- ROG Ally + RTX 4090 XG Mobile is an insane combo! But how does it compare with a powerful gaming laptop like ROG Strix Scar 17 2023?
- Věda a technologie
OMG, the amount of time I've wasted on Reddit trying to find out more about the XG Mobile 4090 for the Ally. This video is ALL I NEEDED. Thanks a ton for putting together what I think is the most relevant frame of reference for folks looking to invest in this gaming solution!
I was surprised to see "only" 8k subscribers. Your production quality, detail and audio are top notch. You'll be famous soon.
Thank you for this video. I've been trying to find info on the xg mobile with the rog ally and you hit the mark.
I rarely comment on videos but I love this guy, the way he speaks, and his presentation style, the depth of analysis, I found this very useful and fun to watch. Thanks for this video!
what an amazing comparison video. You give all of the critical information and show the data to prove it. Awesome job! Definitely going to subscribe to support your channel.
Bro I have seen like a good amount of these rog reviews this is by far the best of all them by far. I subscribed because of it keep up the good work.
Damn this was such clear and easy comparison i have see, good video and explanation, now i want rog ally more
I just bought the 6850m from Asus. I had to put my email up for notifications. I missed it yesterday by a few hours but today I made sure to setup my notifications and jumped on it right away.
I just grabbed the RTX 4090 mobile card for my ROG Ally and HOLY SH*T its incredible!. Thank you for the fantastic content, I've attempted to watch several videos on the subject and most of them get so bogged down in incomprehensible (at least for me) stats that they become a slog but you presented it all in a fun and engaging way. Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future.
Awesome video and comparison. I know the ally has some issues at launch like any other portable PC, but I have had mine since launch day and haven't had any issues *knock on wood*. No portable device, console, PC, or any other gadget is perfect for free of issues, but I do believe that Asus has created an amazing little device with the ROG allied that truly makes PC gaming portable. This device has literally made every other portable device obsolete for me.
The Asus XG Mobile is an awesome add-on, however I do believe that the $2,000 price tag for the 4090 version is quite a bit absurd since we're talking about a laptop version of the 4090, which is not nearly as powerful as the desktop version. With that in mind, Asus has reduced the price of the 6850 XT model down to $700, which I find is reasonable and adds a massive boost in performance to the ROG Ally.
yeah but where do you find the xt model? they dont exist
simple and easy to understand reviews, man u just earn a subscribe! can't wait to see you doing review about another new tech.
Fantastic video, you earned yourself a sub!
Best video about ally with 4090, thanks.
Never thought I would play Infamous 2 in a handheld console or ToTK without a Switch
Im curious, as im not sure, when the xg mobile is plugged in, do you need to change the gpu ram allocation? Or does plugging it in deactivate the allocation and make it all go to peocessor,
do you think rog ally + xg mobile 4090 can run starfield at high settings 4K 60fps? no way to test right now since it's coming this september but if it runs at 60 fps (unlike xbox series x at just 30), i'm all in on this rog ally/xg mobile combo!
If. It will. The xg 6850 will run.
would changing the vram setting in armory crate to a lower setting help with cpu bottle neck? (setting to auto or below 4g>?) i dont have an xg mobile to try this out. also would it be more feasible to get a xg mobile 3080 or amd lower tier xg mobile gpu be a better buy since it won't hit bottleneck>?
Thanks for the review,I bought a Lenovo legion 5 pro ✌🏼😄
Do you have issues plugging in wireless mouse & keyboard and experience input lag when rog ally connected to 4090 on a 4k monitor?
Wait, this is still pretty much cheaper than an RTX 4090 based laptop. We're talking $2699.99 vs $3300 plus (unless they've dropped a whole lot). That said, you are stuck with 16GB of RAM on the ROG Ally, with at least around 1GB allocated to the integrated graphics. Great device, I own one, but I also own an RTX 4090 Strix Scar 18 and wouldn't trade it for the Ally.
Awesome Review
Definitely will be getting one in the future
I'd love to see some comparison and optimization for Starfield on these setups.
Ah yes spent $2000 over just to bottleneck your CPU. Great job Asus.
