What a character introduction! One beer and Mr. Matsunaga launches into a history lesson of Fukushima, tells his life story, and almost has a nervous breakdown, all in 2 minutes! With plenty of time to spare for a quick appearance by the Shogi Cats! 🐱 😅
(Plus a quick product placement commercial.)
And Kyoko is still a manipulative creep. 😮
    Lots to process …
I can’t wait till the next episode! 😊

Yes! So much happened in this episode that feels quite insignificant, and yet what a barrage!

The contribution to the story here is Rei finally having a look at how other people treat and think of shogi. It comes off as if Rei has spent most of his time playing shogi until now solely thinking of it as a way for him to keep above float whether it was to stay with his "adoptive" family or to get away from them by earning money by becoming a young professional asap. Because of this, Rei has essentially never "stopped to smell the roses" and figure out why other people put themselves through a struggle of wins and losses. Remembering that this is a field his father would've loved to be in had he not needed to be a doctor and having Kyouko taunt him about his opponent's situation helped open Rei's mind to how shogi can be something more than his life vest. This episode is him finally trying to look at someone else to figure out what that alternative can be for himself.
