  • Ilaiyaraaja, the undeniable Maestro that he is, proves why he is an unparalleled pioneer when it comes to scoring background music for cinema here in this short video compilation from Mahanadhi.
The characters are named after rivers, so we shall keep them that way. This is a small attempt to highlight how the Maestro creates separate themes for separate characters and juxtaposes and merges them to underline the story movement through his music and choice of instruments.
In the first 27 seconds, we are introduced to Krishna’s family theme. This theme will keep recurring whenever we see images of Godavari, Krishna’s dead wife, or the children and Godavari’s mother at various poignant moments in the film. This theme begins with keys and strings play a leitmotif.
00:27-1:00 - The Krishna family theme recurs with keys. Just note that even as the ornamental அரச எல (peepul leaf) meant for infant Kaveri is shown and Kaveri is shown blabbing in her sleep, the theme and its respective extension through chords continues.
1:00-2:00 - The theme recurring with keys and ending with a solo violin as Krishna is reminded of his duties to his kids.
2:00-2:25 - The Krishna family theme, with keys, as he shares a touching moment with his kids and mother-in-law, in keys.
2:25-4:14 - For the first theme, Kaveri gets an independent theme. A scintillating shehnai piece, backed by thavil (auspicious instruments) as she, now a distributary in this Mahanadhi, has come of age. But it soon gives way to the family theme in the keys as Bharani and Saraswathi join, taking leitmotif forms through Dilruba and a solo violin before ending.
4:15-4:28 - We are introduced to the beautiful Yamuna-Krishna theme (a leitmotif of the scintillating but unpicturized Thuvakkam Enge) for the first time, in the guitar.
4:29-4:45 - The Yamuna-Krishna theme continues, in guitar.
4:46-7:01 - The Yamuna-Krishna theme takes wings in an elaborate and wonderful moment with a full-blown orchestra. It is important to note that as they go on a dream, Krishna and Yamuna’s family join in but the theme remains Krishna-Yamuna centric. They are smitten. Family is an afterthought.
7:02-7:41 - Krishna’s family theme plays in keys as he sees Godavari’s portrait, with a sustaining keyboard chord behind to underline the dilapidated nature of the family’s current state.
7:42-8:03 - As Krishna sees Kaveri’s அரச எல pendant this time, the Krishna family theme does not continue, but the Kaveri theme in a heart warming shehnai comes through. Kaveri is her own woman, mind you. The Maestro that Raaja is, differentiates her அரச எல memories now for Krishna.
8:04-10:12 - Elaborate Yamuna-Krishna theme as they have their private moments, in guitar and sweeping strings.
10:13-End - As Krishna kisses Yamuna goodbye, Raaja conjures the magic he has been building up throughout the film. He puts through Krishna’s family theme for the first time for Yamuna, for the first time in shehnai (Kaveri has merged with Yamuna who is one with the family now). How is that for a denouement?
Who can do this? Only Ilaiyaraaja.

With just an attentive glance at the visuals, Isaignani, wth incredible dexterity, encapsulates the entire gamut of emotions portrayed in the frame, instantaneously & spontaneously. He is a genius, whose brain will invariably bamboozle his fans, peers, connoisseurs, critics, adversaries..., till the end of time.

You've beautifully underlined every inch of it to many of us, like how raja has done for Mahanadhi.
