- Honda’s original Z50 “Monkey Bike” debuted in 1968, and tens of thousands of people learned to ride on them. Kids loved the Z50 (and the Z50R, XR50, and CRF50 it evolved into), but so did adults. Now the Monkey is back in 125cc form and it's coming to the United States. Based on the Grom, this bike is sure to be a hit.

I'm getting one (meaning in two years, I will find a used one with 543 miles on it for $1900)
Ichiban Moto LOL, you described every Grom currently on Craigslist. BTW, glad to see you putting out new videos again.
000
go for a ride in 2020?
Aaron Fink What state is this? Here in New York they are priced around 3000$ on Craigslist used.
In 4 years I’ll buy it from you for 1200
Childhood memories. When the mini trail 50 came out, my dad bought one for my brothers and I. We learned how to ride because of the trail 50.
Yes sir... I prefer the hard tail z50s. ride one every day on my acreage. I'll add this little Booger to the arsenal.
I love you guys and all your killer reviews! Keep 'em coming! Can't get enough of your vids!
The attention to detail in making of this little toy amaze me
We love this little bike. It really does remind us of the little motorcycles we rode on merry-go-rounds as children. Great overview, thanks.
That kinda looks like the little Honda 50 with 2 speed automatic that I first learned to ride on many decades ago. Thanks it made me smile. :)
I test rode a Grom recently and loved it. However when I saw this on the Honda website I went with the heart over my head. Put a deposit down and she comes in July! In Australia it was an extra $1500... Build quality is supposed to be a significant step up though.
Jimmy W cool! I own a ruckus and I only get to use it twice a month at most is kind of slow at 49cc. I was thinking of getting a Grom but I would rather get this.
Love it! Thought it was a great concept when it was first teased, and the final product totally lives up to it, capturing the usability and modern feel of the Grom with the classic look of the old 50s. Wish I was in a position to be buying a bike like this really
Also for everyone getting your knickers in a twist over the price, a 2018 Grom is over $4 equivalent here in the UK, and that's made of plastic. Take a look at the real world
Back in the late 60.'s my dad bought me one of these for my birthday. Back then it was called the Mini trail 50, it had a 3 speed Auto clutch and was the talk of the neighborhood
Oh yes, then on to the Trail 70, after that I got a XR-75 and never looked back.
But those little trail bikes were the beginners choice and seemed indestructible.
Yea good times. Now try to find some trails to ride in the afternoon without the police writing multipole tickets and taking the bike.
Donald Grant We used to arm ourselves with Daisy bb guns and nobody would care either.
luv we didn't go into schools and shoot up the place ether. The males all seem along these days.
The Trail 5o has spawned countless clones and is probably the most iconic mini-bike in history. The style was sold in India, Pakistan and China for decades as reliable transportation of the working class and immigrants alike....much like a Toyota Corolla is around the world, today.
Sales to youth, were a fraction of what they were sold to adults in the US.
In the US, unless you were well off, kids got JC Penney and Montgomery Wards mini-bikes. Adults, seniors and retirees got Trail 50's and Trail 90's.
Man this reminded me of my first bike I learned to ride on, back in the day when I was 9yrs old...It was a 1969 z50... I loved that bike
Just purchased a Monkey in red non-ABS.
So cool and a blast to ride......those that balk at the price, it is what it is.
Either buy one or don't......but I can tell you they are a blast to ride and I'm so glad Honda is building retro bikes like this.
Well worth the $$ to me.
Talk about bringing back childhood memories! My Dad brought us home a red Honda Monkey 50 from Japan back in 1971. He loaded it onto a USAF C-141 disassembled in all of his duffle bags (He was the Loadmaster). The following year he brought home the DAX, known as the Trail 70 here in the states. Not sure if I'll buy one of the new ones at that crazy price tag, since it will be a toy. But will be watching the used market in a couple of years as well.
OH MY GOSH WHEN I WAS A KID, I LUSTED SO MUCH AFTER THE 1970's HONDA MINI BIKE.... Never got one, could not afford it brings back memories
I started on a Honda QA50 in 1971, it was bought brand new!! Rode that bike for 10+ years.
Looking forward to episodes of Monkeykhana! Such a silly, wonderful, ridiculous, awesome motorcycle! I hope Monkey MCs start up and hold massive rallys.
I used to ride the little Honda 50 back in the day, it was lots of fun.
like it alot. I'd still probably go for a grom, preferably the first gen version, but i'm glad honda is bringing this to N.A., it will sell many i'm sure!
I had the trail 70 mini bikes when I was a kid wish I still had those bikes but I do have my fathers 1968 trail 90 in mint condition. It cool to see modern renditions of old bikes.