Not if you plan on playing at 4k
My man in the video did 1080p with dlss balanced in a 4090 😭 even in the strongest processor you'll get bottlenecked at 1080p AND dlss.
Plus you can buy the 4090 and change for future Ally 2 with strongest cpu.
The 4090 isn't specifically ment for the ally it's ment for a different asus model, the ally just so happens to have the same connectors as that model. The ally is more ment for the 3080 model. But I'm sure over time with updates it will support the 4090 better
Was thinking the same. Idk if you could rise the power to 40 wats and disable the igpu from z1 extreme to get better performance. In video I didn't see once z1 to boost to 5ghz.
Would be interesting if FPS are different on ally screen vs external monitor. Using external monitor might free up bandwidth on the cable btw ally and xg mobile.
Thank you very much ! Cool review .. i wish you could make a review testing alan wake 2
Very well done.
HI,
Nice video and the results are pretty impressive. I like the Ally a lot, i have buied it 5 days ago. I think it is nice idea to use external gpu. But you can't use on different laptop than asus. I think was much better to have the compatibility with others computer also. But i think it is very good idea because to buy the ally + the external 4090 is much cheaper than buy a laptop with 4090 gtx already.
We know that's Asus strategy to get people to buy more hardware just like Valve strategy is to get people buy more games on Steam at 80% off that they will never play. It's hard to resist not buying games on Steam summer sale. As triple A titles demand a powerful gpu it going to be hard to resist not buying a XG mobile.
@@smidlee7747 Not tell it at me, i have buied horizon zero dawn and Elden Ring in one day :D
It would be nice for all these gaming consoles to have a sim port or ESIM to add independent data service for when WiFi isn’t available
I think that would decimate the already poor battery life from these devices and the manufacturers probably assume people are just gonna use their phones as wifi hotspots when theyre on the move
Can we normal external gpu to it. Any connector avelable in market?
I try Asus Rog Ally + Rog XG Mobile 4090 ... it's impressive, but the weak point of all of this is only 16Go Ram (with 1Go min lost to GPU 780M), it is really short if you play in 4K, you can't let a browser open because every Go will count particulary recent game. But this is really an interessant combo, so bad the XG Mobile are so silly expensive.
helpful informative and critically analyzed video
Are these in stock yet?
The Ally is a beast!
Ally with optional XG mobile definately a big winner as i play different kinds of game. from emulator to extreme game.
Got my Asus Rog Ally at launch. Put a 2 TB SSD in it.
Was thinking about getting this XG Mobile RTX 4090 eGPU. Watching rhe video as I type.
Or I might just get a RTX 4080 Desktop.
The lack of thunderbolt was the turning point for me.
Ally + XG mobile, I like the aspect of the setup that I can take with me on the road and use at home. pair this with a WD Black P50 and you've got serious space for gaming...
if you have money to waste this is cool.. i have an asus ally myself, but the problem for me is the fact i cannot upgrade ram on the portable console so i really wouldnt wanna invest almost 3k into something that is stuck with only 16gb of ram!!! 16gb ram isnt much now days!! My gaming laptop with just a 3060 has 16gb and it gets used up quickly!! on top of that the fact you just connect it when its already booted up shows me it still is using the integrated GPU so using this external GPU does not free up anymore system ram!! also would be interesting to know if the console runs cooler when your not using the integrated GPU! it gets hot as is and i wouldnt expect this device to last more than a few years with heavy use! if your going to use it at a desktop pc it would be nice to know that it would run cooler using the external GPU so it will have a bit more longevity
My PC pulls near 1000 watts just to play a game.. This might end up being a solution. Ally otw and save up for the XG(if one i want is ever in stock). Maybe a 79xx amd card would be 2024 model.
can you suggest me a powerbank which i use to play at turbo 30watt
Anker 737
handheld>laptop for mobile gaming
using a laptop for mobile gaming gets quite annoying, needing a flat surface for mouse pad and to post your laptop on. yeah you can use your laptop on your lap but anytime you play somewhat of a demanding game, it starts to heat up and then in turn make you hot. Even when I use a fan cooling pad, having your left arm rest on the laptop to use the keyboard will keep you pretty toasty. looking forward to purchasing a handheld.
now to just decide for lenovo legion go or ROG ally. I can't seem to find the information just yet if the lenovo legion go has a thunderbolt that would support an EGPU, that may be the deciding factor for me.
