- In this video, I will be covering when various cartoons, animations, and franchises post-1970's enter the public domain, also nothing pertaining to Disney. There may be some inaccuracies in this video where the years may be slightly off, especially since TV pilots are copyrighted before the actual first season airs.
Disclaimers: The current copyright law in the US is highly subject to change, so expect this video to eventually become dated in the future. Also the life + 70 years protection only applies to works published by an individual person such as a book or indie film. This law does not apply to media produced by a collective group of people or a company such as television shows and movies. Man, I can't wait for someone to make a Family Guy horror movie in 2095!

Honestly, I think Mondo Media took the right approach by allowing fan animations to exist.
Truth be told, if they were more restrictive with their IP, the fandom would have most likely died out a long time ago.

Exactly! It defeats the original purpose of copyrights in the first place. Copyrights are meant to ensure authors, creators and artists can profit off their own works for a limited amount of time and after that, then everyone can use and access them, so that we can build upon our culture and inspire creativity. But thanks to greedy corporations like Disney and estates, among others, we've been deprived of that repeatedly just to suit their own interests, thus setting back the public domain many years than where it's supposed to be!

Blame Disney for that. Originally, a work went into the public domain like 50 years after its creation but then Disney pulled some strings to pass this copyright extension act to add an additional 45 years or so to it, just so that they could keep making a few extra bucks off of trademarking Mickey Mouse.

How to calculate public domain date:
Step 1: Take the year of the character’s creation.
Step 2: Add 96 to that year.
Step 3: Done!

Them extending copyright law like this is really stupid. Like most of these shows would be extremely dated by the time they enter the public domain. And their original audiences would probably be very old or already dead when it happens.

man public domains get me scared alot tbh. The fact on how it can ruin a show's reputation with anyone being able to make animations of the characters doing prob weird stuff.
I don't mind it, since it's freedom of expression and creativity and people can choose to ignore it and properly judge it at their own discretion. The corporations have too much power anyway
People do that regardless of the property being in public domain (see Rule 34) and it doesn't "ruin the reputation" of the property. People understand that the weird fan content is separate from the source material.

Yep, according to US copyright law fair use. Satirical works and parodies are always allowed. International law however isn't as lenient or transformative.
The idea that I may be around for SpongeBob entering the public domain is weirdly scary, but also kind of nice since CZcams Poopers and other types of content creators can create whatever they want without worrying about Viacom. (I’ll never forgive them for taking down “SpongeBob and Patrick Sell Poop”)

Dude, if you think many of the shows you watch were old, The Gumby Seasons from the 1950s and 1960s, considering Art Clokey passed away in 2010, will eventually become public domain sometime in the 2040s-2060s.

Using that math, SpongeBob will enter the public domain in the year 2088 which is 70 years after the death of Stephen Hillenburg. It's still way too long in my opinion.

If you want to use any of these characters when they enter the public domain prepare to upload your consciousness to a computer because most of us aren't living to see many of these cartoons make it to the public domain or too old to even be aware

