#retrocommercialsââââââ #80scommercialsââââââ #1980sâ - ZĂĄbava
1950âs nostalgia was going HARD in â88. Kind of makes sense. Typically nostalgia runs about 25-30 years behind, and nowadays, 90âs styles are coming back.
The 80's when $80 a month got you a car. Now I need more than that just for Groceries, for a WEEK!
I had that 80s Ford Tempo. Was not worth $80 a month.... and there was a good chance it would not even get you to the grocery store... đ lol!!
@@eventstephen I had an 80's Mercury Lynx that was worse than that!
Inflation is the hidden tax
In 1988 you could go to a dealership and buy a new car for under $5,000âŠ. Unfortunately, it only had air, heat and a radio with low end sound system!! Ahh, I miss those days!!
LGB!!
TIL Garfield was an incredible crash test dummy.
Tracey Ullman! I used to watch her all the time.
These were great, thanks for sharing them! I loved seeing Joe Isuzu!
loved that joe Isuzu campaign!
@@poetrich Me too. David Leisure is a talented actor. Miss seeing him do stuff.
Interesting how during the mid 80s to early 90s many commercials, TV shows and movies featured natural lighting and made heavy use of shadows. That aesthetic always comes to mind when I think of that era.
same
Interesting observation. Analog cameras gave that "feathered edges" softness to the films.
I certainly do miss the year 1988.
I played a ton of NES and collected a bunch of wax-pack era baseball cards
YES!! Much simpler times for sureâŠ
Ummm, I was 18 at the time, and I got to say, I'm glad those days are gone, forever...
@@larry8253 show us on the doll where 1988 touched you.
@@larry8253 Damn why? ...You are definitely in the minority
I turned 7 in 88, and man the 80's sure loved their anti-drug PSA's.
They were anti black PSAs. It was pure fucking racism to fill prisons.
Reagan started the War on Drugs. the First Lady, Nancy Reagan, had a Just Say No campaign. the result was lots of PSAs to get all those meddling kids off drugs. did it work? well, weed is legal now in several states including my home state of CA. even psychedelics are now being touted for having great medicinal benefits. but what we did get out of the bargain was some very earnest but wacky anti-drug PSAs.
@@poetrich And the drug war.đ
I was 13 in 88. Yes they really pushed it on us in school. JUST SAY NO buttons and guest speakers about drug peer pressure. It was big thing back then.
@@poetrich I feel it did as much good as it did bad, and a lot of those PSA's are still etched in my brain even all these years later(This is your brain on drugs with the fried egg in the cast iron pan, and I learned it by watching you!! ones comes to mind)đ
Just what I needed to unwind, a little of Dave's Archives
19:33 choose your own adventure on what you think she says
Lol đ how did this get passed in the 80âs!!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane '88 Dave đ
Thank you for finally including local commercials from the Bay Area! As a Bay Area native, I definitely recognized a lot of these commercials from my youth (Tri-City Sporting Goods, Circuit City, Emporium Campbell) among others. This was an extremely nostalgic video for me!
John Davidson doing The Music Man thatâs incredible!
huzzah!
Ha ha I See What U Did There!! Good Oneđđđ
You knocked it out of the park with these commercials Dave!!!!
Loved the ads Dave! My husband and I were talking as we were watching this. The PSA on anti-drug war was strong then. He remembers his school brought in a local K9 and planted a bag of marijuana in the gym somewhere to show how easy it is to find it. Buttons at my school were handed out with JUST SAY NO printed on them. Also we were talking the ads of today are mostly electric cars and pharmaceutical ads which identifies the mental health crisis of today. Also the grocery food ads (a.k.a the Duncan Hines cake ad for example) aren't around much unless it's a really big name. It's mainly electric cars and pharmacy meds. A few McDonald's and fast food. That's about it. This collection brought back some memories. See ya tomorrow night!
