  • On December 4, 2023, CSX ran the first mainline road freight to Mattawamkeag in 4 years and 8 months, officially reopening the interchange with Eastern Maine Railway. After a derailment in 2019, Pan Am closed the line between Hermon and Mattawamkeag to road freights, instead routing traffic via the CMQ/CP Bangor Subdivision. However, with interest in the more direct route coupled with the pressure of CP to get rid of this shorthaul traffic off their own line, CSX has done major improvements to the Keag line, basically rebuilding it from the ground up.
On this day, Waterville-based local L071 operated this train out of Waterville yard in the morning, arriving at Northern Maine Junction around midday, before picking up another power set in the yard and heading back toward Waterville. Northern Maine Junction based crew L072 went on duty in the mid-afternoon and picked up the train, leaving Hermon eastbound just after dark with 7620 and 7552 with 47 cars in tow. Here they are rolling along the Bangor waterfront, in one of the few areas on the mainline that has not been upgraded to 25. Aside from the Bangor and Old Town yards, everything else is effectively 25 mph. I hope you enjoy the first CSX road freight east of Hermon!

I definitely wouldn’t mind living next to the track! Much better than living next to another hiking biking trail!

Fantastic to see this. CSX buying Pan Am was the best thing to happen to New England railroading in my lifetime.

Now that’s quite a stretch. They are just Pan Am but with better track conditions. They are already bullying a lot of customers trying to drive them away. They already managed to kill off the lumber reload at Enfield that Pan Am opened.

I wouldn't go that far. The only places CSX doesn't drive away carload customers is the south. Take a look at how they have mismanaged rail operations in Mass over the past 10 or so years and thats a good picture at how New England is going to be run until they sell it.

I'm always glad to see rail lines being upgraded and used again. Not sure the people living in the appartment block with the Christmas decorations will agree !

This is quite significant and very exciting to see! CSX might not be the perfect savior for Pan Am but they’re doing some things right, and this is one of them.

Now all CSXT has to do is get rid of these pieces of shit left over from pan am

Ironically these still run better than the junk CSX keeps sending up. That CSX GP38-2 they keep sending back up here should be dropped into the Atlantic as a new coral reef. Thing is a pile, it will be pulling and then will shut down on its own. Either that or it is slippery as hell with even a small train.

@@MillersRailfan until last month, yes. I jumped from the sinking ship that is CSX. Even the AC’s they are sending out here are trash. They have so many traction motors cut out that the dynamics don’t work. That combined with working conditions which are 500 times worse than pan am, and overbearing managers, no wonder why 75% of the former pan am guys have left.

@@quinnwhite2648Employees have left (and have not hired on) for two main reasons:
1 - They are still operating under the absolutely horrible BLE and UTU ST rate structure and labor agreements. Who would work for 75% starting of already low rates compared to other railroads? That will go away soon now that B&E has taken over PAS.
2 - The Country Club is shutdown. No longer can you go over to Channel 2 and disappear for 4 hours or drag your balls at 18 MPH the entire trip. ST employees hate management and they hate oversight. Another railroad's local crew can switch a 10 car train in 1/4 the time it takes an ST crew to do it. They don't care whether they get to their destination on rubber tires or on their train. They don't realize that sticking it to the man hurts the customers who pay your pay check. It sucks having to do your job now.
Working conditions? What a joke... at least they are making at attempt at making their employees feel human. Going to work in some of those "job site trailers" with overflowing toilets, no heat, debris all over the roadbed, rotting oatmeal on the ground, broken lights is an experience I don't wish on anyone. Pan Am was an absolute disgrace.

Taxpayer money is used for railroads across the country.... your point?
Constantly writing op-eds to the Caledonian Record isn't going to change that...
