Trailer for Häxan (1922) dir. Benjamin Christensen. I made this trailer for a local film festival many years ago. (I am sorry for those bad titles I at the end)
13 years late but I love how closely they resemble the demonic designs you would see drawn from books of the era, like Lesser Key of Solomon or something like that. Very cool
This movie is great and ahead of its time in special effects, but one of its more important qualities is the message about justice, comprehension and denial of superstition. They should show it to children at school. They might have a nightmare or two, but they would learn a lot about their ancestors mistakes and wrong beliefs. Truly a masterpiece.
i love this film, don't get me wrong, but this trailer makes the film seem a lot more exciting than it truly is .... it is still and forever will be a groundbreaking horror masterpiece/achievment.
Nine (!) years later, but yeah I agree. The trailer looked more horror-y, and the movie was more a documentary with silent scenes. Would've also loved a movie with just horror and sound, less documentary. But, I still liked Häxan. Very different from what I usually watch.
Fascinating stuff. These things always deal in superstitious fears, but with the costumes, special effects, and urge to shock, I WILL be watching the full movie.
Haha definitely not homemade. This was a Swedish silent film that was made by a Swedish production company called Svensk Filmindustri and the screenplay was written by the same man who directed it , Benjamin Christensen .The film was part documentary and part theatrical. It cost over 2 million Swedish kroner to make. Also you have to remember that this film was made in the early 1920’s and is over 100 years old. And for it being over 100 years the technology used for stunts and special effects were far beyond its time. And we still use and embellish techniques that they used for this film to make modern movies. This movie is a master class of film. When I was in film school we spent half a semester dissecting and delving into this one movie alone! There’s a reason why it has a 91 on Rotten Tomatoes. I beseech you to delve deeper into this. You won’t regret it.
hey, i went to turner classic movies the other morning and this was on but not on the guide. got sucked in and this was disturbing x10. took a bit to uncover what this is and with the costumers and effects crew being about a century ahead their time, this was a complete mind f**k....
from 192️⃣2️⃣ to 202️⃣2️⃣! hej everyone! trailer difficile da dimenticare!? se penso che, come spiegato su wikipedia in questo momento, "censors in countries such as Germany, France, and the United States", sinceramente mi viene da ridere a pensare alla forte differenza culturale che esisteva tra Scandinavia e U.S.ofA.
Wow, from what I can tell from this video, they cut so much from the 60's version... which I watched. Maybe I don't remember it well enough, but it looks like a ton of footage was cut
This was just supposed to be a “trailer” so obviously it’s not going to show everything and there was no 60s version there is just this version from the 20s.
I didn't really liked it. I don't mean to be a troll, I just though it was kinda boring. The information on witchcraft was very interesting. However it was presented very slowly. Great work into putting the video toghether, it makes a great trailer.
Wow, never heard of this film. Looks like a huge visual accomplishment for 1922! ......also, from the looks of it, I'll bet it was a hated and offensive film. I tend to expect morality was a lot more important to people in 1922 than it is in 2012..... where society is deteriorating of course. I'd definitely watch this film if I were the old me.
No, it's basically a Danish movie - the actors, director, cinematographer (majority of the staff/cast) were all Danes - the entire crew. The money came Sweden, thats all.
The production company and distribution company were both Swedish. And the director/screenwriter Benjamin Christensen chose those companies himself so that he could have complete artistic control of the film and he wanted it to be released first in Sweden. And he ultimately wanted it to be a Swedish movie and not a danish one because he knew that it would be censored.
This was a 100 years old and it looks more creepy and disturbing than a lot of the cliche horror films from today
What do you mean? This is one of the creepiest movies made. Nothing today can hold a candle to it.
@@hippydippy That's what he's saying. Can you read?
Some of the devils and demons in this look amazingly well done for the early 1920s
13 years late but I love how closely they resemble the demonic designs you would see drawn from books of the era, like Lesser Key of Solomon or something like that. Very cool
God, this is the ultimate nightmare generating movie
No word can describe what I felt when I watched this movie for the first time...
Older horror movies were hauntingly wicked in their presentation!
😱

Couldn't have said it better.
I don't think children are ready to watch this. 😅
I m 24 years old and I was not ready to watch it 😂
It was awesome but I wish I could experience this movie in a cinema, not on my TV screen
Yeah they shouldn’t show this to kids
i love this film, don't get me wrong, but this trailer makes the film seem a lot more exciting than it truly is .... it is still and forever will be a groundbreaking horror masterpiece/achievment.

I can't believe this is from the early 20's... It looks too extreme to be from the 60's let alone the 20's :O
Pre haze code
@@whatinthefudge5346 um it's not an american movie
@jeanivanjohnson sorry I'm a film historian from the academy here in LA the haze code set the tone for film around the world
Amazing for it's time. Wow, Even though todays special effects are amazing. This film is out of this world. Freaking scary!!
So....should I watch it then 🤔
The trailer alone is better than anything Eli Roth has ever made.
ha thanks! 😅
This is brilliantly edited! If I ever need to show this movie off to friends, this is what I'll show 'em.
Thank you!! It was taken by some trailer page as the official trailer lol
Fascinating stuff. These things always deal in superstitious fears, but with the costumes, special effects, and urge to shock, I WILL be watching the full movie.
Homemade? Wow. Great job! This is one of my all-time favorite silent films. The Criterion Collection DVD is so very much worth the price.

That baby in the beginning of the trailer. Is dead. That's how old this movie is. The youngest cast member of that film, has long probably since died.
The devil in this movie was the Director who would direct the movie in the make up which makes this movie even more badass
For it's time it was very well done and very epic!...
Obsessed. This is so beautiful I couldn’t even describe my visions of hell, demons, Satan or witchcraft any clearer. It’s so moving.
Bitch you need a shower that’s all
Hahahaha....But you're gonna be there honey!!!!!!
When i first saw this and when Danse macabre started it was the biggest jumpscare 😭
The music that accompanies the film is very good!
Yes, it is! Saint-Saens: Dance macabre
it also synced up real well with dark side of the moon......
Absolutely fascinating.
I only just now heard about this film. I MUST SEE THIS
This trailer looks oddly hilarious
Como puede haber gente tan inculta, a las cuales no les guste esta Obra de Arte..
Great work
This would be an interesting watch.
The short piece of music in the very end is taken from Symphony No. 8 by Franz Schubert.

the music is Danse Macabre, by Franz Liszt
It is by Saint Saens.

is there an Eureka (masters of cinema) dvd for this film?
There's a Criterion BluRay for it nowadays.
The soundtrack sounds like "Simple Symphony of Benjamin Britten...."
