    The problem is that they didn't prepare an opportunity to check the style of action beforehand and have a consensus. The staff said, "He tells us a new goal at the shooting site." And he doesn't give any specific order. The action director's argument is basically correct. The actors' moves look planned because they're planned. If Anno wanted to solve it cinematically, he could have done it in many other ways. We shouldn't regard it as a problem of auteurism. It's basically a lack of preparation.

    • @ayakuweb
      @ayakuweb  Před rokem +32

      Right. I'm assuming there was multiple pre-visuals made for every action scene so it's a major headache to have to recreate something/add/change things that an action team was rehearsing for months.

      I think the real problem with Anno (which is also maybe his defining trait as a director?) as a director is that he LOVES to plan extensively during pre-production, but then just decides to improvise everything during actual production. It's the reason why NGE is the way it is. It's why the Rebuilds are the way they are. It's why Love and Pop is so untethered from traditional film form. It's why Shin Godzilla, which he only co-directed, is his smoothest production.
      So I don't think the problem is a lack of preparation because I'm sure that pre-production was filled with that. The problem is that Anno, at least logistically, is really just not the right kind of director you want to handle a stunt-heavy film. You need a director that sticks to the plan, not someone who treats filmmaking like jazz. You can have Anno as a creative consultant or a writer (like in Shin Ultraman), but not the one in charge of everything because he's a mess. He's a genius, but a mess.

    I think there are many artists guilty of getting lost in their persude of perfection. Stanley Kubrick was also very difficult. Another thing is, communication what's in your head is sometimes difficult, even more if you don't know yourself. But his results are out of question. This movie is amazing.

    Having finally gotten to see it... I can respect what Anno tried to do and convey, however, being that deeply reverent of the old school feel and style was also detrimental at times. You can get a raw chaotic feeling without going nuts on your edits (seriously, the editing, holy hell - in some fights it's great but in others it's insane), the entire point of good action choreography and trust in your action team is entirely that - that's how we have John Wick. Loving and respecting the old school is cool and it's great, but you can also temper it with modern techniques and film language.
    Look, all that said, I still enjoyed the hell out of this movie and am looking forward to the home release (whenever that happens); but as a paying audience member - gotta be honest about these things..

      I actually really enjoyed the editing in this movie. It's how Anno always edited his work (would argue that Evangelion and Cutie Honey's editing are way more manic than the one in Shin KR), and it's the kind of editing you also always see, not just in old school tokusatsu, but in Japanese late-night genre TV shows (like "Trick" and "Time Limit Detective"), Japanese splatterpunk, and in some V-cinema movies. It's a really harsh, heavy, in your face type of rapid editing, and it's really unconventional, mostly rooted in techniques from the Japanese New Wave era. Maybe I just consume too much artsy and geeky Japanese media, but I'm really in love with this exaggerated editing tradition.

  • @CyclingNeko
    @CyclingNeko Před 11 měsíci +14

    The biggest problem is how to covey what you want to the team in charge.
    Especially when you don't give any clue, example, or what is wrong and what is right from your POV.
    Your team has action director, he got his own way. If you want him to do your way, especially with something that completely different, then you should give him a lot information and reference.
    When you change your direction in the shooting site, then everything are already too late.
    If you really want to make sure the fighting sequence is meet with your demand, you should consult to your fighting direction first, see their training session, so you will have an idea on what should be done and what should be stop.

    Honestly, I understand that an Artist wants their vision of something to be perfect and come to life but to an extent when it comes to people helping you whether it’s some project in movie or any sort of art, human ethics is always involved for those people’s own safety when helping someone’s make their art come to life.
    If it comes down to the artist’s caring more about their vision than another person’s well being, then it isn’t worth it and that artist will be on their own
    One example is the director of The Shining movie and he mentally traumatized the main actress with so many takes that to him wasn’t really catching his vision, and it’s sad of the way she is now

    After seeing the first 20 minutes airing and seeing the BTS. I understand why those action scenes while choppy and full of unnecessary cuts, felt raw and real unlike many other action movies I've seen. Especially that first fight, without a word you can see how powerful and uncontrollable Hongo's power and violence when he punches those Shocker goons. It creates different emotions and also linked his fear of the Augment power after Kumo Aug fight.

He cares A LOT. And props to him for realizing what he said was wrong, and went out to correct it here. People complaining here have not been on many movie sets. This stuff happens frequently, we just don't see it because of corporate BS sugar coating the BTS to make everything look peachy. It rarely is. It's tough, it's demanding, and tempers flare. @@Scifogon Well, not every shoot for a movie is hard or difficult, but I get what you mean. I think it ultimately comes down to the director of the film. Some directors are very, very difficult to work with since, well, they care a whole lot about what they make and try to get it right. But that doesn’t mean EVERY Director is like that. It comes down to communication; if a director doesn’t PROPERLY communicate what they want to the crew, DP, actors, or stunt director then sure it’s going to look bad.
      Again, it really comes down to the Director. Now, most directors plan everything out through story boards and previs, and it’s clear not a whole lot of planning was down in pre-production on the action scenes. Anno clearly wanted audiences to not see actors or stunt men choreographing fight scenes, but look as if it was real… like they were fully into it. Like it was really happening. And it’s clear, at least to me, Anno didn’t know how to properly communicate that or even plan that stuff out pre-production. Again, it really just comes down to the director. They set the example to the crew on what they want and how they want it, and if they can’t properly do that then it’s going to be a rough shoot. Not every movie shoot is going to be hard, some might be a little more easier than you think.

