I was 10 years old living in Smithfield, which is a neighborhood in Birmingham. I could walk to Legion Field in 10 minutes from grandparents house. I’m…..50 now. Damn, times flies.
I was in only in the second grade when this happen. Classes shut down and TV's were brought in where we watched all day. Many kids cried that day, because so many knew how important this man was to their own dad down to them. Hard to believe now at 40 yrs of age that he meant what he did. Truly "The Supercoach" of college football. Thanks Bear
I was in the 3rd grade when it happened. I remember hearing that morning that. Coach Bryant was in the hospital. That afternoon when school let out and my mother was picking me up from school to take me to Children's Choir practice, she had the radio on announcing Coach Bryant's death.
Effectively, Bear Bryant was the patron saint of the entire state of Alabama everyone liked him for a different reason, but the important thing was that everyone liked him and he was a rallying point for everything football stands for
UAT should dedicate and rename their stadium as the Coach John McKay shrine. Coach McKay and USC saved the UAT football program and Bear Bryant's football career. Just another fact from the great USC Moose. The Moose only states facts and that there is a solid one.
+Me Goofy Never heard of him. Wait, you mean that little midget who has the # 1 recruiting class every year because he cheats and buys players. I remember him.
3finger10. First of all, every, and I do mean EVERY college is buying players, so trying to be the pot that's calling the kettle black is just downright embarrassing. Now then, on to the next. You say that Alabama fans dig up the Bear. You know, they do mention Paul Bear Bryant a lot. His name being spoken from the tongues of the Alabama nation is born from those who know of his legacy, and loved the man for who he was and what he stood for. You think its outside of the ordinary for any other college to often remember a great leader they once had? Penn State talks about Jo Paterno. Virginia Tech will always talk about Frank Beamer. Tom Osborn's legacy will never die for Nebraska fans either. So why is it considered a negative thing that Alabama fans so often fondly remember their most influential leader they've seen in all their many years of success and championships? People do make an impact on others lives. Perhaps even you could learn a lesson or two from a once great man, and that goes for all the greatest leaders of yesterday. Paul didn't coach a game. He coached people. Nick does the same. They both care deeply for their men, despite the grueling camps and the strict rules. In short, to any of you who are severely uneducated about the man and whose only knowledge of the man comes from the gut of their own hatred towards another program, learn before you can speak. Learn well. Because there isn't a single one of you that will ever be able to become half the man he was, admittedly not even myself. So show some respect for the dead. One day, you'll join them. R.I.P Paul "Bear" Bryant. Regardless of anyone's words, the people intelligent enough to actually fully see what you really were on and off the field still miss you greatly.
why don't you just shut your big " YAPPER !!!! " you can keep making false allegations while you are " LIVIN IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER !!!! " you are a envious fan another team . why don't you shut your damn " CAKE HOLE !!!!

I attended Lyman Ward Military Academy in 1983. All cadets were granted a day off that day.
I had a cousin who was attending Lyman Ward at the time named Gerald Blackwell.
I was at Elmwood, standing behind Bob Hope and Joe Namath. Bob was in a wheelchair.

@@jenniferbice8998 Was he like in college in those days?
@@montecarlo4294 Coach Saban graduated from Kent State University in the early 1970's.

Sadest non-racially charged day in the state's history.