They need to make that xg mobile connection smaller and more streamlined lines, possible a right angle connector, it’s just ugly and looks easy to break something as is. They also need to do slightly better on price with these xg mobiles. 1300 is the sweet spot, I don’t see anyone dishing out 2k plus for one if the goal is mainstream adaptation. With that being said, a full 4k gaming setup with the option to undock and continue play in bed, outside, whatever, is a pretty sweet deal. I personally wouldn’t mind ditching my gaming laptop for a good MACBOOK and letting the ally take over as my main windows PC
This is exactly the setup I've had since the release of the ROG Ally. A MacBook Pro 16 for everything else, and the Asus ROG Ally paired with an XG Mobile 6850M on an MSI 21:9 144Hz monitor for gaming on PC. It works exceptionally well, and I got the entire setup for €1400 with a promotion during the ASUS launch.
An apple fanboy complaining about pricing. Lul
I think it would be interesting to put the connector on the bottom of the Ally, and then on the XG side, just have the connector "built-in" so that you just drop the Ally on the connector. More like the Switch dock, conceptually speaking. And, yeah, I'd go for the XG at $1300, maybe by Christmas.
You really need some basic bar charts for those numbers. Its not that hard to.
Its crazy how this handheld with the XG mobile is stronger than the ps5 and xsx
it's crazy that a 2-3000 $ combo is more powerful than 600$?
3:33 is that vga?
The irony I found with the Rog Ally is that I"m having problems running an old Steam game (new ones seem to be fine) and an old gog game.
thats a Microsoft Windows OS problem
I would buy the rtx 4090 xg mobile. However they are sold out.
Is anyone haveing issues splaying Warzone ? I launch into a game and only my left joystick registered. My right stick nothing happens? I am on bios 319 and updated everything??!!! I love the ally but this is a game I would want to work flawlessly. Any suggestion?
Very interesting indeed
I have been thinking about this... can you imagine if Apple built mobile gaming devices using its M chips? If they can cut through video editing like butter, I wonder if properly optimized if they would cut through games as well.
No thanks
They support streaming and it works awesomely
Gaming support is a whole different ball game comparing it to editing. Which is why there different GPUs for gaming and editing. Nvidia quadro for editing and gtx for gaming. So being able to edit video easily doesn't mean it will be good at gaming.
That's exactly their plan now and why they're investing so much into gaming. People think their meme'ing but they are well positioned due to the architecture. Think about it, we have reached diminuishing returns and can't keep stacking like we've been doing till now, that's why intel, nvidia and amd have switched their research and development to similar approach when it comes to architecture. But while they have to do it from scratch, Apple has been doing it for years.
They traded their early game for the long game if you look it from a business standpoint, while focusing instead on business and ease of use. It's well developed and ready now tho. So the issue is on the software side of things which is what they are solving now with their compatibility layers and other driver specific stuff and solutions such as upscaling (which is really impressive tbf). And the applications available (which is why they are throwing money at devs)
The problem with apple is the closed off nature. They have the tech, the positioning, everything to take gaming a step further. But the system is so closed that unless they change I highly doubt anyone would go team apple. Doesn't matter if they have a better performance down the road either if they ever made gaming dedicated products. They could have double the performance of their windows counterpart, and you'd stick to windows and your amd/intel/nvidia combo just due to having actual things to use and play.
It's what's happening with their VR Headset. On paper it's a great product if it could be applied to PCVR, many people would buy it. Instead every PCVR gamer and sim enthusiast disregarded it because most likely it's not going to be able to be connected to steam without modding. So it doesn't matter that it has better hardware and optics than every headset on the market because their approach was to close off other platforms from use with the headset.
Even if they are paying devs to develop and port for it, noone cares. The games will only run natively on the headset and will be pretty limited. What's the point of having a 3000$ headset with insane res if you're running it in potato mode for games, similar to a quest? So the Apple Vision will be just for business and general use.
