The first question is DIRECT and asking what the persons ethnic background is, the latter is making an assumption that the person is foreign, that they are from somewhere else, therefore, undermining their nationality. It's almost ALWAYS a question only asked towards ethnic minorities and there's an implication that they are the "other."
This can be applied to most ethnic minorities in the US. I'm surprised people still ask this question. The hispanic guy who was asking probably has been asked this question himself many times, but likely normalized it. It's kind of a dumb way to phrase things

Most freshmen I know wanna go clubbing, go for casual hookups etc usually, cause this is their first time living on their own and they’re just enjoying the newfound freedom. They’re often more prone to the high school cattiness as well still. People usually chill out quite a bit by second year. Like a relationship isn’t just about age strictly, but what a person wants in a relationship and how they wanna use their free time and stuff. I know a lot of people in second and third year of uni who wouldn’t wanna date freshmen.

It's a bummer people still don't understand that "Where are you from?" is rude. I know it's often well intentioned and they usually MEAN to inquire about the person's ethnic background... but it's actually assuming the person isn't born here or an American based on how they look or speak. Americans come in all ethnicities, so how they look, an accent, etc doesn't mean they're not from here.
Imagine all your life people assumed you were a foreigner just because of your race and you're constantly asked, "Where are you from?" Wouldn't you be sick of that question?

I could be biased, coz I have a few very select and DEFINITELY _notable_ accessories, that I wear consistently.
