According to the internet there are about 590,000 welders of all kinds in the USA , about 290,000 are pipe welders of one kind or another. Plants, shutdowns, offshore , maintenance etc. Pipeline work is probably one of the smallest categories. It is a highly specialized ,one of kind type trade. Most welding schools teach a tig and stick welding combo mix. Nothing specific to pipelining unless you are able to get an apprenticeship in UA local # 798 in Tulsa Oklahoma. That leaves hiring out as a welders helper for a pipeline contractor or oilfield contractor where they use do downhill pipe welding. You will have a welder to watch and ask questions and learn the trade from. You will be getting paid, instead of paying someone. start off by saving some money and buying a truck suitable to make a real rig out of. Next find a good welding machine . Once you have the truck and machine, you can get some pipe and practice what your learning on your days off etc. if you make a good helper and get better at your welding some contractor will be inclined to let take your first test. If you pass it, they will put you on the easier work to get you going?? If you have already broke out welding in the oilfields doing downhill welding on fabrication, you need to get some 12” .375 pipe / 12” .500 pipe and practice for speed and quality. Once you think you’re doing pretty good, go and apply with all the pipeline companies you can find. For welding or helping jobs right now, go online and do a google search for Pipeline welding contractors, Pipeline construction companies, Oilfield construction, Pipe fabrication companies etc. Google search in your local area or try these.