If apple ever switched their approach this would change, but they won't so most people won't even have to bother with them when it comes to gaming. Gamers and devs value open source, modding, and a lot of things for gaming.
@@robinv1485 Love this thoughtful and insightful response. Considering the closed nature of Apple, wouldn't you say consoles are close as well? Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch are closed.
Perhaps Apple will have a 'console' app which could make Apple products a hybrid PC/Console device.
I do take your point though, and its a strong one, but I am optimistic.
Man the Algorithm is definitely Screwing you over. You are great and deserve waaay more subs. Your presentation was superb and quality was top notch
Try using Rog flow X16 4070 + XG Mobile 4090 🚨
wow!
3rd companies should make a cheaper version like with a 4050 or 4060 variant less price also
U also have rx 6850m xt
Sadly that short chunky connector from the XG Mobile to Ally mean the Ally is no longer portable. Nice as a desktop option, but why not buy an actual desktop PC for that.
You can carry the Ally+XGM iin your bag pack. Fittiing the PC into a bag pack is a little bit hard.
For me it's perfect because I don't have much space and especially not a for a desktop setup, majority of the time I use it handheld but when I want to play, say starfield that's coming out soon, I don't have a PC or Xbox so the xg mobile + my ally will be the way for me to get the best out of that game with the limited amount of space i have
@@vicrattlehead5051 I agree that it's great to have the option of it becoming a desktop replacement, and the XG Mobile does a superb job to bring the Ally up to gaming desktop standards. I just wish the connection between the Ally and XG was more user friendly. As it's virtually impossible to hold the Ally as a handheld with the XG connected. Perfect to use it connected to your monitor, but not to give desktop performance as a handheld.
@@exponentialbet6292 oh yeah it's definitely not portable once connected to it but I think most people who connect to it will probably substitute it as a desktop rather than try using it handheld but I do think it would've been nice to have the option
Does that mean that the Rog ally is kind of upgradeble, since it may come more and more powerful xg mobiles?
Yes. Well, you cannot get better than a 4090 right now…
Yes upgradeable as in the graphics card. You can get the AMD for about $800 the Nvidia for 1,099.00 and the newest Nvidia 4090 for $2000. If you want HDMI 2.1 which is 4k and 120hz get the AMD one or newest 4090. You will get amazing quality from all of them. I personally have the RTX 3080 Nvidia and is amazing on my 4k tv. Just be sure how to use it properly in armoury crate
So there letting us getting different different xg gpu or whatever
@@caseybelew1262 yes there are 3 different versions you can get at 3 prices. $800 $1100 and $2000 depends on what you want additionally
But you cannot add more RAM to ROG Ally.
So the R.O.G. ally can be the most powerful handheld. I have the RTX 3080 but does not have HDMI 2.1 so i can only do 4k 60hz on my tv. Its ok still more powerful than any console plus xbox game pass. Also you can get the 3080 for $1099.00 vs $2k for the newest one. With taxes half price from Asus now. So i got it till the 50 series. Also the asus plug is for 4 different devices they make and only for Asus devices. Is is 63 gbps vs thunderbolt 4 at 40 gbps. Much faster bandwidth. So no one can touch this device with a external GPU from Asus. The AMD is $800 the Nvidia 3080 is $1100 and newest one he used with hdmi 2.1 is $2000
HUH? ally comes with egpu for free?😂
The 6850M XT has HDMI 2.1 as well. I would say if you don't care about RT then it's a better value to get it over the 3080. I'm going to wait until next year to pick up the 4090 on sale. It will be a bigger upgrade for the Ally that's why. I'm planning to use an external monitor as well.
Thanks a lot now you can't get one like that without paying a ton of money!!!!!!!!!
When using the rog ally with the 4090, if you use the ally screen youll get slightly worse results
The screen is a massive
Bottleneck for
The 4090.
@@ninhosensei yeah, thats why i would always use external with the 4090 hooked up (why wouldnt you🤷♂️)
How do you say "muică" in english ?
😂😂😂😂😂😂
That connector is ABSURDLY large.
