It’s because you know you’re gonna get something crazy, for better or for worse. And you can’t ever forget that he did The Sixth Sense, so there’s always hope that he will make another masterpiece.
@Prince Smith all good. I don't think he's knocking it. It's just...the sixth sense is a movie for cinema history. The rest of the movies are just movies that we enjoy.

@Prince Smith again, I'm not saying they aren't. I loved both of them. I'm just saying that objectively, sixth sense was really something else when it came out. And before we knew who M.Knight really was all about. There's a reason why sixth sense is on all cinema lists as one of the greatest movies.

Shyamalan has been the only person I've seen in these interviews who has answered the "where is x person right now" in an existential way and honestly it seems quite fitting for him.
Everybody else just answers with "I'm in studio shooting this interview". Which is so dumb and annoying

I had the privilege of speaking in the same creativity session as M. Night at Adobe MAX 2019. Met him and his family backstage. He truly is the kindest, most down-to-earth public figure I've ever met, and he deserves his illustrious success!
This will seem like I'm throwing shade at him, but I promise I am not. What I was going to say is that his nice guy reputation must be working in Hollywood, because his movies are hit and miss, yet he's able to keep working consistently.

I would add that he's a real creative trying to forge his own path--not a remake or an adaptation (sometimes he does those), but he has a voice that is his. That's great too.

I think it was very groundbreaking for super hero stories but too subtle for that time... I really loved it.

Unbreakable is his best movie. Not sure about the movies that follow. I feel like I saw the second one and it wasn't good. I love Unbreakable and wish it ended there. Reminds me of Joker, same type of dark, quietness about it. Unbreakable really was way before its time.

One of the few best WIRED interviews ever. The best most patient well answered non-sarcastic passionate WIRED interviews are few and far between. And this is one of them. He took his time, he answered everything sometimes in details and I loved it. And apparently I've watched a lot more of his works than I thought I did.

I don't know why people hate some of his movies, but every film he ever made was so rich in story and narration. He's both genius and the coolest director I've ever known.
We were in a really strong period for films in general back then. I think people appreciate him more these days.
The only movie of his that I genuinely dislike was his Last Airbender adaptation. Even then, with the bad writing and bad acting, the primary flaw was simply that it’s not a story meant to be told in a feature length film.
except avatar. he has his very own style of storytelling and I love his stuff for it, but Avatar was just unquestionably bad imo.

@Mr E For me I like Wide Awake, Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, Village, Split, Glass. Lady in the Water and the Visit are average but the rest of his films he directed are bad (I haven’t seen OLD yet).
The shocking twist at the end made me re-think everything I just watched.
The “what does Jim say” one referenced that cold open where Michael thought he saw Johnny Depp and when he realized he didn’t, he was like, “that explains why the name on his mailbox is M. Shulman.” Then Jim said “M. Night Shulman?”
He’s made movies I love and hate. I always applaud him as a director willing to take chances. He also personally funded his last 4 movies on his own as well
The way he talked about it may have seemed silly, but I love his respect for not spoiling movies. A lot of other people would go ahead and spoil something if it's more than a year old.

Ehhh, more ok imo, highs and lows for sure, I would know as an Avatar fan deeply scarred back in 2010.
He seems like a great guy, I don't liked all of his movies but I'm just happy that his Eastrail 177 Trilogy exists, it's really different than any superhero movies we've ever seen. I love that trilogy, really underrated in my opinion
One of the most creative writer/director/storytellers we have. He’s always trying to do something original and that alone warrants kudos. I appreciate his love of film and his passion for the craft of storytelling. One of my favorite directors of all time.
I just realized that was the guy who ran over Mel Gibsons’s wife in Signs.
I love this man. He's always so kind and well spoken. And you can tell he's pretty self-aware 🤣. Some of his movies may not be the best, but he 100% has some absolute MASTERPIECES. Signs changed my life. It's the reason I'm into aliens, the reason I'm working in film/TV. And I'd say it was a game changer for sci-fi

Shyamalan just does his own thing. One of the few original concept directors in Hollywood.
He tried wading into studio franchise system but got burnt with Avatar and After Earth.
Nevertheless, the mastery of his works like Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs etc have cemented his legacy.
