Compressors are often used in Hip Hop in "abuse mode" to make really pluppy, flatty kicks, that sound like a baseball bat hitting a bag of deflated footballs....or feathers? A ham?
dbx 266xl is far not the best compressor, but it's cheap. It sounds dirty and makes some artifacts. But for lo-fi old school - why not?) Maybe for snares or hihats or cymbals.