The module is just so Asus can sell more devices because at this point, you can just assemble a desktop PC which will be far more capable and upgradable and with FSR 3, my Ally can get 60 to 102 fps on latest games
🆒
How much did they pay you
How ever much a 4090 xg mobile costs 😂
Just to make it clear the 4090 mobile gpu isn't actually a 4090 it's a mobile card so it produces same output as a 4060 a pc version so your paying over 2 grand for something that actually isn't what they sell it as
I figured in the months to come some people will end up leaving it docked which is Asus strategy to get people to buy these expensive XG Mobiles.
Yep....2 weeks and I'm getting the 4080 lol
@robertsmith20022 where did you order yours been having trouble finding one
Rog Ally is the perfect option for gamers who prefer portable gaming and are on a budget. It offers excellent performance even without an external GPU. However, if I have a substantial amount of money to spare and desire an incredibly powerful mobile gaming experience, I would invest in a $3500 gaming laptop.
I'm actually getting rid of my gaming laptop in favor of the Ally+xG 4090. My laptop was an Origin EON 17X with 11900K and RTX 3080M and cost 3800 when I bought it. This handheld config does effectively the same thing in terms of power for 2700. The EON also weighs 8.5 lbs without the dual power bricks. As someone who travels a ton and is a parent, having the mobility is worth it's weight in gold for me. The weight savings alone versus a gaming laptop is incredible. That's just my use case though, consolidating a gaming laptop and full sized PC into handheld FF.
@@aktrazerWhat about the Flow line with the 13" screen size? They are really light weight (the Z line tablet runs cooler than the X line 2-in-1).
@@celinek2690 It's funny you mentioned that because that's what I'm getting for Christmas. Lol. I'll have the xG, Z13 and Ally and can switch between them. Already now I switch between just Ally and Ally+xG so having the Z13 as well will give me more options.
@@aktrazer What do you think about the z13 standing alone, and what your model? I'm about to buy one in 2 weeks, would love your opinion
@@matheusbraga5106 I have the i9-13900H/4050 model. It can handle MW3 on Basic settings and give a solid 110-120hz to the display. Even more if you back down the quality and play with DLSS and such. It's a solid platform on its own. Taking it on a trip this weekend.
I'd still buy the 4090 EGPU. Think about it, every laptop out there with a 4090 is about 1 inch thin so it throttles either way and gets REALLY hot. They cost as much or more than the ally with this EGPU config. They consume more power. They aren't that much easier to carry with. Sure a desktop could be cheaper n shit but do you really want to load a 1000 Watt PSU just to play minecraft with RTX? At this point, Id buy this EGPU, disable VRAM for the IGPU i the Ally and utilize the Ally as the full fledge PC.
Has someone tried to play with xg mobile in his bed?
I haven't tried in my own bed yet, but I could give his bed a try if he let's me
I think the cable is to short 😂 , no pun intended lol😅
Just buy a portable Monitor and now youve got somewhat of a replacement for everything a laptop can do
So I'd rather bring multiple devices than gaming laptop ? and also spend more money? tell me more about wasting money
A laptop would be more portable than an Ally then. You have to bring a monitor , Xg Mobile, a keyboard , a mouse and a controller with all those wires while a gaming laptop just not the adapter, mouse (optional since it has a track pad) and a controller. I can easily carrying the laptop under my arms.
A laptop will always have its place but having it separately has its benefits as well. Let's just say you could get a 4090 labtop for around $2,700-$4,000. Not sure how much the Scar 17 is in this video. The Legion 7i 4090 is a lot cheaper. Anyways an Ally + XGM 4090 is $2,700. At this point I rather get the 7i 4090 as it will offer me more for the same price. If you add on a nice 17" 144Hz screen that's another $250 but it could be used for other devices tho unlike your labtop. If you add on a nice keyboard and mouse that's around $150-$200. Now you're looking around $3,200 or so. Upgrade your storage to 2TB? That's another $120 so in total it's going to be around $3,320. In the end it's still cheaper than most higher 4090 laptops. The only other difference is that you're limited to 16GB of RAM on the Ally vs a labtop that could go up to 128GB.
