  • As promised here is my updated feed vlog! I have included everything Happy eats now (Dec 2021) in this video. Happy is n/P2 according to Equiseq. He has had several tie up episodes and has had bloodwork pulled after one of these larger episode. The bloodwork showed elevated muscle damage enzymes. For more on our journey of discovery, watch this vlog:

I stumbled across your page because I’m suspicious my new horse has PSSM 2 and wouldn’t you know it, you’re local to me! I noticed Twin and Lone Tree in the intro portion of the video lol. Thanks for sharing your journey!

I’ve actually updated a lot of what I feed him now if you are interested. I’m sorry you’re going through the PSSM struggle! Just know it can get better and Happy has been mostly symptom free for years now.
The biggest change Ive done is feed him Tribute Equine Essential K GC Plus. It has everything he needs and is low enough nsc for him. He also gets SmartGain for added proteins and cool energy, vitamin e and electrolytes for muscle health, and chia seeds for his coat and skin. I also feed a joint supplement but that doesn’t have anything to do with his pssm. Let me know if you have any questions! I’m happy to help and listen

Didn't know that Standardbreds could get PPSM type 2. Always thought of PPSM as being a Quarter Horse thing. He's very lucky to have you as an owner. My Standardbred is a headshaker and gets magnesium daily. Thanks for the feeding insight.

I didn’t know that either but I know thoroughbreds can have pssm type 2 and Happy has quite a bit of thoroughbred in his lineage, before the 1800s when Standardbreds became a breed in America of course.

@@happythestandie Three Bars one of the most important stallions as regards Quarter Horses was a Thoroughbred. Don't know if that is relevant.

@@kippen64 there are a lot of people online looking for generic links via lineages. I wish they would publish their results.

Thanks so much for posting this! I tested my Arab last year through Equiseq and found he was n/P4. Have been tweaking his diet to hopefully still compete with him for endurance. Also, just test my Morgan and have found she is P3/P3, n/P4. Tweaking her diet to look like my Arab's to start with and we'll see.
I had not heard that about too much magnesium. What specifically do you see with that?
Also, do you have a set exercise regimen you have Happy on? I know it makes a difference with my Arab. Just still figuring out what works best for him.

Oh I’m glad you got them tested and are working out all their unique needs now! I actually have changed Happy’s feed a slight bit since changing trainers/barns. The details are at the start of this video (m.czcams.com/video/SdkV7atUeVQ/video.html). I actually feed him a magnesium supplement now in the form of SmartCalm pellets and I don’t see any adverse effects. My old trainer had done some research and found too much magnesium can lead to spookiness or being mentally a bit unstable but I never really saw that with Happy nor do I see it now while he’s back on it.
He gets a ration balancer and a few other supplements now and is doing super well on it. I don’t think his body condition or how he’s riding have ever been better.
He seems to do well with space to move on his own. Riding every day doesn’t seem to benefit him although I know it helps other horses. I ride 4 days a week right now. He lives in a larger paddock so no turnout per say but he does move around quite a bit in his paddock. I try to warmup slowly with walk and trot for 10-12 minutes and then we usually ride for about 40-50 minutes total. I like to keep our week to 2-3 longer and harder rides and one easier hack ride.
