Could you do a video on your changing tastes and why you wear the boots you do now and what companies/styles are your favorite now. Definately include your current views on Red Wings too please. Love all your videos!
@@CJCook i agree with john; definitely want to see that. I cant for the life of me figure out why you have turned your back to the moc toes
Totally agree! That new sole is way more suitable.
Coincidentally, I tried on these boots a couple days ago, wishing they could be mixed with the Roughneck. I've been looking for Ice Cutters and they are harder to find than leprechauns. I agree that the Sawmill/Ice Cutter sole would have been perfect, but I still think I'm getting these tomorrow because the GoreTex is nice and the red is lovely... I can always switch to the lugs when I resole! Those are PERFECT!!!
Appreciate another great review from CJ, the Heritage Czar. Visually, agree the Vibram Lug TC-4 Plus sole looks fantastic. I have the 8864, curious if they were able to retain the padded insole (under Goretex lining) when these were resoled? Wasn't the "limited edition" a traction tred cushion crepe sole? For standing/walking on concrete all day, 8864 is exceptional. Used RW burgundy polish & polished over the white stitching, turned out beautifully yet still distinct from Oxblood Mesa. Looks sharp w/ the RW waxed black laces.
I live in seattle and ride motorcycles. This boot makes perfect sense! It’s not a damn hiking or snow boot. I’m sure many other tradesmen in this area would appreciate this boot as well.
I have a motorcycle as well. I would wear the 1178 over this boot. I don't like to wear laces whilst riding. The laces can be troublesome whilst shifting.
I agreed with you, until I used these planting on the farm. the traction trend was great for not picking up the mud from the fields. The gore Tex kept my feet dry. Good farm boots
I have both pairs featured in size 11. Oddly, the 8864s do fit a little smaller than the 8890s, yet they are half an inch longer in length. I think it is a good point about why Red Wing did not put a more rugged sole on the 8864s. They would have been more appealing to the outdoors type people, and I will definitely consider that option if or when mine need to be resoled. I only wear mine in town, so the traction soles are fine for now.
Good to know the sizing of the Red Wing 8864s need extra attention...It wasn't my imagination.
A Goretex lining doesn't make this a winter boot. Waterproof yes, but without insulation of some sort this is hardly a "winter boot".
I have a pair of these and they're fine for back and forth from the car or a short walk around the block with some decent wool socks, they're not go out and shovel the driveway after a blizzard or climb the Alps boots and I think were never intended as such.
Also, winter isn't the only time things get wet. Perhaps you're familiar with Spring? Late Fall? Hell I think it even rains on occasion in the summer. 😁
To be fair, they aren’t advertised as winter boots. They’re intended for wet weather Definitely a Spring and Fall boot but something with insulation (and waterproof) would be needed for winters in many places.
100% agree, why the TT white sole? With the ice cutter Vibram's, are they essentially Roughneck's with Gortex? They are in my favorite leather tho, the Oro Russet Portage, love 'em! Great review :)
@@CJCook very cool. Will have to keep my eyes out for these, especially for in Wisconsin right now 😅
No more free Red Wings for you CJ 🤪😂 They failed to consult the Red Wing king before producing these😎Yeah I’m a 9D in all Red Wings, and I felt better in a 9.5D. It seems they didn’t take in to account adding the Goretex booty 🙄
I love this red color of the boot but gore Tex really limits when i could wear these. I have sweaty feet and 90% of the time unless it's raining heavily, these don't breathe well enough to be worth it
This, and putting the traction tread on the Iron Rangers...Ha
Well, they used a cheap wedge sole and charged a butt load of money for these. I'm pretty sure, they weren't really thinking of the functionality behind it all. Additionally, I believe using the Vibram Lug sole or if I'm not mistaken its true name is the Vibram Carrarmato sole, would actually require a shank to be installed. They were going for $$ over functionality here.
I agree, it was an odd design choice by red wing to not use the ice cutter sole on the gore tex moc... but i think the reason for that is that I dont think the goretex moc is truly suppose to be a winterized boot offering from redwing, despite many considering it as such since if you actually think about it the sawmill obviously still holds that top spot and was vary clearly designed better for winter weather in mind with features like the wool insole, padded collar, ice cutter sole etc
The goretex moc on the other hand is literally just the classic moc with improved water resistance thanks to the addition of the goretex membrane.
and if we consider the fact that the irish setter moc toe boot was originally marketed as a all purpose sportsman/hunters type of boot, then the goretex moc is arguably the ultimate moc toe boot in that general outdoorsman boot category, rather then the more specialized winterized class of boots.
All that said, i wonder why not just make a goretex iron ranger boot designed for winter with the ice cutter sole and other features and then costumers wouldve had there choice between 2 boots vary clearly designed around winter elements... the sawmill moc or a goretex iron ranger.
but the way redwing did it it makes little logical sense to me as a Canadian customer... now their line up has 2 "all season" mocs, in which one essentially has better water resistance but worse traction and then the other has better traction but worse water resistance.
Again, I think it makes most sense if you look at things from the perspective of the goretex moc being more or less just a classic 3 seasons outdoorsman moc boot... that with some upgrades could be a good winter boot too, whereas the sawmill is the more truly dedicated winterized moc boot among redwings line up.
I agree with both of you. There is still a need for the Ice Cutter AND the Sawmill.
Are they missing pull up straps
Agree 100%. Looks like RW stuck to their guns trying to deliver a heritage Moc look forgoing functionality.
Great boot otherwise, just too bad no EE
This sole is the ONLY option on a Gore-Tex boot. No brainer!
great videos thanks i have red wing 9268 steel toe made in usa do you know what they are worth excellent condition
my feet have never been more sweaty than in gortex. maybe I should have changed my socks a few times per shift.