They'll forever be the #2 soda, but you gotta give Pepsi credit for their aggressive marketing in the 80s vs. Coca-Cola
I grew up half way in the 80s it takes me back when I was 4 years old back in 1988
i remember 1988 very well! sure the world has changed, notice the dude writing with a typewriter in the Duncan Hines commercial? but our media landscape is still saturated with car, food, & perfume ads! what changes stays the same! oh, i also had a typewriter in 1988! thanks for the memories, Dave!
That was the most extreme jingle I've ever heard for water.
My sister was 8 years old in 1988, I was -2 LOL
Thanks again for the retro goodness!
"I wish I'd never seen cocaine", *chef's kiss*
Schick can help you with your cocaine cravings, Zach!
1988 was a very great year! These commercials reflect thatâŠ.
Your intro is the best... Close my eyes and it's like 1989. I paid 75.00 for my first car a 1972 Ford Maverick
My favorite ad was for the Westinghouse Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range.
That contour chair looks comfortable.
!988!! sweet spot of the late 80s
The Gr8 1988!đŒđ„
It's very interesting seeing ads from a decade I wasn't born in everything seems so wholesomeđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđ
HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Emporium Campbell-loved those ads like this one which used downtown L.A as a backdrop
So the Home Club commercial said it did it's survey on "July 13", and this video was uploaded on July 13. As I sit here at home on my bday of July 13. That's rad!
Its time its Dave's archive time
9:11 - 10:08 It must've have been the music, but just *knew* that was going to be a anti-drug ad. "When you don't say 'no' to your kids about drugs, it's the same as saying 'yes'", isn't supposed to be funny, but it's damn hilarious.
They went unnecessarily hard on commercial jingles in the 80s and I respect it.
12:24 Bro, that's a parrot not a goddamn red-tailed hawk.
18:18 - 18:32 As soon as I saw the innocent little kid's drawing I knew it was going to be something bad, but, Jesus, that got dark.
22:49 - 23:13 Yet another unintentionally hilarious anti-drug PSA. That's the funniest shit I've seen all day.
Wow Tri-City Sporting goods, they had the best selection of snowboards. Classic â€ïž
18:14 - First time ever seeing this PSA before and it's certainly one of the more effective one's I've seen yet.
Yeah. That one was ahead of its time. Not much of a focus on mental health and psychological abuse in the 80's. Most PSA's back then were more like that anti drug PSA from earlier in the vid. Over the top, ham fisted and cringe. By today's standards.
@@youngimperialistmkii this your Brain đ§ on drugs đ„đł lol
Was that George Costanza in the Coke Pepsi commercial đ€
Always good, love the intro on the videos too!
@Peg Brown me too Peg Brown!
Thanks, Peg!~
Great upload Dave ! Awesome they aired To Live And Die in LA on tv ! Cheers Dave đ»
Thanks, OIA! Yeah, was a fun set of ads. See ya on the next live stream!
Who was the actor in the Isuzu commercial? His voice was in so many things from the 1980s and 90âs.
The actor who played Joe Isuzu was David Leisure.
@James I completely forgot about that show, as I don't remember watching it all that much as a kid, but you are completely right, David Leisure was the slimy neighbor.
Thanks again, Dave.
Here I thought seeing those drunk driving ads with the state trooper visiting the parent's residence and telling them the bad news that their son/daughter getting killed in a drunk driving related accident got me.
I was 12 and living in Fairfield, CA (Travis AFB) when these aired on KTVU. I probably watched a lot of these live.
Just what the world was waiting for, a John Davidson musicalâŠ
Jason Alexander sighting in the 1st Pepsi commercial
0:38 Cool jazz and atmospheric lighting is the ideal way to sell chicken fajita pitas. đ
3:26 Alex Rocco and his Boston accent.
