Reflecting I could imagine it might be that your arms were blocking your eyes line-of-sight to the mirror in front, and so showing down reaction time. Physics of optics. Hey, I always wondered since agencies prefer natural hair would they ask you to remove the braids for a show/shoot???
unfortunately they generally do, so I really only have braids during holiday periods :/
However, if your 'look' when you get signed to an agency is braids as opposed to a fro, braids are always fine (+ they pay to you get them done!)