The boot is supposed to be a recreation of the original Irish setter that’s why it comes with the moctoe.
Nothing wrong with the moc toe. It is the cushion crepe sole that makes the boot useless in the snow and ice.
Thanks CJ you given me an idea of replacing the soles on my 1907 with white ice cutter soles what do you think???? 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
The leather on the outside of the heel counter is different. There is one piece of leather. It is not stitched on.
Where did your friend get his boots resoled with the Ice Cutter soles? I want to do the same thing to mine.
@@michaeltesterman2109 A local cobbler. Most local cobblers can add this sole because it is quite generic.
Hi CJ, if you already had the Blacksmiths but wanted a second and 3rd pair of RWs which would you go for? Great viewing mate!
@@CJCook oh okay, are you not wearing mock toes anymore?I just think Iron rangers are so similar to my Blacksmiths 😂
Why don’t you wear moc toes anymore, i’m just very curious. Another great video btw.👍🏾
The Moc Toes' silhouette is too bulky for how I am interested in dressing these days.
Finally a Red Wing Moc video, sorry not a cowboy boot guy. I thought you sold all your Red Wings and moved to Wyoming.
Hey are you going to sell those 8890’s? Interested if they’re a size 8-8.5
Correct me if I’m wrong but with the new soles they look exactly like the roughneck but only with Gore-Tex. You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference
Why is CJ not wearing Moctoe anymore? I just purchased these Gor-Tex Moctoe's for winter season.
@@CJCookI'll trade you my iron ranger wedge. For your rough and tough Moctoe. That was meant to be said with a laugh. My iron ranger wedge sole is an 8. Too small for you.
These boots were basically made for construction workers… They wanted to make a heritage boot that was waterproof for carpenters and ironworkers that wouldn’t leave their feet soaked at the end of the day… I truly don’t believe these were directed towards style, more function and comfort on hard concrete surfaces.
@@nismo_zrz3321 yeah, my buddy can’t wear boots like these either.🤣🤣🤣 I don’t have an issue. My feet don’t get hot or sweat so it is kind of nice out in the rain at least extreme rain not getting your feet soaked. I prefer to wear Thorogood boots at work anyways. They’re more comfortable to me.
Your point is totaly good yes but anyone who would wear any Red Wings for outdoor long walk is going to regret it. I have tough feets and wore hard boots for the past 30 years and I wouldnt wear these for treks or mountain walks.
CJ, Have you ever checked out Jean Shop NYC?
@@CJCook I have a feeling you’ll dig their denim jacket quite a lot, I hope you get your hands on one
@@Unstable_Luis I remember being impressed with their store in Meatpacking years ago
Is your promotion relationship with red wings stores over or still going on?
@CJ Cook sorry I gave that for granted as they were sending you over tens of pairs for a long time. They should have, as you were being a great ambassador of the Brand.
@@MrFrescocotone I purchased 90 percent of the Red Wing boots I owned and reviewed.
@CJ Cook you're doing an amazing job and your review are the best out there. You also have great presentation, screen presence and charisma, keep it up! Looking forward to new videos and maybe you could mix it up with updates on your career and endeavors
CJ, you know RW Heritage has been making mistakes since COVID hit. They completely lost their mojo.
Horween leather or Dr. Sole soles anyone? Not with RW, you're going to get the same stuff over and over like Groundhog Day.
I bought my Rangers earlier this year. They were made pre-lockdown and they were clearing them out. I guess I'll wait for the right model/deal to pop up again. I bought Horween Leather Docs in the spring as well.👍🇨🇦
Red Wing has their own leather plant so don’t expect to see them use Horween leather.
@@strengthandbulkMadness as long as they crank out new models in different leathers, that's cool with me.
@@strengthandbulkMadness yes we know. That's fine if they didn't use the same 5 leathers over and over.
If you look at the RW pre-pandemic you'll see they lost their mojo.
Why don't you like moc toes anymore?
After wearing pull-on boots with a slimmer profile, Moc Toes appear chunky and unattractive. I am not Bob The Builder, Hahahaha!
@@CJCook I see what you mean but they look good on you bro they stand out with the heritage look.
Please don't perpetuate sizing issues. A full size difference doesn't help the internet trying to figure out sizing. Love you dude, but the market is already filled with returns and second hand re-sales because of this.
@@CJCook Also, I ordered the Mason Classic pants from G&S yesterday! Excited
Redwing is currently lost. They missed the boat on the massive western and work wear culture that’s has been steadily catching on for the last 5 years. They should have brought back all the pecos styles in multiple leathers. They could have charged $100 more than what their 1178s cost.
judging by your soft little hands, you dont work outside. boots are a tool for alot of people, not just a fashion statement. these as sold would be great for someone who stands the chance to be in water while theyre working on concrete outside. just throwing that out there, that youve forgotten work boots are for work.
Most work sites would not allow these Red Wing boots because they are heritage/homage/fashion boots. You would have to purchase boots from the Red Wing work side of the brand to stand in water whilst working outside.
@@CJCook wow, you really never have worked a job where boots would be a tool. the only thing these lack is a steel toe, which arent required on all jobs. these would probably be outstanding for a fedex or ups delivery person.
@@1hdoilfielddad244 I have actually: I was a water meter reader for the city. I also worked for the government depot doing labor in the field.
@@CJCook you should know better then. those would do well for a meter reader. someone that doesnt need a steel toe but the support of a boot, those would fit the bill well.
Your assessment is not only logical but 100% on point! What on earth was Red Wing thinking? Be a Boot!
