I've been focusing more on my management techniques. This year my honey was the best of the best. Won the Zeigler-Keeney award at the 2023 PA state farm show. In my 9 years of beekeeping, it seems like honeybees are producing less honey each year. I live in the bread belt also... Black Locust used to be a big nectar flow for us. Now honeybees are finding new sources and it has changed the flavor of spring honey crops. The black locust flowers are delicate.
Very interesting. For Texas I went back and looked at USDA NASS reports, and basically Texas production has flatlined… (up to 2020 because USDA takes forever to release the data)

Hi Jake,, great video! Whenever I see a full super above the excluder I want to raise it up and put the empty or less full box right above the excluder. Do you practice that or is that generally to much extra work? Thanks!
I'm in SE TX also and I am seeing the secondary bloom on the Tallow also. I haven't noticed it in past years and I was wondering if it is normal or not.
What do you do with the hives that do not produce as much? Do you requeen and overwinter as a full hive or split them down into nucs? Or just leave them bee?
Just leave them be. We had a few batches of cells with absolutely terrible takes this year and I’m finding there are a good bit that raised there own queen in some yards… so they will not make much of anything.

We don’t under super. That’s a TON of work when we’re racing to put on boxes. I’ve heard it’s good for foundation though but have never experimented.

How much longer do you think you have on your flow? I think ours is pretty much over here in midlands SC.

When stacking supers do you use an upper entrance or offset super?
We have vent holes on the lid but not enough for heavy traffic. That’s it besides the front door.
How much honey is made after tallow?
Not much. We’re gone after tallow doing melon pollination!
Do you run Italians? Or a bunch of everything?
Mutts hahaha. Impossible to really control it. We did get a lot more reds this year though.
