By being at the end of the year UTC, most of the world's population actually experienced it in 2017.
Well.... isn't UTC closest to GMT? In which case it would be half the world's population, as GMT is "0", with timezones plus/minus 12hrs on either side

The 2012 leap second glitch was caused by a bug in the linux kernel's timers not taking kindly to the automatic update of the second. I remember having to deal with it personally when all of our servers started to seize up. It sucked, but at least we could fix it ourselves. If you used a cloud provider you were at the mercy of when they decided to reboot your host. (You could actually temporarily fix it by manually resetting the time, which was good enough until you could install a patched kernel)

Fun fact: for religious functions Jews use apparent solar time so some hours are longer or shorter which mostly effects prayer times
Solar time (as determined by a sundial) was long considered the "correct" time for most contexts, since it reflected the actual position of the sun. When accurate, stable mechanical clocks became widespread in the 17th century, their time had to be corrected when set by consulting a sundial and a table for the equation of time. (Around the same time, GMT was established to help calculate longitude, though this only became practical a few decades later after the invention of the marine chronometer.) By the 18th century, "equation clocks" existed that could mechanically convert to solar time. It wasn't until the spread of railroads in the 19th century that it became important to synchronize time standards at different longitudes, making apparent solar time inconvenient. This "railway time" eventually led to modern time zones and the universal acceptance of ephemeris time (mean solar time) rather than apparent solar time.
That thumbnail picture of the Mondaine (modified to "Mundaine" LOL!) is what caught my eye. The modified abbreviations for the Swiss Railway company is also hilarious! I have that exact watch.

0:26 I can see Tom Scott losing his mind right now
Love the watch in the feed! Great, fun watch.
Here’s a theory I’d like someone who has the skills to take seriously.
By August, 2020, most international and a great deal of internal aircraft flights had been curtailed. That’s hundreds of thousand jet air craft on the ground and not at 30,00+ feet.
By applying conservation of angular momentum, the rotation of the earth should have increased. Not by much but measurably at least.
This could give rise to a ‘lost’ second. All I need is somebody to do the math, or point me at where I can find a running average of mean solar day.
As always, I love your work.
Cheers
That sounds like xkcd waiting to happen

5:06 -HAI's great trivia show is actually Wendover's "A very good trivia show".
Sam is an International Superspy.
UTC is just about the only consistent way we have to store and transmit Dates and Times. If you ever end up writing a programm, do yourself a favor and only store, retreive and transmit UTC. You can convert it into local time during display, but at least you got one consistent storage.
UTC timestamps are great for storing and transmitting timestamps and specific instants in time, but sometimes you just want to represent a calendar day or clock time, regardless of time zone. For example, the classic start of the work day is 9am - irrespective of the time zone.
This channel is solely responsible for keeping the stock footage industry alive.
This is why my clocks at home are always getting off everything makes sense now

Life has been all downhill since the extra second.
The Earth is gaining ice, and that would explain Earth speeding up.
1. sloshing liquid water would cause a reduction in rotational speed.
2. Conservation of mass near its center of rotation (ice near the poles) would also cause an increase in speed. Melting poles would cause more mass around the equator from liquid water migrating there due to Earth's rotation, slowing down the rotation like an ice skater with their arms out...

how about a video about the tones tv commercials aren't allowed to play behind their ads because they wake up sleeping people? (but youtube commercials are allowed to play)
Thank you for the Nebula timestamp. It strikes me that watching only on Nebula is a double-edged sword, no ads (and maybe no sponsor read) and all content directly, but it also makes CZcams think that I don't like the channel anymore, which hurts the channel by thinking the video is not worth recommending to others, and it hurts my recommendation profile because CZcams might start thinking I no longer like this content.
I for one am tired of having Nebula pushed down my throat. I'm all for supporting creators but I despise paywalled content
Love the SBB clock on the thumbnail
It is also funny because the SBB clocks stops for around 2 seconds at the 60 second mark.
Ice caps melting *_slows_* our rotation, as all that H₂O is free to head to the equator, which is further away from Earth's axis of rotation.
Conservation of angular momentum and all that jazz.
EXACTLY! I am glad you caught that as well.
My comment was much like your comment. Here it is:
The Earth is gaining ice, and that would explain Earth speeding up.
1. sloshing liquid water would cause a reduction in rotational speed.
2. Conservation of mass near its center of rotation (ice near the poles) would also cause an increase in speed. Melting poles would cause more mass around the equator from liquid water migrating there due to Earth's rotation, slowing down the rotation like an ice skater with their arms out...

Should the ice caps melting slow down the earth rotation, not speed it up, as mass moves away from the core. Similar to an ice skater moving there arms away from there body?
Now I can tell my kids that one year that I lived was 1 second longer than it should have been.
So we celebrated New Years one second to early?
2016: "hey, hey, hey there, can you hang on a sec?"
It just boggles my mind that we can calculate the earth rotation, so absolutely precisely. I just can’t wrap my mind around it but I don’t deny it.
Doing a plank at the gym takes a second and turns it into a year.
Why is all the rotation of the Earth show in opposite direction?