Love these videos buddy, takes me back to a simpler time
Thanks for another trip back đđŻđŒđŒđŒđșđ§đ§đ§ Dave
I was 11
9:13 no matter how much I've seen this very PSA on a lot of Anti-Drugs PSA compilations it still freaks me out and the other PSA 18:15.
Did anyone also freaked out at the face at the end of "the bedroom" ad...ugh
12 min mark. I donât ever remember the coach taking us to get water, wth? Dairy Queen!
24:30 "Old age is not for sissies" đđđ. Art didn't have to go that hard with a title like that đ. Also you can see the 90s slowly creeping into these ads. Times were changing and the 80s was shifting. I was 5 about this time
I love chicken fajitas bobeatas with señorita tortilla sauce

99 cents for a burger, in 1988? It's like $20 now.
I could really use a Contour Chair right about now, I"m past the age requirement, quite a bit past
2:04 Best Commercial FTW... :)
Shampoo and Conditioner we're a thing in the 80'sđ
David Leisure, Joe Isuzu. Loved him on Empty Nest and so many other shows. Always playing the same character. 2:15
That upstart cola sure needed to advertise a lot.
Is that the same orca that dragged a trainer to the bottom of the pool and held her there until the trainer was dead? Don't play with your food! 12:12 So long and thanks for all the fish.
Was he the guy who appeared in 10 things i hate about you, for detention?
One of those Crash Test Dummies must have been voiced by Lorenzo Music. He sounds just like the original Garfield.
The Foldgers ad didn't age well. xD
Still 30 frames 5 times in a row.
I miss my Isuzu truck.
man the 80s loved pepsi
Was the flavor strawberry and banana created in 1988? Seems like every product came out with something.
22:54 I wish I'd never seen a cocaine, now I have to walk to Pak-n-Save
way cool
Who's the guy in the Isuzu commercial? I know I've seen him elsewhere but can't place him

Dave's Archives is the best...*ding*
See, you can trust me....đ”
đ
Musicals are horrible on the face of it..but John Davidson in one???a colossal joke....
I wish I could have raised my kids in the 80s rather than now. I was born in the wrong generation for sure đ
sad commercials arent memorable now
Dave, thanks for all the late 80s Molly McButter retro goodness đ§đ§đ§đ§
1:41 THE TRACEY ULLMAN SHOW promo. THE SIMPSONS started as short animated segments on her show in 1987. KTHU was one of the original FOX O & O stations and still is.
2:05. David Leisure for Isuzu as Joe Isuzu . He was a regular on NBCs EMPTY NEST ( 1988-95) which starred Richard Mulligan ( SOAP) & Kristy McNichol ( FAMILY).
3:05 Character actor /voiceover artist Alex Rocco known for his role as a casino owner in the original THE GODFATHER, also recurring as Nancy McKeon's ( Jo) father on THE FACTS OF LIFE and later recurring as the voice of Roger Myers Jr the head of Scratchy Studios on THE SIMPSONS is the grifter gentleman in the Wendy's ad.
5:07 Jack Burns ( original partner of George Carlin) later replacing Don Knotts on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW also voiceover artist/ writer/ director. And Lorenzo Music known as the voice of Carlton the doorman on RHODA ( which he wrote for) and the original voice of GARFIELD. As the voices of the crash test dummies ( Vince & Larry) in the long running safety belt PSAs.
5:38 Christie Brinkley for Prell shampoo and conditioner.
6:08 Mike Tyson for Diet Pepsi
24:20 Art Linkletter for the contour chair.
All great info! But wasn't Jack Burns' partner Avery Schreiber? Chubby, curly hair, epic stache? I remember them from Sullivan. They had some rapid-fire bits. I don't recall Burns working with Carlin.
@@AnniePA1960 Thanks.. I do remember when Jack & Avery Shreiber worked together. I learned a few months back that they were partners when Judd Apatow was talking about his George Carlin documentary for HBO. They were partners for a few years in the late 50s- early 60s.
@@RusstheTroubadour very cool! Thanks!
