This video highlights the difference between the food environment of America and Japan. America's obesity rate is about 30% (biggest state is 37.7%, smallest 22.3%) whereas Japan's obesity rate is 3.5%
While there's other countries on each side of the obesity spectrum, I chose to compare these two because I grew up in America and spent the last 7 years here in Japan. The places that I describe as "reasonably healthy" in Japan aren't necessarily places I recommend as "optimally healthy" - I'm simply point out that while convenient food in America ranges from very unhealthy to unhealthy, convenient food in Japan ranges from very unhealthy to pretty healthy.

To anticipate more comments on kimchi: Yes, kimchi/キムチ/김치 is a traditional ethnic food of Korea. It's also widely available in Japan. Perhaps another fermented food would have been a better example, but I like kimchi
haha the bomb i see what you did there ;))))))
Where I live there's a place that serves ramen, and kimchi is one of the things you can have on the side. Love mixing the two, just eat some ramen, then kimchi, back to ramen and so forth. Delicious.
Aren't Koreans historically one of the many ethnicities that had brought their own culture with them, to the Japanese? I'm really just pawing at memories of my Asia History subjects, but I know Korean communities have assimilated their culture with Japan, like in a sense Chinese communities are historically and globally.
As true as that is, you made it sound like 김치 is a Japanese staple which is misinformation.
This video is unscientific. The most likely cause is genes. Many western women and some western men put on loads of weight when they live in Japan, because Japanese food is so delicious and because Japan has a real eating culture. It's very popular to eat out in Japan, and when you eat out, you eat a lot. I've noticed many Japanese people eating as much as western people yet still thin. Also I've known many many Japanese living in Australia long-term, and none of them were obese.
Long story short - They don't invest in making their people sick.
TorchJackie An absolutely ignorant statement.
TorchJackie That would be the case where heathcare is a profit industry.
TorchJackie America has a hell of a lot of unhealthy food but the people don’t have to eat it. There wouldn’t be as many fast food restaurants as there is if they weren’t popular
If tree bark were marketed well, Lots of ericans would eat it. Truth is that statistics (look it up) Americans eat far more than anyone else in the planet. You factor that in and people start to wonder if pharmaceutical companies care at all about people's health especially if they can make billions off them. It's a business. Also there's large amounts of ignorance in the U.S.
@Sarah Ball - The unhealthy food in america is the cheapest and quickest food available. People who don't have much money for their families or don't have much time because of working schedules tend to go for this type, simply because it's the most convienent. The higher rates of obesity are seen in the lower classes.
And that %3.5 of fat people in Japan are Sumo wrestlers
Sumo wrestlers aren't fat. Their diet is extremely healthy and is what gives them their large size. Sumo wrestlers are actually healthier than most of the population
@@hithere3250 muscle disguise as fat
@@hithere3250 obesity is measured by weight, you can be to heavy for your body frame to safely handle without all that extra weight being fat

What are you all fat guys trying to make yourselves feel better? Sumo wrestlers are athletes while often simultaneously being fat people. I went to Japan on vacation expecting to gain weight, but ended up losing it. It's a combination of generally healthier food, and more activity that burns calories. If I wanted to go somewhere, it's either walking or taking the public transport. You're standing for a very long time and there's not as many places to sit down I've noticed. Very interesting to see how all these factors come together!

I lost about 8kg in my first month in Tokyo. That's slowed down ofc, but for me it's two reasons, portion size and walking. Even if you're ordering junk food, meals for one person are smaller for what you pay; I never feel overstuffed. The cheapest and most practical way to get anywhere in Tokyo is walking and you walk a surprising amount when you have a couple of transfers between train lines and to and from stations.

I wish we could have America more like this.
Peer pressure. In Japan, even when you are slightly overweight, even strangers will tell you to your face that you are fat. When you get significantly overweight, your boss will setup meetings with you about how it is unacceptable, as it will impact the business and you can be fired if you don't abide by the performance plan to reduce your obesity. The better question is "why is it so hard to be fat in Japan" and the answer is that its not tolerated by society. It'd be like saying "why is it so much easier for women to dress conservatively in the middle-east" and its simply because if they dressed like you see in London they would be beaten. Japanese food isn't really healthier either, its extremely high in sodium, much more than even the American diet, which is the leading theory about why stomach cancer rates are so high in Japan.
Eating no sugar would have same results…
Why are you gaslighting people? This is SUPER common, and your employer WILL setup meetings with you if you are overweight as the company will face fines for obese employees so you will be pressured to lose weight or will be fired as participation in the weight loss programs is mandatory. @@nativejapaneseweeb5544

K D I agree! I live in the US which is what you consider America. But I mainly live in Florida which is always hot suns, you don’t really see a lot of fat people. But if you go to the heavily white populated states, most people are obese. I was very surprised to see that. America is the land of free and obese lmao
Well yeah I think It's also the culture since I live in a country where seeing a person who isn't white is a rarity (the first black person I saw was at like 12) so I think It's mostly the culture because If you were at the top of the healthy BMI people would stare and you would be shamed. So yeah that's probably also a reason.
Try Canada🤣🤣🤣🤣
When I went to Africa with my family im 2015, I ate so much more than I did in America but I still ended up losing weight, kinda weird right? 😳
Definitely a combination of lifestyle , diet, portion size, and how much more activity they might be doing. In Japan they can more than likely walk or bike to more places because they have more sidewalks. Living in NYC I can walk to alot of places or drive. But in other states i've noticed you're not getting anywhere unless you have a car. At the end of the day , regardless where you live if you eat more calories than you burn you'll get fat especially if done over a prolonged period.
I am Japanese. This video was very easy to understand. It is meaningful and to the point for me as a Japanese person. It shows exactly how Japanese people eat.
However, I love American food.
For example, if I were to ask my high school friends what is your favorite food? I know that most of them would choose fast food such as hamburgers.
So this video in a nutshell is saying that the reason why it's easier to stay thin in Japan is because the Japanese culture puts more emphasis on healthy food even if it's fast. Access to healthy food is just as easy and cost effective as fast food
@Jumping Beans not if you focus on local, in season whole foods. Anything processed will usually be more expensive

