As I don't rely on lip reading, it helps me to support what hearing I have. Also, looking at the general facial expression can help, too. You're doing an Amazing job. Even if Cooper cracks me up with his antics and reasons why you have pulled the car over today.

I can't get an answer from his mother to know if I am correct or not, but I have a theory as to why he does this, as usually we would only hear that kind of inflection when asking a question. Is this your CHAIR? HMMMM? In an old video, Mom talks about how when he got his cochlear implants, the doctors suggested that she use speech often with him so he could get used to it. She goes on to explain that she would just go around and point out everything she saw. Now if we picture that happening speech-wise, a native English speaker would most likely do that by saying, "and over there is the OOOOCEAN!" "Do you see the HOOOUSE? is that a white HOOOUSE?" "Up there, there's a PLAAAANE, some CLOOOUDS, a bunch of BIIIIIRDS, and the SUUUUN!" I think it was a result of using this natural cadence to successfully introduce Cooper to as much talk as possible, that that natural tendency to use inflection at the end of sentences while pointing things out is a habit that Cooper picked up, reasoning that he should use inflection at the end of ALL of his sentences, creating the habit of doing just that, while kids with no hearing issues would simply develop the use of inflection on the end of interrogative sentences, not using inflection on ALL sentences. Wherever his tendency to do that came from, he will have to work his way out of that habit as he grows up, but I think my theory on WHY he incorrectly does this is almost certainly what happened, and I would think she knows this/notices this too. If not, maybe this will give her a chance to think about it. Who knows? I simply know that this speech cadence is not one that most people develop; Cooper has though, and as someone obsessed with language, I find it absolutely fascinating to ponder. I'm raising my niece, she is autistic and I suspect ADHD, getting her to listen somedays is nearly impossible 😂 but she is so so so cute about it. "Addi what did I just say to you" and she stares at me like she realized I'm there for the first time and if she chooses to respond to that and not begin talking about something from a video or toy, she will go "um...u said ......I don't know, I wasn't listening, I'm sowwy"😂 I love her so much 😂
My solution was to cup my child’s face in my hands with each hand stepped out from his face so he could not be distracted by anything left or right or around him and had to look straight at me. Practically, nose to nose. Now this was done very gently and with love. The same chap is now living independently, and has no issues with eye contact, is very verbally engaged and in fact his memory for detail is indescribable good, wish it wasn’t quite so good since he can remind me of things I’d rather forget like the instructions issued when visiting judgemental family members “Don’t say this and don’t tell them that “!😱 Sadly necessary back then since he was inclined to speak freely and without filters which is not a great idea around SOME people. He is a warm, engaging and very kind adult.

Possible helpful tip. Try the hands method when trying to get him to have eye contact. Hold your hands out in front of you palm up and ask for him to lay his hands on yours. This often causes kids to focus better and keep eye contact. Once you drop your hands they know the “serious” conversation is over. Also their hands laying on yours relaxed shows it is a voluntary healthy form of communication and doesn’t feel forced which also helps them stay focused and comfortable.

as a kid, i always listened so much better when i wasnt making eye contact and i was allowed to fidget and move and stim and mess with things with my hands. eye contact + stillness = static begins to enter my brain and i can no longer focus on the words. it was pretty painful, and only made adults feel better that i "looked" like i was listening, didn't improve my comprehension at all. watching you push his hands down so he does not stim/fidget makes me remember a lot of that pain. i know you know your kid best, genuinely, i am sure you are an excellent loving parent. sometimes an autistic perspective is helpful though, bc kiddos can't always advocate for themselves. the appearance of listening is not the same as actual listening. and the latter is usually a lot more important. today i'm a very successful college student and computer science intern. in lectures or meetings, i'm always fidgeting, doodling, stimming, or something, and i never make eye contact. i am more successful than i ever was in K-12, when i was forced to act the part of a "good listener" and my actual comprehension was secondary.
My daughter is 23 years old & she has Autism. I can understand how overwhelming it can be at times but, you are such an amazing Mom to Cooper. Raising any child takes love & patience but, raising a child w a handicap can show you just how much patience you can have at times. Children are a wonderful gift. One day when Cooper is older, he will understand how lucky he is to have such an incredibly warm, compassionate & loving Mom. You are doing a fantastic job!!! Much love & respect ❤❤❤

The way you mouth "tooo" at the end shows so much about the love you have for your child got me 😭. Bless you for your patience and just know it's ok when frustration occurs. I sent this to my mom and she said "kids don't know how hard they make it to discipline them!" Let's just say I got in trouble and distracted a LOT. Some times conveniently at the same time 😅😊

His grasp on how to talk and how he obviously understands you better is so interesting from a place of how I personally am fascinated by human communication
But I also do want to cry a little bit because even if he was trying to distract you from the discipline, he just wanted to tell you he likes your eyes and that he knew you were upset and wanted to comfort you

as a kid, i always listened so much better when i wasnt making eye contact and i was allowed to fidget and move and stim and mess with things with my hands. eye contact + stillness = static begins to enter my brain and i can no longer focus on the words. it was pretty painful, and only made adults feel better that i "looked" like i was listening, didn't improve my comprehension at all. watching you push his hands down so he does not stim/fidget makes me remember a lot of that pain.
i know you know your kid best, genuinely, i am sure you are an excellent loving parent. sometimes an autistic perspective is helpful though, bc kiddos can't always advocate for themselves. the appearance of listening is not the same as actual listening. and the latter is usually a lot more important.
today i'm a very successful college student and computer science intern. in lectures or meetings, i'm always fidgeting, doodling, stimming, or something, and i never make eye contact. i am more successful than i ever was in K-12, when i was forced to act the part of a "good listener" and my actual comprehension was secondary.

My daughter is 23 years old & she has Autism. I can understand how overwhelming it can be at times but, you are such an amazing Mom to Cooper. Raising any child takes love & patience but, raising a child w a handicap can show you just how much patience you can have at times. Children are a wonderful gift. One day when Cooper is older, he will understand how lucky he is to have such an incredibly warm, compassionate & loving Mom. You are doing a fantastic job!!! Much love & respect ❤❤❤
