i didn't expect such a high quality video about rain harvesting, going through all the small yet important details makes me feel secure about how to make one of these for myself, so im thankful and very impressed, by the way try using a long hose to siphon the water from the top of the barrel for faster discharge it'll be useful as the barrel itself doesn't have to be too high above ground and the lower youput the end of that hose compared to tank the faster it'll drain it's interesting specially in flat land
Not meaning to say this great guy did wrong, Im just adding to his awesome video, for my top, I got a sieve and did about the same onbly made a rubber ring the sieve sits on to prevent sliding around. I have a barrel inside my off grid cabin also, i bought entirely food grade and they had actual food transported in them. Vineagar. That is the perfect barrel to use, because the vinegar inside before you get the barrel kept it mold free. The barrel i used inside after i filter my water with a three stage reverse osmosis system, exactly like you see in an RV. I live off grid so my water collection had to be for inside sanitary besides for my garden. So my inside barrel i didnt put a valve anywhere on it. I run a hose into the barrel from the top that a RV on demand pump that feeds to my faucets and shower. on the top, i cut out a hole large enough that I can put my arm into , to wash out the barrel a few times. it will grow alge over time, i put a drop of bleach or a very small tad of pool chlorine to help prevent alge. I gotten a piece of thin rubber to make a flap, a rubber door mat i bought at walmart for 5 bucks to be exact, probably not the best idea for sanitary reason, but i only use the water supply inside for washing, showering, dishes. Just washed the new rubber mat very well, i cut a large enough piece to cover the opening for my arm, i used stainless steel screws and washers to hold the flap, this way from my rain barrels , i pump water through the three stadge filter into the inside barrel. Since i did not put a valve in the inside barrel, im rest asured the tank will never leak. For my drinking water, i have a berkley system that is three gallons, so i take off three gallons from the inside barrel . I live off grid with no water sources near i care to drink, a creek but cattle do their business in it so i refuse to use that for my garden, my washing or drinking. Some states its illegal to do this rain catchment. But yes, before consuming, am adamant about filtering it extremely well to even shower with.
This is a GREAT video and so is the diverter video! Thanks for these! I want to harvest some rainwater for my plants/small garden. Tap water seems to make everything sterile. But I've also got a drainage problem in that my yard holds too much water. I can't afford the real deal fix right now. But I COULD AFFORD to put up a few barrels at strategic downspout locations and add hoses to run that extra water down to the street where it can go to the gutter instead of making my yard a swamp. Any suggestions about where/how to modify?
Cut the whole top out and make a window screen cover for the whole top . I make manure tea in my rain barrels for fertilizer .along with some epsom salts .

Icut it a little larger and sew a pocket around it like a hoodie and put a string through that and put it over the top of the barrel and pull the string tight . Iyt still lets rain in but not bugs and keeps leaves and stuff out . I thank my dad for that idea back when we owned a farm growing up and collected rain water t make manure tea to fertilize our gardewns . It was just a 7 acre city farm that was grandfathered in when my parents bought it when Iwas 9 and the was back in the 60's . Expect he just tied the string around the rain barrels and it was always hard to get off
Heat the plastic with a hairdryer or heating gun ( not sure of the name) to heat the plastic. This will make the plastic just soft enough to cut just a little bit easier. I do this cutting holes into storage bins. Works great. Seems like it would work too yeah?
The only way I know is to ask the seller or to see what was delivered in the barrel. They can be used to transport anything from corn syrup to pesticides. The seller will usually know, and should be able to tell you what it held. If they don't know, you should be cautious.
When you say "the right holesaw for your threads", when you are referring to matching up drill bit to tap, time stamp- approx 3.25 mins in, what do you mean/how would you do please?
I wonder if you could do something similar, but turn the barrel upside down so that you can cut a 12” hole for a bigger screen. Seems like the bung plugs should be water tight. I need a larger inlet to capture water from my rain chain, so this might be the solution. Whaddya think?
I make all of mine by turning the barrels upside down. The bung plugs have threads in them for 3/4 pipe. I plumb mine out using pvc pipe and have no problem with the valve plugging up.
Please. Do not use a 1' hole saw bit, use a 7/8 instead and lightly file out the hole, 3/4 threaded spigot vary in threading depth. Then thread your brass valve into the barrel several times to work in the thread tap you made. This makes that threading much deeper to hold the spigot more securely.

I have some barrels with no top. That can be handy, but it's also harder to keep mosquitoes and leaves out of the barrel.

Couldn’t you have turned the barrel upside down and use the factory threaded plug for the clean out drain?
Was that big plastic plug made out of food grade plastic?

Is 5 inches from the bottom a common thing to do? I would have put them at the very bottom had I not watched this video.
