Usually the players with double reeds (oboe, eng. horn, bassoon) make their own because the packaged ones are expensive and don't last very long compared to freshly prepared ones
@@Carsaboy Yeah that makes sense, I’m a flute and piccolo player but if I played a reed instrument I would definitely learn how to make the reeds. Seems fun too
@@Carsaboy I am a bassoonist, but I don't play that much so I don't bother making my own reeds. But machine made ones that are sold in music stores are TERRIBLE so I buy from another bassoonist.
Same! My motuhpeice is either too loose or too tight, but either way, my reed has moved across the country by the end of the song. I have to adjust it at every rest lol 😂😢.
Just today we were doing a sight reading exercise and I was like “something doesn’t feel right here…”, stopped playing and my entire reed was out of the ligature besides the verrrryyy bottom- not the best thing to happen while playing
College oboe player here! I don’t major in music but I’m still very involved in my school’s music program and most double reed players make their own reeds! My oboe professor actually requires us all to learn, and while it’s complicated at first it’s very rewarding once you get it down. It’s significantly cheaper than buying reeds, plus you get to customize your reeds to yourself! It’s hard to make reeds for other people since each oboe player has their own preferences, so learning to make your own is great for everyone :)
So, no food? Lmao. It is fun to watch another person’s busiest day. Would love to see a series of random college students busiest days cuz I remember those days and although we had to hussle they never made me feel more alive.
I love that he included making his own reeds. I’m a broke high school bassoon player and I recently went to a clinic. I was taught but haven’t yet got the change to make a reed. The technique he used I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it before. Anywho love you and your videos 🫶🏽🫶🏽
As someone who plays the violin, can you make a long video of you making a reed? Would love to see you go through the whole process with us! Super curious!
This video makes me so nostalgic about my days studying bassoon in college 😭 didnt realize how much I would miss the long hours and chaos until it was gone.
I didn't go anywhere as prestigious as Juilliard, I just went to a state university for my music degree, but I definitely remember those long days with rehearsals, practice sessions, lessons, gen ed classes and music classes. I played piano, so on top of my own solo music, I accompanied other students and played for the orchestra and symphonic wind ensemble
there's a weird shame when it comes to arts and prestige. In highschool my dream was to go somewhere like SCAD. that didn't end up happening because money lol. always felt bad, like i was predestined to never be on the same level of "real artists" who go to "real art school". But I guess the artistic journey isn't always linear.
Real quote I used to describe someone: “you look like a bassoon player that makes your own reeds and makes sure everyone knows you make your own reeds”
MORE REED MAKING PLEASE that’s actually so cool, I play cello and didn’t realize until yesterday that yall make your own reeds and honestly I’m jealous we don’t have an equivalent kind of thing because what I just witnessed is so aesthetic
I love that that’s one of your busiest days. In my undergraduate for music education, freshman and sophomore year we’re both 14+ hour days. Junior and senior year were way more relaxed. But those first two years they were really trying to weed out the people who are going to make it.
It’s really cool to see someone else owning a oboe, my sister does and I didn’t even know it existed till she came home with it, so really it was very nice to see some other person playing oboe too, keep up the good work!
Alright bruh as a non musician or know much about juliard, but my question is do you think the musicianship of the students "im talking first years" is insnaely good or do you think its the teaching that makes the kids who come out of this school so good
Just saw your channel and one, super cool talent, and two, I'm dying to know what your parents are like. They must be pretty good people to have such an awesome kid. Seems like your head is on straight. I only notice this stuff because the older I get, the more I realize that my parents did a sh*t job guiding/raising me and I am a glob of wasted potential. All you successful people, go home and hug your parents (parent) and appreciate them even more than you already do
Wow… this video somehow showed up in my feed. I had no idea this is what it’s like for music majors. Kudos to you all. I’m impressed (and also worried for your well beings) by your dedication! You people are amazing!
I went to college for music performance and can confirm that everyday is like this. I only knew a few people with different majors that were putting in similar hours.
Omg!! You can make your own reeds?!? How friggin cool and awesome is that?! My daughter plays Clarinet and it would save us soooo much money to just make our own Reeds!! Is this an easy process?
Bro just casually made his own reed
I'm not an oboe player, but from what I've understood most good oboe players will make their own reeds.
every good oboe player should make their own reed, as you can make it to your preference for a better quality of sound
That’s what most players do for double reeds, it’s more cost effective. ( I really want to but my parents won’t let me )
Play toxic
This is standard practice for oboe players (as you might have gathered from previous replies)
My band director was talking about how the people with reed instruments made their own
Usually the players with double reeds (oboe, eng. horn, bassoon) make their own because the packaged ones are expensive and don't last very long compared to freshly prepared ones
@@Carsaboy Yeah that makes sense, I’m a flute and piccolo player but if I played a reed instrument I would definitely learn how to make the reeds. Seems fun too
Yes, double reed players make their own reeds. This is because the store bought reeds are out of tune and sound horrible.
Exactly what you said, also, most sax and clarinet players don't make their own bc they arent double reeds@@Carsaboy
@@Carsaboy I am a bassoonist, but I don't play that much so I don't bother making my own reeds. But machine made ones that are sold in music stores are TERRIBLE so I buy from another bassoonist.
If you think he should post a video about how to make reeds😃
👇
Yes!!
Yes
That would be awesome!
YES PLEASEEEE