You just have to ask yourself if you will be using the Ally in this sort of manner or not. Imo the Ally itself is good enough for most games. If needed you could add on an XGM in the future as an upgrade to play on an external monitor that is and not so much the Ally screen. If you could afford both devices then that would be best. The Ally is way more portable than a laptop and makes way less noise as well. Bring your labtop if you need to do some work and heavier gaming at the same time. Or just bring a portable monitor with your Ally and call it a day.
I just don’t understand who this is for. You can get an entire 4070 laptop (that has a higher TDP) for less than this thing.
Great comparison. I think you’re right on the money with your opinions. I went with the 6850 to pair with my ally. Loving it so far.
Same here… it’s perfect!
Plus it’s about 1500 USD… it’s such a good price for what you get
It's 800 usd you got ripped off
@hows the input lag using the xg mobile setup? I know when I use the rog ally the thumb sticks have a small delay. Wondering if it improves using xg mobile and a controller.
@@jigglyjuice7907I think he ment with the ally 700$
@@youngjustin82 yeah HahHa between the ally and the xg mobile it was about 1500 with taxes.
So for 1500 dollars you get a great handheld and docked experience…
I travel a lot so it’s better than having a beefy laptop to carry around. Also performance is actually great!
Loving this set up
I understand some people can play games at 720 but im not living in the past and i want to enjoy games as they are umproving with time and technology that means being able to experience the graphics at minimum at 1080p so for them to not really improve it even further and then ask for 699 thats crazy at least add 1tb
Do we really need 1080p/4k on such a small screen? If we used Pixel per degree to measure like VR does and correctly, I highly doubt it would be that noticeable which is the reason 8k has no difference from 4k on TVs, you'd have to go up to 200" to notice that which at normal viewing distances would not be feasible to have that big of a screen.
That being said, the render resolution does make a difference in AA even in small devices. And that's where I think most people are noticing differences, it's not the resolution of the screen itself, it's how clean the render actually looks.
Please add captions , i can’t clearly understand 😢
Cyberpunk looks better than the trailer😂😂😂
Imagine paying $2700-$2800 plus tax to get a game doing 1080p at 67 fps. Yeah I’ll keep my money.
$2000.00 for an external GPU 😮
At the beginning of this journey.
This is neanderthal rock 🪨 and sticks modularity compared to what is coming.
Rog Ally
A mobile rtx 4090 has performance similiar to a desktop 4070ti......
more like a 4080, right?
@@justmeandtom2072
Not too far off
XG Mobile 4090 does not run at full 150 TGP and shouldn't be compared to a laptop. Both BIOS 317 and 319 restrict the TGP to 115W when connected to the Ally. Myself and others have videos showing this.
That's good info to know but shouldn't the comparison be made still? Cause the question being can I get comparable performance is still answered. Whether it's weaker power or not I think knowing what it's capable of doing is the question at least I wanted to know.
@@Markus1229 No. This is an irresponsible comparison. He should have shown and disclosed the wattage(this is basic youtube practice). The SCAR G17 has a 175W TGP 4090 and its 7945HX is a 130W APU. Comparing it to the BIOS nerfed 115W TGP of the XG Mobile along with the Z1's 30W APU should not have been done. 7945HX will have a gigantic fps advantage in CPU limited games like Warzone 2.0 even if these 4090's were run at the same TGP.
A bad review like this should be called out. It's the same as testing one laptop in Silent mode and the other Turbo and wondering why the Silent mode laptop was slower. Or testing Max-Q GPU's versus Max-P's.
Plus the Ally 4090 combo is $800 cheaper than the SCAR G17.
@Mike5GSR okay I was with you sort of til that last part. I'm not saying your wrong just trying to understand fully. The last part comparing a silent to turbo mode is setting changeable things. Where as a max q vs the other is hardware differences right? So are you saying physically they don't compare or he didn't modify the settings to make it a fair comparison?
@@Markus1229 Both. The XG Mobile and the SCAR are different RTX 4090's. The SCAR is a faster 175W variant which is commonly used in top tier laptops.
I am saying this review put no effort into verifying the wattage these GPU's were running at, but irresponsibly compared them as if they're running at the same speed.
Portable PC gaming. Why ?
Same price you can have better gaming laptop...
Better spend money on ps5
great!
