengi? Well... *sigh*. Got me there. Just as it's a major leap in logic that Garak assumed Cardassian physiology was better equipped to handle the Dominion VR headset just because they saw Gul Dukat wear it during the attack on the station. Who knows how long he wore it or how bad his head hurt? Still, it was a nice way to give Garak something to do.

In DS9, especially in the Dominion War story, a lot of time was spent with the antagonists. I wonder where it would rank in that category among all the shows and movies. Wrath, Nemesis, then DS9? Statistically, someone has to have put in the work to calculate this.

That story about the miscommunication with the fleet reminds me of what WoW did with Garrosh in Stonetalon Mountain being at odds with the direction they planned to take him. It gave me such high hopes he'd be a good Warchief, only for the only bad part of Pandaria to shatter those hopes and stomp them into the ground.

Garrosh went from "My dad was the worst ever!" when we first meet him straight to "Grom did nothing wrong!" somehow missing the major point that while Grom died a hero he nearly damned his people first... and that the core lesson Grom learned to become a hero was that some power comes at too high a price.