The ASMR Reed making was probs the best part imo
Yes! People doing niche expert crafts is the shiiiiiz!
As a saxophone player, I can't even align my reed on my mouthpiece, let alone make a reed 😭
IKR!
And when I need to adjust my mouthpiece to tune the ligature decides I need to do it all again- 🥲
Same! My motuhpeice is either too loose or too tight, but either way, my reed has moved across the country by the end of the song. I have to adjust it at every rest lol 😂😢.
Fr! Sometimes it just feels like sounding right and sometimes it doesn't I swear

Was that Don Juan in the listening class? Haha.
Makes sense you got into Juliard, considering how good you are! Im gonna apply when im older, but for acting/theatre rather than the band side of me.
I love playing oboe, but something about playing English horn brings me pure joy
As a Clarinet player, I always put my reed too low or too high but he just sitting over here making his own reed. Wow.
Lol University students really think their lives are busy... starting their days at 10am ooooooo
I can’t fathom how talented you are if you go there 🙃
Congrats and keep going strong!

You can’t debrief before something. You have a briefing before, and a debrief(ing) after. Nice reed tho!

This somehow gave me flashbacks to college orchestra to the point where I can smell the auditorium lol
Now I know what I would be doing if I didnt quit oboe after a college bootcamp as a teenager! Reed making was my favorite part.
This is insane 🥲
The way he made that reed in one afternoon severely, discouraged me and inspired me
Oboe is by far one of the hardest instruments to play and learn. Being a brass guy though others im sure will agree.
The way you made the reed was awesome
Sending this to my old band director. Im big mad now
very cool to see as an oboist who never could be at that level :)
Ooo Yessss So Proud!!! ❤❤❤❤✨🦋✨🦋❤️🦋✨🦋✨
Holy fuck its so cool you make ur own reed! Especially that kind
I just came across your profile and almost cried when I saw the oboe!!! That's what I played so many years ago 😢
Make a reed?? I’d take a nap!
But honestly, props to you. This was dope.

My days are currently 16 hours because of rehearsals for musical, opera, straight play, and my part time barista job
100% accurate. Now that I’ve “retired” from music my days are so empty!
STOP THE ELGAR AT THE END 😭😭
Oh I miss the energy I had in my university years ❤
nooooo your reed making reminded me i started soaking a piece of cane 4 days ago 😭😭it's gonna be sludge atp
