    Interesting exercise - especially for someone like myself who is getting back to the clarinet after some 20 years (In the meanwhile, I focused on the banjo for relaxing). Good content, good site.

      Thanks Steven! Banjo is cool. I wish I could play it:)

    Super cool! Definitely trying this later. I’d be interested to see if using a COVID bell cover will have the same affect. I find it incredibly difficult to play a the B on the treble clef staff with a bell cover on.

      The bell cover makes it difficult for me to play that B too! It doesn’t close it off like I am suggesting, just blocks it enough that the B is almost impossible to play and the C sounds weird too. I have two bell covers. One is better for the B than the other, but it still pretty much sucks to play with it on.

      Hi Simon! Thanks for watching. I am glad you found it somewhat inspiring. I am challenging myself to make some more videos that have value and come under 8 minutes. It’s difficult….I love talking about clarinet and it’s hard for me to shut myself up:)

      @@clarinetninja speaking personally videos under 10 mins are much easier to consume 'in between life'. Anything longer has to go into my watch later playlist for when kids/work/dog/chores/practice/etc aren't demanding my time 🙂

      @@simonob007 I totally get the demands on time:) my daughter makes an occasional appearance in the videos and is a constant partner as I edit the videos. She is four so number blocks, cookie swirl C and some others are the soundtrack to my life at the moment. I will keep some coming in dad friendly lengths!:)

    Wait a minute, let me just make sure I understand this because I keep having a lot of internal debate: So we have to use our voice box in order to change the pitch of the note but you don’t want to be tense in the neck right? And the tongue doesn’t move right? It should be in the same elevated position it’s always in right? And low notes require the lower pitch sound while high notes require the high pitched sound……right?

    • @clarinetninja
      @clarinetninja  Před rokem +1

      There are seemingly contradictory things at play. I agree. Let me see if I can make sense of it a little more.
      The front (tip) of our tongue does not move.
      The back of our tongue (where our voicing happens) does move….(however, we don’t really move it in the way that we move our arms and legs). It moves, but we don’t really move it with direct intention.
      There is also this same kind of change and opening with our soft pallet in our mouth. It will move but it’s more like when we yawn. It will move because it is triggered to not so much because we place it with intention.
      This is all most effectively driven by one’s ears and what we hear. It’s similar to dining a high or low note. Everyone can change pitch in their voice, but nobody is really taking direct action to do it. It all kind of “just happens” when we want it to because our body will make the changes on its own
