Mercedes Benz fan keeps running sounds like an airplane - how to diagnose

  • 06-07 Mercedes-Benz have faulty ecm’s. The other reason a fan will run is lack or communication through the CAN data bus.
    06-07 E C CLK ML GL R SL have bad ECM’s!!
    Hello fellow Mercedes-Benz friends. In this video I show you how diagnosis can lie to you and confuse you and how to always VERIFY the fault before repairing anything or buying parts.
    I deal with this issue all the time and 99% of the time the engine modules are faulty. But it is no fun to make a video telling you that. So instead I showed how the diagnosis should have went down. Now what I did on my own meathead time was try and save the customer some money by swapping EEPROMS. I am NOT an electrical engineer , I am NOT good with small circuit board repairs and you will see haha.
    I was lucky enough to swap the EEPROM from the customers ECM to a used ECM and then to another used ECM and back to the original ECM and it still worked!!!!
    In the end it was more cost effective to find a used ecm, send both out to a mobile mechanic with the software to swap Drive Authorization Data and VINs in the modules and plug and play.
    I did try Mercedesecm.com and they jacked me around for 1 month. Luckily they refunded the 800 they charged me for a "reconditioned"ecm that never came or was sent.

    Funny, I'm a professional musician working on my c207 & my sister's w203 & its always awesome seeing professional mechanics, etc playing their own music in their vids!
    Also, never knew about early m272's having bad ECM's. That's slightly terrifying hahaha....I just had a 0521 paired w/ a hard cold start & same fan nonsense. Coolant temp sensor read a fault also & had one on hand so fingers crossed. My bank1 tumble flap sensor is undercurrent, so also praying I can just swap that before I check the front of the dreaded intake manifold for you know what.
    Thanks for what you do!

    That's what I want to specialize in - diagnostics, module troubleshooting and repair...after finding a faulty module. I watched one guy do it. He had some really specialized test equipment, like an electronic engine simulator in addition to a signal generator, oscilloscope, DVN and even a Microscope. Yeah...I love that kind of stuff.

    I am having the same issue with my car. It started a year ago. At that time, I disconnected the battery and took to a shop. No issues until yesterday. I dis connected the battery overnight and this morning the fan turned on full speed. The car was cold and off. It hasn’t happened again. I need to get fixed. Your video was on point. Another fix we have performed for fan run or no run. Installed a new circuit to control radiator cooling fan, thru the use of a manual switch in driver's dashboard. The customer has to turn on during operating of a/c, and city traffic. Saved the customer $$$. My favorite Mercedes-Benz, 126 chassis 300 SD turbo diesel, easy to diagnose and repair, all kinds of engines room, and built like tanks!

    Master tech lou, thank you sir for this video. I have the same MB scan tool. By just watching this video and how you showed how to view sensor data for the AC controller (indoor temp at 142 degree on mine), I was able to determine that the issue on my ac compressor and condenser fans not activating, was due to the ac controller switch panel inside the truck. I bought a use one off ebay, swapped them out, and "boom" everything works perfect. The next thing to tackle is to swap out the overhead sunroof switch panel, which also has a indoor temp sensor. Thank you sir

    This was happening on a c class estate I recently bought I watched a few you tube videos and decided to start cheap and work up firstly I noticed the battery was brand new but looked very small and on looking closer found the battery had smaller CCA and lower ah than what was supposed to be on the car so luckily I had just bought a new battery for my s class which was obviously bigger CCA and ah I joined the positive and negative together in the boot and left overnight fitted the s class battery started the car with fingers crossed and no more fan on continuous from cold and no fan over run I have found over the years of Mercedes ownership if there is the slightest drop in battery voltage or performance it starts to play havoc with the electrical systems on the car hope this helps ps it won't solve everyone's problem but it solved mine

    Can you re-authorize those 2007 and up ECUs with SDS or does it have to be a virgin unit? Another reason why swapping the EEPROM didn't work is because it looks like the donor ECU was not identical. I have found when doing work like this, if the ECU was made by a different subcontractor or even just a different year, the other chips on the module can be different and it doesn't know how to communicate with them. I always try to get the exact same part number and versioning.

      the front sam does not actuate the fan only the engine module on your model. basically with the scan tool you need to see if the engine module shows 0% activation, if the fan is on then the engine module is bad.

    See I knew you were cool, a fellow guitarist. I don't have that exact issue, but on really hot days when starting the car up the fan sounded like that. I assumed it did that because the A/C was on trying to cool the interior quickly, it would be like 120 degrees inside the car when started. Since it's cooled off outside, I don't hear it loud like that anymore. Also, I kinda want a small scan tool to put in my "go" tool bag I carry for trips out of town, is that iCarsoft a decent "just in case" tool?

      Honestly with a scanner and monitoring the ac pressures and temp sensor for the engine and checking to see who is asking for the fan activation, engine module or ac module, this sounds like a super easy diagnosis.

  • @Dnasty1
    @Dnasty1 Před rokem +1

    That is crazy you had to do all that for a fan noise... seems like a poor design issue. Mine sounds loud like this on my 2010 e550 but only when I start the car with the ac on. If I start the car with it off the fan doesn't crank up like this. When the fan runs loud it won't shut off until I turn the car off. It is currently 100+ degrees out here so i'm wondering if the fan running like this is normal or if I have some issue? Also that is one clean engine bay.

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  Před rokem

      Fan will run with ac on, to cool ac, depends on pressures of ac system and outside temps. if its 100+ then I can assume its normal operation.

    why on earth Mercedes did not use a fan relay as an ultimate safety switch after engine is powered down , this relay would ensure battery does not get drained unnecessarily, with my knowledge of electronics i can tell you that integrated control fans have power transistors that can fail and continue to run the fan as it has permanent battery feed, so a relay would have cut all power to it unless the ignition was on when the fan would come on even if not needed, in an emergency you would still be able to use your car, why i am here is because a friends 230 Merc has fan coming on at Full Speed almost so frightening standing near it as blades could fly off it and hurt someone, I diagnosed issues with its engine control module that is sending permanent 12v into the control wire the green wire I believe is earth, brown and green wire is where the signal appears, the fan was tested ok, so if you do not connect control terminals and only apply ground and power to fan's big terminals it does not run, so fault is in control unit which should send pulse width modulation control signal to run fan and at appropriate speed depending on how hot the engine is and how much cooling it requires.

    IMHO if the ECU doesnt send a signal to the Fan to run it fast , its not the ECU, its the Fan control module/motor thats faulty , only if the ECU is erroneously requesting the Fan to turn on even when the air is not on and its not hot because you just started the car , then it cant be the ECU it has to get erroneous request fromt the ECU for it to be the ECU problem , other wise your throwing your money away on a new ECU when its the Fan control module ie motor on the Fan , is my laymans answer based on watching a bunch of too fast fan videos
