I saw them on the Stiff Tour to Essex Uni in about 1978. The one Elvis Costello bottled out of for some reason...
Played pinball all afternoon with two blockheads then saw the gig right at the front in the middle. Tightest band and Ian with charisma to burn.
    Unforgettable.

Remember this broadcast. On watch in a radio room at the US navy facility at RAF Brawdy, Wales. Had the next couple of days off. Went into town and the record shop didn't have anything. Next day got on the train to Swansea. Mission accomplished. Same thing, different date with Elvis Costello. I could not have picked a better time to be there.

I’m a big fan of the Fall, but I have mixed feelings about Smith’s lyrics.
They’re always full of great images, original similes, and great verbal rhythms.
But they’re so cryptic much of the time, built up of private references and bits and bobs of ephemeral cultural references. Fall records ought to come with footnotes.