For More information on when you can use Total Drama characters for those curious--
The only finalized character that is up for the public domain in 2103 is Geoff. You can still use the beta versions of Duncan, Leshawna, Lindsay, Trent, Gwen, Beth, Harold, Tyler, and DJ though along with the original name of total drama, Camp TV, but not the name total drama (Island, Action, or any of its respective seasons yet those are still copyrighted). So incase you wanna make a Camp TV horror movie with Geoff and the beta versions of some of your favorite characters, you can in 2103.
The Total Drama Island franchise wouldn't become public domain until 2107, which is when the final designs of Chris, Chef, Ezekiel, Eva, Noah, Justin, Katie, Tyler, Izzy, Cody, Beth, Sadie, Courtney, Harold, Trent, Bridgette, Lindsay, DJ, Leshawna, Duncan, Heather, Gwen, and Owen are now public domain along with Geoffs design which was already public domain since 2103. You can now use the name "Total Drama Island" or just "Total Drama". I'm not sure about the Action or the other seasons though.
2109 is when the name "Total Drama Action" becomes public domain, along with the "Total Drama Action Aftermath"
In late 2109, the original name for Total Drama World Tour, "Total Drama Musical" is now public domain. Not total drama world tour yet though.
2110 is when the characters Blaineley, Sierra, and Alejandro become public domain along with the name "Total Drama World Tour", and "Total Drama World Tour Aftermath" respectively.
2111 is when the beta designs for Total Drama Revenge of the Island characters come out. You cannot use the name "Total Drama Revenge of the Island" yet though, but you can use Total Drama Reloaded which was the original name for this season. Beta designs for characters like Mike, Cameron, Lightning, Sam, Anne Maria, Staci, Brick, Jo (originally named Mary meaning you can't use Jo yet only Mary), Dakota, Zoey, Scott, and Dawn (originally named Molly so you can't use the name Dawn yet only Molly).
2112 is when you can now use the name "Total Drama Revenge of the Island". The final designs of characters Staci, Dakota, B, Dawn, Brick, Anne Maria, Mike, Jo, Scott, Zoey, Lightning, and Cameron are now public domain.
In 2113 the name "Total Drama All Stars" is now public domain"
In late 2113, the beta designs for Sugar, Sky, Dave, Sammy, Rodney, Ella, Beardo, Amy, Shawn, Leonard, Jasmine, Max, Scarlett, and Topher are all public domain.
2114, the name "Total Drama Pahkitew Island is now public domain along with the final designs for Beardo, Leonard, Amy, Rodney, Sammy, Ella, Topher, Dave, Max, Scarlett, Jasmine, Sugar, Sky, and Shawn.
In 2123, the Tota Drama Island reboot characters, Caleb, Axel, Nichelle, Scary Girl, Damien, MK, Wayne, Raj, Ripper, Zee, Chase, Emma, Julia, Millie, Bowie, and Priya are all public domain.
In 2124 the finale of the second season of the Total Drama Island reboot would have become 100 years old but there was no new characters or titles to be copyrighted that would become public domain in 2124.
Man, it feels Total Drama is abandoned in 2222.

Important thing to note is for Ben 10 you'd only be able to use CLASSIC Ben, this means kid ben, kid gwen, and technically only 4 of his aliens. It might include all10 if the intro is anything but assuming thats the case they'd only be the simple styled versions instead of their real designs. But the aliens you'd be able to use as Heatblast, Wildmutt, Diamondhead, and XLR8 a big reason is cause while Ben 10 originally started in 2005 every episode past the pilot began airing in 2006 so you'd need to wait a whole year to use characters like Dr. Animo, Kevin 11, Cannonbolt, or even the concept of Max being a Plumber and what the Plumbers are. You also would only be able to use broken Vilgax so technically most of the stuff you get for Ben 10 comes out in 2102

In most countries, it's usually life plus 70 years after the creator dies. But some countries follow the rule of the shorter term, where if the work is out of copyright in its home country, it's also public domain in the OTHER country.
I have already lived to see Winnie-the-Pooh and Mickey Mouse enter the public domain.

The 1976 remake will enter the public domain in 2072.
KING KONG LIVES will enter the public domain in 2082.
Peter Jackson's remake will enter the public domain in 2101.

Health and science improvements expanding the human lifespan might be justify to extend the copyright. This rationale was used to extend the copyright in 1998.

Cartoons should become public at least 10-20 years after their release. It would be very useful if the authors had a creative crisis. And then they could evaluate the work of fans, be inspired by it, or even buy them out from fans and broadcast their work in movies and on TV. So, due to the creativity of fans, cartoons would never go into stagnation

If I was a lawmaker, I would say 20 years after the series concludes would be reasonable. If it's a long runner with no signs of stopping like The Simpsons, I would say 50 years after the pilot aired.

Life + 70 Years rule does not apply to works owned by a corporation or produced by a group of people. Instead, it will be 95 years after production of the pilot finished

I was born in 1987, I hope they make medical breakthroughs to extend the lifespan of humans by 2117, so that people my age could live well into their 130s by 2117 and beyond, since I turn 130 years old in the year 2117...
