This album in my opinion is one of the best recorded albums of all time. I obsess over this album still. I'm only 32 and I swear more people my age need to sit down and really listen. I'm a Mississippi boy and Bobby i can hear that southern influence in all of your Music. My uncle Ernie Chaffin was signed to Sun Records in the mid 50's. Had more singles released through Sun than anyone but Elvis Presley. Memphis and that southern sound run through my veins. I can't tell how incredible it is to hear the behind the scenes on this masterpiece. Please keep doing these!! Your music will live on forever Bobby. That should continually bring a smile to your face!!

It is often mentioned how Duane Allman's playing helped shape the Layla album. It did. But for me, Bobby's keys and vocals are just as important. I love what they did together.
Sometimes the lyrical work is the poet and the he finds the throat.bell bottom bules is duane.it is easy to tell the difference because he finger picked listen and hear the difference.
I swear I started getting chills up my spine when Bobby sang "Keep on Growing"! Great story about one of my favorite Dominoes tunes. Now the song is even more special for me. Thanks.
I LOVE Keep on Growing. The joyousness and the complex overlays by Clapton at his best. If you pay close attention you can follow each of the FOUR guitar tracks, but together they are just sonically overwhelming. It gets my feet going every time. My favorite moment is when EC hits the same note like 25 times in a row and it's PERFECT.
That's such a great story about how you guys made Keep On Growing. I've listened to that so many times trying to figure out which part was Duane, but never could hear anything that sounded like him, but there are so many guitars on there I always figured he must be in there somewhere. Now it makes perfect sense because it all sounds like Eric. Fabulous job singing, Bobby. No joke, this is my favorite album of all time, no question. I look at the top 100 lists and it's always down in the middle and I just don't understand it. Best music in the world.
Listening to these conversations with Bobby I’m just amazed at the level of detail he remembers from 50 years ago! Blows me away. He and I are about the same age and I can’t remember what I had for lunch today! The Layla record is one of my all time favorites and I love hearing all the wonderful back stories about how it was created. Really great stuff.

Clapton's ability to add additional guitar parts without listening back to the previous tracks he played is nothing short of genius. Thank goodness Eric and Tom allowed you the time to write down your "stream of conscience" lyrics. Y'all managed to capture a whole helluva lot of magic down at Criteria and an album for the ages.
Also, I think the understated genius of the record is in fact Bobby’s impassioned guttural vocals and of course Duane Allman.if memory serves correct and depending on who’s account you believe, the entire project of Layla was going south really fast. Other than Bobby’s song writing prowess and all around musical talent, in walks Sky Dog and resurrected the unplanned project into arguably the best rock album in recorded history!✌️🎸❤️🎶🎼

Things would never be the same after hearing it... completely knocked me off my feet..! I'm not quite sure I agree with your assessment of the sessions' creative down hill trajectory until the arrival of Duane, who came along with the other Brothers' invitation, and apparently no original intention to appear on the album, though Slide. I believe there would surely have been enough musical genius within the original 4 D+D's members and production crew, to have completed an incredible 'earth shaking' work of art. Now, that being said, Duane Allman's seamless and natural addition, simply continued a path to the true artistic nature and greatness of the album itself... and the original players along with Tom Dowd and the production team, as well were surely capable to make that happen..!
I went back and listened to Layla again for the first time in ages. It all came back to me, exactly why I wore out the grooves on that record. I also listened to the live album, which I overlooked back then because the studio record was so iconic. Clearly, Bobby Whitlock pushed Eric Clapton to do the finest work of his entire career. That there was the absolute peak. Listening to the live Let It Rain, it brought back memories of that show I saw. Let It Rain was the closer. Absolutely glorious.. And what I always felt but never really realized until now was, yes, those vocals were such a huge part of it. Their voices were so damn good together! This is such a pleasure, hearing Bobby talk about it and reliving that joy. Wasn't that a time!
Bobby, you sir are a special soul. A musical line or melody can start a spark deep within a persons soul that ignites a fire similar to the eruption of a volcano where a song will flow like lava with every detail so clear to see and afterwards you think to yourself where the hell did that come from! Pure raw talent, those days were magical and I’m so happy you can convey that magic for us all to have a glimpse inside one of the greatest albums ever assembled. I sat for days spinning Layla when it first hit the shelves and thinking how magical and magnificent it all sounded. The late 60s and 70s was the time to be alive as the music was the greatest!

Great story of creativity in motion. There is that moment at the end where Bobby sort of pauses when he said Duane called him 'little brother'. Very touching because that was what Duane called Greg. Duane must have felt very close to Bobby at that time.

You're 8-9 years older than me, so I was "The Youngster" in the crowd while you were hanging with Duane & Eric & Delaney & Bonnie etc. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE everything. I get these random pop ups so glad I watched I think my fav one yet . I m 59 never heard the whole lp to a couple years back its a lil before my time but knew the hit song of course. Its now in that if I can only own 15 albums most say 10 can go that low ,lol.
This is real music without any bull at all. Pure genius Mr W! Your voice always filled in the “blanks” between the notes. I’ve spent hours (over many many years) listening to people talking about other people’s music which is mainly trash. Your personal interpretations say it all.

