Twilight Struggle and Watergate has photography on the cards that are historically accurate and go with the theme and they are awesome.

Interesting. That does sound better. For me, Ryan, I think the quality of the photos matters too. Like, if I made a garden game and just went out back to take a few pictures on my phone of tomatoes, it might look like garbage. But I recently flipped through Earth cards and they are nice, uniform, and well done. Not such a turn off.

Thank you, this is probably the best articulation for why I don’t like IP games. Incidentally, it’s also why I generally don’t like games about VERY specific historical events (like reenacting some WW2 battle, for example). I just don’t want my imagination to be confined by a preexisting narrative I’m already well familiar with.

I like to try them, but almost never to buy

Thanks! Yeah, I'm with you. We did a themes ranking video and I mentioned I like historical themes, but not really WWII. Not that I don't find it fascinating, deep, and significant, but nearing 100% of the historical war themed games I've played have been WW2. We're good.

I love the comments about IPs, and Harry Potter Hogwarts battle specifically lol. I literally said "IPs are red flag for me" while buying the game for my wife. Turns out we loved that game, whoever was the designer, you can tell they actually cared about the IP.

Haha, I think my whole family wanted to dislike that game. Firstly simply because it's an IP, but we're also all pretty big Lord of the Rings fans (not in games, but the books). So Harry Potter was always mocked. But you know, it's a killer game and simply so fun to play. When you grow from "I'll pass you one coin and buy a cheap spell this turn" to "EVERYONE DRAW 2 CARDS, 3 DAMAGE TO THE BLONDE BOY, AND PURCHASE POWER OF 8!!!!" it feels great.

I do like the mobile app for the unlock games. But the one and done escape room i different from a regular game. That might be the one kind of game that I don't mind checking in with an app during the game.
I can see a place for apps that speed up set-up. I played Cryptid recently and the website instructions for setiing up were something that I think could have been done better in an app.

Pan Am is IP based, technically. Yet an excellent game.

Haven't tried that one yet. I have some IPs I love, but it is a turn off. However, I had no clue Pan Am was based on something, which does help. Like, I knew nothing about the Dune world, literally nothing, so playing Dune Imperium the first time was just like playing an original world (I know that the movies existed, but still didn't know anything about it).

@@boardgameplays Pan Am is based on the real but defunct airline Pan Am. It used to be a big deal in the world of air travel up until the mid 90s

i think Munchkin is a game series that does IPs well but generally IPs are decent at best

I've only read the rules and half played the original Munchkin once. So I know next to nothing about the other editions of Munchkin. In what ways do you think they handle the IPs well? I'm assuming the flavor text matches the IP but does it change mechanisms as well?

Amen Brother! IP games are a giant turn off! I have to see many exciting reviews before I pull the trigger on a Star Wars, Dune or Marvel game. I only have a couple.

Glad the first comment on the video was in agreement. I know some people love IPs and will not agree at all.
But yeah, I was fine with Dune Imperium when I first played it cause I've never read or watched any of the movies or books. But I don't want to now seek out 5 more games in that universe.
