I am very new to quilting. There is one thing I wish I had known that there are two sizes in a jelly roll. (20 strips & 40 strips).... I purchased a 20 strip because I thought all jelly rolls were the same size! I was very excited to make this quilt only to find out in the end I should have had a 40 strip jelly roll! I didn’t even know there were different sizes in jelly rolls... please make sure you mention the size that is actually called for...not just say One Jelly Roll!

11:32 I pieced the whole quilt top and it was completely wonky! Then I remembered that when doing strip quilts you should sew every other row from bottom to top. I watched this video a second time and didn’t see any mention of this. The printed instructions do mention that the second/third rows should be sewn bottom to top (and all alternating rows). I have ripped out all my stitching and pressed the strips. Now I’ve started over and it’s going OK except for the fact that each row stretched a little longer so there’s some waste, and my accent pieces will not line up nicely. Live and learn! Fortunately I’m using a jelly roll that I purchased years ago and haven’t used because I’m not wild about the fabrics.

I like that you halved the strips at the beginning. (That idea may help the original version...)

I love jelly roll race quilts especially as a background for applique.

Dawn Mason I agree. I used the Oh Canada jelly roll by Shania Sunga ( Cantik Batiks ) and then appliqued maple leaves on it. I have the top completed using the Alberta jelly roll from the same line and I will be putting applique tea cups on it. It will be a gift for my aunt in Calgary.