Also, you are one of many of us artistic-types ( not comparing myself with you - whatsoever!) who feel colours in ‘keys’. For those who have never experienced that, I am sure, if it can be explained, it would be interesting - to say the least - to hear the colours YOU feel in certain ‘keys‘ or songs… do you think you could attempt that feat someday with Coco’s help? (For instance, the key of D flat is always a lavender/purple to me… The key of C is more of a lapis lazuli… they scramble round sometimes, but usually it’s because of the solo I hear/play or hear someone else play over the song.) Just discovered these videos and I'm enjoying the heck out of them! The Layla album is always close by in my collection - I listen to it frequently. My favorite songs are the ones where I can really hear Bobby's voice coming through, or where he sings a verse. I'll be working in the house or the yard, and I sing all of Bobby's parts. Bobby - your voice is just as great today as it was 50 years ago! That's remarkable!!
Love the stories, and maybe it’s because it was in my youth, but that was some of the most creative and inspirational music, at the time all those songs were like a soundtrack of my life. And Bobby, I had your Raw Velvet album in my collection and wore it out.

I have watched this CoCo and Bobby interview a few times and the story is more intriguing each time. These Layla interview sessions are an incredible look back into probably the most influential album of all time. It amazes me that a 22 year old had such worldly experience to write these deeply emotional songs. Listen to Bobbys first solo album, Dreams of a Hobo. Amazing. I was a big Leon Russell fan when Derrick came out. When I finally got a copy and saw you were playing piano. I became a fan. BUT that was the end of Derrick!! And there was no Bobby Whitlock Band that I could find. That is absolutely one of the greatest albums ever. Years ago I wrote an article for a local music rag. Said Layla was way better than the Beatles white LP. And the best song on that LP "While my Guitar Gently Weeps' featured that Derrick guy from Cream. I really enjoyed the Road to Austin show with you & CoCo, too. Love this. Thanks for sharing.

THIS is why these videos are incredibly informative and worthwhile. I have listened to L&OLS since the day it arrived at the local head shop. I could not even begin to estimate how many times I've listened just for this particular song - it is one of my all time favorites -music and lyrics. And now, thanks to both of you, I have a valuable insight into how this music was created, and it will sound different and even better because of the background and details provided by Bobby. To me, Bobby's contributions outweigh Allman, with all due respect to Mr. Allman. But Bobby was the heart and soul of that band.

Great story of creativity in motion. There is that moment at the end where Bobby sort of pauses when he said Duane called him 'little brother'. Very touching because that was what Duane called Greg. Duane must have felt very close to Bobby at that time.

I never realized your genius, input and just overall painterly influence on all of these great songs and albums.. I can remember wooing the ladies with the Layla album and that EC at his best double album. You guys are a hoot to listen to, the stories are marvelous. Also, you are one of many of us artistic-types ( not comparing myself with you - whatsoever!) who feel colours in ‘keys’. For those who have never experienced that, I am sure, if it can be explained, it would be interesting - to say the least - to hear the colours YOU feel in certain ‘keys‘ or songs… do you think you could attempt that feat someday with Coco’s help? (For instance, the key of D flat is always a lavender/purple to me… The key of C is more of a lapis lazuli… they scramble round sometimes, but usually it’s because of the solo I hear/play or hear someone else play over the song.)

Just discovered these videos and I'm enjoying the heck out of them! The Layla album is always close by in my collection - I listen to it frequently. My favorite songs are the ones where I can really hear Bobby's voice coming through, or where he sings a verse. I'll be working in the house or the yard, and I sing all of Bobby's parts. Bobby - your voice is just as great today as it was 50 years ago! That's remarkable!!

I have watched this CoCo and Bobby interview a few times and the story is more intriguing each time. These Layla interview sessions are an incredible look back into probably the most influential album of all time. It amazes me that a 22 year old had such worldly experience to write these deeply emotional songs. Listen to Bobbys first solo album, Dreams of a Hobo. Amazing. I was a big Leon Russell fan when Derrick came out. When I finally got a copy and saw you were playing piano. I became a fan. BUT that was the end of Derrick!! And there was no Bobby Whitlock Band that I could find. That is absolutely one of the greatest albums ever. Years ago I wrote an article for a local music rag. Said Layla was way better than the Beatles white LP. And the best song on that LP "While my Guitar Gently Weeps' featured that Derrick guy from Cream. I really enjoyed the Road to Austin show with you & CoCo, too. Love this. Thanks for sharing.

Stumbled onto this series yesterday, and love the stories related to one of the greatest albums in the history of rock.
THIS is why these videos are incredibly informative and worthwhile. I have listened to L&OLS since the day it arrived at the local head shop. I could not even begin to estimate how many times I've listened just for this particular song - it is one of my all time favorites -music and lyrics. And now, thanks to both of you, I have a valuable insight into how this music was created, and it will sound different and even better because of the background and details provided by Bobby. It's almost like having a new Dominos song to listen to.