This is gonna be so cool! Thanks for the First Look!
People said the Grom was overpriced when it came out, but that didn't stop it from selling like light bars at a lifted truck meet. Anyone complaining about the price probably won't buy one anyway.
Lots of left over 2018 Groms at dealerships right now. Check Ebay.
I'd buy a used one off of kijiji.
4k seems pretty reasonable to me. Also Ari, looking vascular man haha
great choice of pocket knife Ari! I carry the same Kershaw 1776 in Grey!
That’s awesome - I want one. So much better than an actual vintage.
Digging it for sure. Will be on the lookout for gently used versions that are being sold off the back of RVs in a few years.
I love my HONDA MB5! It is the most fun i've ever had, on any bike i've owned over the decades, both large and small. The MB5 was a 2-stroke, 5-speed, 7.1 HP, 50cc screamer, with a cool little powerband, and a top speed of 53 MPH. Looks like a mini Ducati... a work of art. I get tons more looks and comments than my Honda Monkey 125, even though I love this Monkey bike too. The 2 stroke engine sound is awesome on the MB5! Cost $599 brand new back in 1982, the only year the MB5 was exported to the U.S.
This thing will be worth money as the years go by though, look at all the people restoring all the old z50s,they’re awesome
I grew up riding a trail 50 this brings me back to some of my best memories. But $4k is way too much
Have almost no experience riding. Had a 650 dirt bike 14 years ago but only had for a month. Ive owned this bike for 1.5 days and i bet i could already pass the skills test for my license. I am surprised how easy this little bike is to ride. Been practicing my maneuvering, fast starts and stops, swerving, etc in a nearby empty parking lot.
One of the most beautiful bikes ive seen lately
Cool. Looking forward to some Monkeykhana!
I still own my 1968 Honda Mini Trail in Yellow. This was the first year this model came out. I got my bike when I was 12. It still run great. I just rebuilt the carburetor. My model came with no headlight with white grips.
I miss that old wing logo from honda. I loved those on the 1960's I learned on as a kid.
Absolutely buying one. It'll look good next to my 2014 grom
OMG OMG I had a 1976 Z50 in yellow, it was already old and worn out when I got it, but I loved it anyway. The only thing this one is missing to be a grown-up version of it is the little luggage rack behind the seat over the tail light.
Gorgeous and worth every penny.
I expect this video to get a million views. I see the price tag is turning a lot of people off. I think it is over priced too, but since no one wants to pay that amount, I guess I don’t have to worry about it being hard to find at a dealership.
My dad used to ride one of these when I was a kid. The Honda Chally and the Honda Chappy.
wow, people have wanted this for a long time. hopefully there will be a run and alot on the used market
Reminds me of my old mini trail 50 from 40 years ago. 4 grand sounds steep but you could ride it around forever.
Just picked up my yellow monkey, as advertised, great bike, great purchase
$3700 private party sale, 290 miles
In my opinion The 80’s Z50’s are still the coolest looking 50’s produced. I have 2 I restored. 84 and 87. Cool Lil Bikes.
I have never clicked on a video so fast in my life.
Reminds me of what my Brother & I built in the basement with an old lawn-mower engine...
FUN to ride around in our big backyard, and some trails into the woods, or even down the road a short way to the convenience store.
Of course, this one is MUCH better 'engineered' and well-finished... And I think it looks GREAT!
...but just NOT a $4,000 vehicle for my budget...
I had a Q 50 when I was a kid, looked just like that. 👍
It's like a hipster grom... I love it.
So stoked!!!
Sweet getting to be at the reveal in townsend with Ari and Spenser!
So it will be available in the states? But with that price I might have to wait a few more years and get a used one.
Hmm, very interesting . I really like it . I'm ordering a red one as soon as they're available to order .
$4k? Yeah I don’t think so lol
4k more and you can get you ass scared by a MT09...
Skyerzen 4k more you can get a supersport 600 and 4k more you can get a litre bike and 4k more you can get a full size adv bike. See Everyone can play that 4k more game now
I think you missed the point. I was commenting on how cheap the MT09 is for it's displacement. I was about to ride when I typed that, I don't think it was a fully developed thought.
6K in Aus. Grom is 3500 could get a KTM 390 for that.
Yeah, I was a bit surprised about the 6K. It looks great but I wonder how soon you'd get sick of it. Might be some good value second hand ones in a couple of years.
Yes, a better looking Grom !! It's beautiful
The styling of this bike is beautiful would be cool to see this in a full bigsize version with a 300 motor.
Nice second hand toy for me to get next summer at half the price, looking forward to this one
Its over twice as big as the original. Most of us that learned on those are closer to ten times bigger than we were then! I miss the knobs for the fold down handlebars.
