- Part of the Ulysses 31 Restoration Project; "Secret of the Sphinx" (Episode 9 of 26). Although I have spent hours restoring this classic 80's cartoon please note that I own nothing and will be happy to remove content if asked.

This show is truly cosmopolitan. It’s a show created by the French based on Greek and Egyptian mythology, animated by the Japanese, and dubbed into English and many other languages. And who can forget the awesome theme song and incidental music made by two Israelis?
I'm 30 seconds in and this is already the greatest thing I have ever witnessed.

"Nono... you arrogant robot! " Wow, Yumi. That was uncalled for. And she's normally so sweet to everyone.
Yeah, that was really odd. Don't know whether it was a bad translation but was really out of character. This episode felt a bit shoddy overally..!
@@elone3997 Seems to me the translation is pretty faithful to the original dialogues. Here's what Thémis (Yumi) says in French: "Nono, tu dis ça sans savoir de quoi tu parles. Tu es un insolent !" > Nono, you don't know what you're talking about. You're beeing cheeky/arrogant!
@@Megrez-Alberich Interesting..how strange then. As I mentioned above, it felt very out of character - what do you think?
@@elone3997 It doesn't seem out of character to me. She also scolds Nono when he bosses the other robots around (Cortex)
@@Megrez-Alberich Fair enough - I can't really remember the scene too well now with it being some time ago. Maybe I'm just being over protective to Nono 😁👍 (Edit for typo)

Such a cool extra detail! This show never passed up the opportunity to give children some Great Nightmare Imagery! :D
In my journey this far I have already listened to the theme tune 16 times over 8 episodes and it fuckin slaps every time.
I loved this show as kid so much and seeing this on CZcams brings back so many memories and emotions. But this would never be shown on kids TV now ass the consensus would be too scary for kids.
Such a great episode, I appreciate it alot more now than I did when I was little. Fantastic restoration job! :)

Andrey Medvedev He is using the video from the French DVDs, which has remastered picture, and syncing it up to the English-language audio. (It's just too bad that the French DVD remastering of Ulysses 31 uses DVNR - Digital Video Noise Reduction - which in some cases removes actual drawn lines from the frames. But other than that the picture does indeed look much better than the old video masters.)

"Ulysses 31" paved the way for future DiC's dubbed anime shows like "The Mysterious Cities Of Gold", "Sailor Moon", and "The Knights Of The Zodiac".
DiC did a lot more than just dub this though
DiC didn't "dub" Cities of Gold, they made it.
Another one I've seen before. This included a tribute to MC Escher's "Relativity" illustration, with the sideways & upside-down stairways.
It was probably one of the first things to do that, before it became something of a cliche.
Main takeaway - don't suck at parenting and you won't have monsters for children! On a lighter note, seeing Nono's true form was heart warming - glittering gold!
A cartoon where the message is "you can be a better person" and isn't "you're good as you are". Yet I imagine plenty nowadays would hate that message not realising, no one is perfect, saying you can do better isn't hateful and is really a sign of confidence in a person, and having good goals to strive for helps motivate and keep people happy. They see it as a put down instead

Ulysses should've just argued with the Sphinx that it put his children in a forcefield they wouldn't have gotten out themselves and there's obviously trickery going on ... but nope :D He just takes it like a man.

A must say this cartoon is ahead of his time made in 1981 but time frame in the 3100 - when they knew about telepathy and time travel and such advancement. Wow.

Is there anyway I can get this on DVD as the UK one has truncated opening and closing credits.
I don't believe the full intro for Ulysses 31 has been released on DVD (although I must confess that I don't have a copy of the US releases to know for certain).
TheAdamAdamant nope U.S version have truncated credits. I would love a copy of this. Shame this didn't get the same treatment as MCOG that bidder was immense. Do you have them as an mp4(Had to ask as I love this show and can picture myself watching it on my phone.)

I guess this is where the writers of Star Trek TNG based the Enterprise's tendency to lose response of the bridge's controls. "Unable to eject the warp core" and such...

The Sphinx said it was the Gods fault why his daughter was so ugly inside, but she wanted Ulysses before the Gods intervened and influenced her....
The gods are also responsible for all plot discontinuity.

I loved the Kemetic symbology I did not however like the Anglicized features of the Sphinx and his daughter, that isn't historical accurate.
