Dunno if anyone answered.. but cats “knead” when they’re comfortable and happy. It’s the same movement they did as kittens to encourage their mother’s milk to flow into their mouths. The kittens massage her underside as they eat. Most cats have the motion engrained in them.

My dog was a bichon frise, he passed away around a month and a half ago so I have a soft spot for Bbama, but I think my very favorite is Soonie

i have 3 cats but only 1 did it often before running away and the one which i currently have with me does it once in like 2 months or something
Fun fact, puppies will actually knead their mother too, but the habit doesn't last because they have other ways of showing affection/happiness.
