  • Over the last 3 decades, the Omega Seamaster has become one of the most iconic luxury dive watches thanks to a certain fictional British spy! But looking beneath that! What makes the modern Omega seamster 300 still adored and why is it I could never own one?

Thank you to everyone who has commented so far! It seems some of you are defending this bezel like it’s a family member which is fine! Although this is the first SMP I’ve had on the channel , I’ve handled 2 others with similar bezels! Not to mention the No Time To Die Titanium one which again had the same bezel action . No back play! Just light and not the refined ratchet I’ve gotten from Panerai, Tudor, Rolex etc. overall the build of this watch is superb and congrats to all that own . But let’s not call this a fake and disrespect Watchfinder ay!;) Love to all

An interesting review. I have the chronograph (cal. 3330). I like mine because it is very showy 😁 My bezel action is much better, not sure what's wrong with that one. The helium escape valve on the chronograph is much better balanced out by the extra chrono buttons, but it also doubles as a secret button for the date setting 😉 Mine obviously doesn't have the wavy dial, which I think makes it look less cluttered and the finish on the bezel is much better than this one. Mine's also 44mm, so a proper size too 😉

I am going to be an Omega apologist here... An old watchmaker told me the Omega's scalloped bezel is meant to be operated from the top rather than its side while wearing gloves because it is easier to access underwater with a lower risk of snagging the glove or having a bunched up wetsuit or other equipment around wrist in the way. It was difficult to retrain myself after a decade with coin-edge bezels but now it makes sense to me.

Great review and I agree 100%. The dial is beautiful, the watch is well built and the movement is accurate. However, the scalloped edge bezel is difficult to turn. The skeleton hands are difficult to see in low light. The bracelet and the HEV are not my cup of tea. I tried many dial colors on, but bought a Tudor BB58 instead. The dial is ceramic not sapphire, and the crystal is slightly domed. I also 100% agree with the comments from a number of others, that particular watch has something wrong with the bezel. Thanks for another great video. I own the original Goldeneye quartz version and it is one of the watches that I will never sell. It is smaller and thinner than the automatic and the aluminum bezel insert gives it a lovely vintage look. I am surprised how easily the bezel spins as it is definitely not so on mine. It is definitely hard to grip, but is designed to push down from above when turning. Mine being almost 20 years old, the lume is still amazing.

My 2531.80 from 2016 is possibly the best Seamaster for those with smaller wrists and who are put off by the He valve. Ok it doesn’t have the coaxial movement, but ETA and still a certified chronometer. Smaller, thinner, and the bezel after 17 years is still tight and ratchety. Almost 2mm thicker, if they made it a solid caseback, Omega could slim it down a bit.

I’ve owned my black 300 for over 2 years now and agree with a lot of your points. The bracelet style isn’t my favorite but it is very comfortable and the micro adjustment works great. The bezel does take some getting used to and has gotten easier over time. However I don’t understand your concern about it moving on its own. I wear it everyday and it has never moved on its own. I prefer the scalloped bezel because it wears under a cuff great and I’ve only been in the water twice with it. Also it does seem to turn easier under water than when dry, so there is that. Mine is just under +2 seconds a day and very consistent at that difference. If you like the style, it is a great watch. If you don’t, then get something else.

I’m an Englishman who now lives in the States. This gives me an interesting outside view on my own culture. I find it intriguing that we care so much about what other people think. We have this propensity of creating a shared caricature for the owner of things: “a Rolex wearer”, “an Audi driver”, “a Stella drinker”.
So now we have this pitiful habit where we might like that watch, that car, or that drink, but can’t allow ourselves to enjoy it because you’ll worry people will think you’re a “ponce” for wearing this, or a “lout” for drinking that.
In America, if you like it, you buy it and enjoy it. If you like the Omega SMP but worried that people will think you’re an Esquire poser sniffing magazine pages, just buy the watch!
Be confident in your own style and personality. The watch doesn’t make you into someone. YOU bring your own flair.
The Daytona didn’t make Paul Newman who he was-Newman liked it, wore it, then everyone admired his swagger and wanted to copy it.
These caricatures for things are daft and cause everyone to have a complex about themselves instead of BEING themselves and doing what they like.
After all, what could be more caricature-ish than being the ‘zaney’ ‘mad’ CZcams watch reviewer that somehow gives you the license to be unabashed in your criticism and ridicule of people and things? 🃏

I love the watch for its stand out looks and overall quality. But if I was going diving properly I would use another watch definitely like a Sub, a CWC Diver or a my Christopher Ward Lympstone.

I think there may be QC issues with the bezel. When I got mine two years ago the action was very rough, so my AD sent it back to Omega to look at. Turns out, there were some metal shavings in there that they removed and cleaned up. Now it works like a charm and I couldn’t be happier.

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I agree, but now that it’s fixed I’m very happy. Come to think of it, almost every watch I’ve purchased the past few years (Sinn, Nomos, Hamilton, Seiko) has had to be returned to the manufacturer for QC related issues. So I wasn’t shocked, but disappointed, when this issue surfaced.

And the hands in the Seamaster you are showing off are so dirty too, the minute hand has smudges near the tip and the seconds hand is dirty at the non-tip end. Something seems a bit off with that watch tbh.

Too loud and tacky for my taste. Got an 2254.50 to scratch that Seamaster itch - the bezel is useless but to me it overall looks way better - much more like a tool watch for grownups than the shiny, blingy offerings of today. And it wears so nice - on a NATO it pancakes on the wrist.

I have a 300M, and while I like the look of the scalloped bezel it is difficult to grip unless your hand is completely dry (ironic for a dive watch). If I played with my bezels a lot it would really irk me. I'm more annoyed with the bracelet and tend to favor how it feels on strap alternatives.

I've got the Green (Seaweed) SMP300 and i love it. I agree that the bezel is tricky to grip and compared to my Pelagos 39 it feels poor (your comb analogy is spot on), but the bezel on mine can't be moved with one finger. Its very secure feeling, and with the poor grip it can be difficult to use!
I think i might be in the minority group regarding the bracelet. I love the chunky non tapered design and don't suffer any comfort issues with it.

I own the blue dial Seamaster automatic 2531.80.00 from the Brosnan era, I bought it new, can you believe for £1175.00 back in 2001. I think the bracelet looks a bit dated now so wear it with a Milanese strap which has really improved it. I've tried it with a Nato but it didn't seem to work, also tried it with a couple of MN straps which work well if you get the strap colours correct, mine are dark blue with white centre stripe and dark blue with red centre stripe. The bezel has never been a problem, the timekeeping is bang on and I don't think it looks very flash compared with the Seamaster reviewed here. Mine is slightly smaller in all dimensions, diameter 41mm, lug to lug 47mm and thickness 12mm and is a darker blue and certainly not as obvious as the latest models. I love wearing it, it has a sense of style, which is something I don't particularly have :) I also have several Casios before the Mad one says anything. Also have the Tudor Pelagos and while the bezel action is superior every time I have put it in salt water it seizes until it dries fully which is crazy and common according to forums due to the tight tolerances. The seamaster while having a sub-par bezel engagement it doesn’t have the same issue with the Tudor bezel.