The walking didn't kill me when I visit my friend in Osaka, it was the large amount of stairs to walk. My calves were hurting the first few days. But I did gain weight from all the sweets I was eating.
What you say about walking is true of Tokyo and other major cities but if you live in the countryside in Japan, you have to use the car for most things. I found I've lost weight after moving from the countryside to the city.

We Japanese eat a lot of vegetables. You can't choose ingredients at restaurants. We never say like please hold onions or cucumbers or whatever. We eat everything what we are served. Our education especially when it comes to food is very strict. there are so many dishes with lot of vegetables with no oil. also our desert recipes are much lighter than American's. we use less sugar and less oil in cakes and cookies. and it's true we have access to lot of healthy foods at grocery stores and supermarkets. We Americans are like "eat today for we die tomorrow"
Overall, they eat less & healthier.
WOOJONG they do drink lots of green tea too. I don't like tea lol I prefer iced vanilla lattes. I drink like 3 a day. This is why I'm getting chubby. I just realized that's like 900 calories overall with just coffee drinks in a day omg what
Estus Flask Perhaps in the city, and specifically company men. But most people that live in the suburbs or have families eat cooked, healthy meals.
Yup plus smaller portions
black coffee is free of calories though.
Well not entirely less but its the calories. Americans eat tons of added sugar which transforms to fat & all processed Dunkin, McDonald's, ect. are high calorie meal places.
Smaller portion sizes, more vegetables, less processed food and more exercise in the form of walking and biking
And also a culture that can be super toxic if you are not thin...

I think I only went to McDonald’s twice went I went to Japan and that was just to get a peach milkshake they were serving at the time. There were to many delicious Japanese foods available I very rarely chose to eat at a unhealthy fast food restaurant.
Lived in Japan and lost a lot of weight because of the heavy physical workload. Haha And I got used to walking long distances.
In terms of diet, I don’t really care for what I ate. I just eat whatever I feel like and I usually buy ice cream/sweets weekly. (And yes, I’m healthy according to our bi-yearly medical exam)

The difference is simple. Japanese food's ethos comes from its ancient culture which included healthier habits of eating fish. American food's ethos comes from industrialization which encourages processed food to gain profits.
Makes zero sense. Much of Japanese foodstuffs requires processing and have resulted in industrialization. Their fishing industry is one of the largest and most profitable in the world. The difference is which industry wields more power. In Japan, it’s fishing, so they eat more fish and aqua produce, processed or otherwise. In america it’s grain, so they eat more flour and put high fructose corn syrup in everything.
@@hellosammy4105 Did you miss the part where I mentioned "Ethos"? Japan is highly industrialized as well but the food preference and taste comes from their culture. Fishing naturally happens to be healthier than processed flour and corn syrup, what's your point?
@@videoloops1 the point is that you first define "ancient culture" and "industrial" types of food as opposites. Then get a reply saying that "ancient culture" is in fact "industrial" in terms of processing and profits as well. And then your reply narrows this down to being "naturally" healthier and acceptance of "industrial" characteristic of Japanese food, which kills off the point of "ancient culture vs industrial profits" of your first comment.

I was happy that all the school lunches at my elementary school were delicious. We played rock-paper-scissors for leftover jelly and okonomiyaki, and had another helping of curry. Vegetable stew and sesame paste were also much tastier than those from convenience stores, now that I think about it. The boys ate a lot. Many students looked forward to lunch very much. By the way, I heard that there are places in Japan where you can eat reproduced school lunches, so if you want to try Japanese school lunches, you might want to look for them.
Always inspired by "Japan" 🥰❤
I’m more shocked at how much healthy and good food u can get for THAT cheap
Fruit is a little more expensive there than it is here. A watermelon can be about 10-15 U.S.D
@@angelalamb4579
Fruit is also not nearly as healthy as many people think. If you want your fiber, better go with greens, saves you a lot of fructose.
lol and whats funny is Japan's economy isnt suffering either to keep society healthy. Somehow in the states, fat cats want us broke and disabled to maintain their economy.
@@Alias_Anybody
In whole fruits, the fructose is attached to the fibers, so it is absorbed slowly.
What you are saying, happens mostly with juices and smoothies, because when they are pressed they loose all the fibers so instead of complex sugars, became free sugars, also if they stay out for too long, they loose all their vitamins
@@angelalamb4579 - lmao wtf

Which ones are the healthiest restaurants to eat in Japan? I am going to visit and I wanna know some before I go.
You can find healthy food anywhere in Japan including convenience stores and ready made sections of supermarkets. I like the little restaurants that have plastic food models in the front display window. Then I can point. Many places offer a set menu for 600 calories.

Alternative title: Why it's so hard to be thin in the U.S.
Actually if you start a healthy diet and workout it’s pretty easy to stay thin in the U.S. But the hard part is working out and starting these diets when you are already obese. It can be difficult to break these habits.