They're all very detailed and demanded of what they want. But lets not be fooled by the documentary too much, its always 50/50 about the truth on set. Even Anno himself said during Shin Eva docu, "the moment documentary has been edited, its all fake". Anno was never a good director, never is and never will be. I actually found the action acceptable in the beginning, but as it goes the entire quality plummeted, with very bad framing, many close-up shots, shaking and poor entrance for new characters stepping into a specific scene. The introduction of KR No. 2 was anti climactic, a lot of things were anti climactic... Everything felt bland and served only to complete the homework with no passion, especially the tunnel PS2 graphics CGI crapfest battle.
    A lot of things could have been solved with more time and prep work, unfortunately that would mean bigger cost and budget for the studio.

    Let's be honest. That line komochi warui did end up being iconic. It is difficult for him to work with others. He has a vision of the world that is different from others. It is difficult to convey one though when one's view and value of the world is total different from everyone. I was like him when I was in art school. I gave up and took jobs that's not my passion thinking it will not hurt me as much if I don't care about the works that much. But it still ends up difficult. Slowly I learned how to blend in. My opinion doesn't matter although I know I'm right but if the think I'm wrong then I'm wrong. I don't want to end up like Galileo. Living a rather ok life now but I envy those that fight till the end.
    I do think Japan movie action choreography is one of the worst in the world. The only Japanese movie that has good action scenes are Fabel. Some of the modern one is kinda ok like rurouni kenshin but it feels like they are fighting with stick rather then sword.

    Auteurs are something of a double edged sword. On the one hand they are able to get their unique artistic vision out in an industry that often feels otherwise samey and homogenized. On the other hand they can also start to smell their own farts and end up thinking their vision has more artistic merit then actually has and start to believe every idea they have is a master piece. In that regard Anno is fairly tame and while likely difficult to work with on set, when he's off the clock he doesn't seem to have the kind of inflated ego many auteurs have.

      @@kiryuknightly9411 That was the same complaint I had when it came to some of the action sequences in Shin Ultraman, as Anno really wanted to adhere to the 60-70s way of doing action sequences, not realizing that Tokusatsu production has come a long way since then. I never get why we didn't have at least one actual miniature city scene like what had happened with Shin Godzilla, but I could pass that up as production constraints.
      I get he is trying to capture as much of the original shows in his Shin Tokusatsu works with a lot of references and homages to the original works, but that strict adherence to that direction is going bring up a lot of issues. I also think him being both Director and Writer in such a close and numerous action scenes of Kamen Rider is not a good fit for him, as he lacks the experience in action choreography the way more experience directors like Shinji Higuchi does action sequences.

    I agree with anno, the concept of Shin masked rider is stimulating but the action scenes don't match up with the revolutionary style of anno. They were kind of trivial and unnecessary violent. Anno wanted a reversion to the 70s simplistic and chaotic action scenes. The new generation of stuntmen were so used to marvel style of well planned choreography that they despised the old punches and kicks of the original kamen rider shows. I can somewhat understand what anno wanted, simple, realistic, seemingly chaotic and overwhelmingly crowded brawls in which masked rider wiped out the swarms in a straightforward and decisive strikes, not so many fancy movements. Unfortunately his vision was not enthusiastically shared by modern stunt artists. Anno may have watched too many 60s batman shows but I believe ultimately this old style will become trendy again.

    I love everybody's interpretation everything from The man who over prepares but then starts to wing it when he sees things not look good at the end process of filming or a man who underprepares or doesn't communicate correctly what I see is you can prepare for something shoot it and it not look good The problem with everybody else is their experts at their own craft so the fight choreographer is going to say well this was good for every other film but not good for this one I think his high level of taste is everybody else's problem it's clear as Dave he is prepared but decides to see what looks best and tries to exercise every single option to the highest level and degree I can only imagine how difficult it is when you don't understand that It's already hard enough as it is having multiple artists come together to culminate one creation and have one singular secular message through film everyone would have to reset because he's not satisfied but this is a case of do you like his work Do you see where he's going Do you see what he is stated before and why he's had problems in filmmaking It's usually no one has the patience and dexterity for him respectively I like him and I think that he's usually given people who are legends in the industry but he's trying to do something completely different in the genre and if you give people classic individuals who have been working a certain way and you're trying to do something new it becomes essentially chaotic because you're trying to preserve something iconic at the same time do something completely different which is enigmatic to say the least

    Anno, like many prolific directors before him, has an uncompromising view of what he wants his art to be and does everything in service of that. It doesn’t excuse the poor treatment of collaborators, but the results are undeniable. I will always say that the well-being of the people around you is far more important than a finished product, but I can scarcely talk when I sat in the theater and was the beneficiary of of Anno’s unhinged demands to his action team. I sat there slack-jawed watching fights I had never seen executed in such a way. Regardless of the ethics of his behavior, the results spoke for themselves.

