I understand the sermon, great word but we also need to discern but also our purpose for what God has for us. We need both, if you know what your purpose is, anything that comes our way, we can handle it. It's for the purpose but we must stay connected to Christ. Anything else- it's on our own volition. FIND OUT YOUR PURPOSE IN CHRIST and start walking in it. Your prayers will fall in line with God's purpose for your life.
PURPOSE stands for- Pursuing (Him) Unrelentlessly (with a) Radical Purpose Of (the) Savior's Expectations.

For example, a "strange" attractive woman (and you recognize that she is attractive) casually speaks to a man (who is with his woman, girlfriend, etc.) - what happens next? With all the attitude in her, "Who was THAT?" "Where do you know HER from.", "OH, REALLY?" All of that coming from Ms. "I am my own." Who then gets all of the attitude - HE DOES! If the scene was reversed, the man would have become defensive about another man talking to "his" woman. In essence he is defending, protecting, watching for other males who try to take his female or his woman. That's reality.
To the pastor's comment, if I am not mistaken general etiquette and restaurant etiquette assumes and therefore says when a man is present - speak to him. That is also true in some cultures. Pay attention that there are a lot of older people in that congregation and note the response to his comment. He knew what he was saying and to whom he was saying it to. Sorry for the length.