That's a cool bike.
Never know I might get one.
when i heard that thing start up, in my head i said "aww"
Not really in the market for this bike but I think it’s awesome that Honda made the monkey modern.
I need a video on how it rides and handles. Big fan of the groom, but might get this if it goes the same speed.
Super cool. I dont need 1. But id like 1. Reminds me of the z50 and SL70 i had as a kid
That bikes bad ass, but I’m going to get the super cub when it comes out instead. I also heard that they may make it electric. I’m pretty excited for this.
I love it, I so want one!
You Guys Are Amazing. But I Have A Question Which I am asking frequently that make a video on difference between petal disc vs normal dics. Please could you guys make a video on this topic.#Great fan of motorcyclist magazine.
I had one as a kid I think I'll get another to ride around the farm
I had a Z50R. When these hit the used market... oh man
They should have taken a grom frame, thrown in a crf125 engine, cheaper non halogen lights, and sold it for $2,500. They would sell like hot cakes.
Perfect for the back of my motor home! Spare some change for a motor home?
I should probably get one just to go along with my restored 69' AK1...
The Suzuki Van Van 200 Is A Way better Deal As A Throwback Bike For The Price Of That Honda. I Bought One Brand New Recently And It's The Funniest Ride I've Ever Owned. Very Stable And Solid.
You should do some workout videos. How do you get your arms to look like that????
It's called protein and weightlifting, and having a job that doesn't drain you physically or mentally.
Are forks firmer than the Grom's forks?
Camparable to the Z125 forks?
Looking forward to about 2020 when they have been out on the market for a bit and I can find a used bike, because even though the $4k asking price is a bit too much, I have been dreaming (and drooling over) about this bike for about 1 year since the first articles exposed Honda's new model.
This is awesome!!!! Way way cooler than the grom
The want is strong. I’ll admit, would be much more interested at more like the $3k mark. And ABS on a Monkey bike is, well, a pointless waste of money. At least it’s optional so the buyer can save their $200 to put toward a smaller and lighter pipe.
Overall, super cool, really want one, $4k is a bit steep. Looking forward to the full review!
Does this mean us guys who have orig z50s value will go up?
Cool minibike but its still almost a $5K Grom by the time you leave the dealership?
WHAT is that Big Black Box under the fuel tank?
{ I sure wish they'd do a CT70 (Trail 70) reboot with
4 or 5 forward gears and manual clutch!!! }
That is WAY bigger than the original, If I would have known how valuable these would have been I would have bought a dozen and there them in a storage locker 30 years ago!
Wow thats awesome!
I wish they would remake the honda motocompo, small folding scooter- amazing engineering.
Hmmm the groms got that single mono rear spring ... so this is probably heavier than a grom si ? Is it meant to be more of a trail rated thing or about the same as the grom... For the $500 savings you might as well go for the grom unless your just want that retro thing going on... Or are they jacking up the price on the Grom too ?
I wish I were at the Smoky Mountain Crawl so that I could have seen this thing. It looks awesome! That airbox though! Holy crap that needs to be deleted! This thing is going to be SO awesome with a Dinger Built intake, a sweet, lower profile, high clearance, thoaty exhaust, some pro taper bars, and maxxis 6024s! So legit! Lets get some round number plates for the sides too!
Have you guys looked into the new CB300R?? Seems like it will be a great bike that's affordable, good looking, and an engine that would be great for beginner to intermediate riders. I think there is a huge market for this price point and class of bike. I would love to hear yall's take on this somewhat new platform.
@ 1:34 - That low clearance pipe could be a problem if the bike is ridden hard in the dirt or the street....
So cute!
Any chance for you to measure the eye to eye dimension of the rear shocks?
cant wait to see you guys riding it like if you stole it!
So cool! I think it’s a mistake to go to higher performance tire though. The marshmallow tires were definitely that bikes charm imo.
Dude you got nice vascularity. What's your BF% ?
Didnt know you were down in Tennessee for the reveal. Wouldve said whats up
A little pricey, but there's no getting past it's cool factor, love it!
I love it! 😍 But 4K!? Hell no!
Really pretty bike
Wow, just wow.
Do you know when these will hit US shores? my dealer said that he wouldn't get one until November or December 2019. I want to try and find an early VIN
The blinking in the dash as if it's saying *Ride Me, Senpai*
Soo cool!
Love it!
Do they have a 50cc and how much is it/where can I buy one??? And another question... I'm about 5'2 - 5'3... will I be able to reach the ground...or at least reach it???
Very cool. Will last 40 years too.
Now this is something that hits home with me waaaay more than the grom, which looks like it's trying a bit too much to look grown up.