It is deeply disappointing when I have waited my whole life to finally have an opportunity to see a modernized, more gory/adult version of Kamen rider only to get this. I wanted so badly to like this film so much. I’ve watched it more than 3 times now trying to love it but with a lot of pain I have to say, I am disappointed. F*ck Anno. I think he ruined this Movie.

    Anno is a very complex, and talented artist. He definitely has a hard time working with people sometimes, he has such a definite vision in his head and when that doesn't end up being what he sees on screen he will obviously get pretty upset about it and try his best to fix it. I don't agree with everything he's done, however I wouldn't say that what he was doing in this situation was close to domestic abuse. It was two working professionals having a disagreement, Anno got emotional and had a little outburst, and then apologized because he realized that he was overreacting. Sometimes that happens. He is just a person, and a flawed one at that who has dealt with a lot of mental health issues over the years. I'm not saying what he did was right, I'm just saying we have to view him as what he is, but talented artist with a lot of emotional difficulties. I'm going to see the movie again at its second showing because I've actually had a hard time narrowing down my feelings on the movie. I will say this though, I appreciate that he is so dedicated to trying to recreate that 70 style. Though I wish that he would have a bit more trust and respect for his action director and his crew. It all comes down to communication and understanding. Hopefully if we do get a sequel these issues are worked out

    Just came back from the movie, I really did expect the worst for the last fight in this movie, but boy did it still disappoint me. Ever seen that scene where Liam Neeson climbs a fence in Taken 3? Make it with more shaky cam, film it in the dark and make all the cuts a mess and then you'll get the final fight scene in Shin Kamen Rider. It just ruined last part of the film for me, sorry but I can not stand amateur filming techniques like this in a film with 2 billion yen budget. Anno needs to go back and take some filming classes before he can make another Shin Hero Universe movie again. That being said, all the actors did a good job in this film with what they were instructed to do, especially Sosuke Ikematsu who played Takeshi Hongo, dude can act.

    スムースなスタント、ファイティング・アクションは綺麗ではあるが、迫力や生々しい暴力性に欠けたりしがち。
    これは監督、スタントマン、役者たちにとって一種のジレンマであると思う。
    1970年代の粗削りで体当たり的なスタントへのノスタルジーと、技術的に洗練された現代のファイティング・アクション。
    すでに出来上がったものを作り直そうとすれば、それは試行錯誤の連続となるし、そうした中では当然、何らかの対立が生まれてしまう。
    実際にIMAXで作品を見たが、満点とは決して言えないながらも、旧き時代、1970年代の仮面ライダーで育った私にとっては満足度の高い作品だった。

      @Waterbug1591 Před 11 měsíci +2

      Uh no, Peter Jackson did an excellent job with conveying his vision to the whole team and the LOTR trilogy turned out to be one of a few cinematic masterpieces of all time. It's not that it's hard, it's just a lot of prep work needed to get your vision to be realized as accurately as possible, or maybe even beyond expectations. The LOTR trilogy took 3 damn years just for its pre-production phase, imagine that. And when the Hobbit trilogy ensued, the same problem happened on set, with the director panicking and not knowing what to do because not enough time was given to reimagine Tolkien's world of the Hobbit.
      There's a correct approach to directing, Anno's way was a whole hose of mistakes many directors would make.

    I smell something wrong with Shin Kamen Rider 2023 fight choreo since the first part of the movie, the shaky camera like Jason Bourne Trilogy make Me fell uncomfortable in My opinion Anno better hire Choreo fight coordinator such Koichi Sakamoto or Tak Sakhaguchi but what done is done like Indonesian poet said;”Nasi sudah jadi bubur.”

    • @CyclingNeko
      @CyclingNeko Před 11 měsíci +2

      Nah, the problem is not the shaky camera because Kamen Rider series also got a lot of shaky camera. But I agree about jJson Bourne, damn it, the close up shots make it worst.
      The biggest problem is, Anno changing the choreography on filming day.
      Basically he scrap all all of the planned moves that they already practiced for months and demanding new choreography.
      This is a proof that he did not review the choreography from the action team. As if he saw if for the first time in filming day and he decided "nope, I don't like it. Change it".
      Anno and the action director should doing meeting to review all the moves and if anything not in his cup of tea, he should talk about this before the filming day.
      The biggest problem when you are dealing someone with power to change anything, this person did not always give you a clear instruction/direction about what he want it exactly.
