There has always been crime in major cities, but overall i think its pretty safe right now.
NYC crime was worse in the early 2000s compared to now, but the media wasnt pushing the type of hysteria we see today.

When will we know which Mafia family put out a hit on him? That's not robbery. This was 5 am in the morning. A 31-year-old man who owns a sneaker store in SoHo, a high end area. For you people on here who were not born yet it was worse. Paul Castellano was a head of a Mafia family he was shot to death at a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan while having lunch. They only killed him not any restaurant employees. At least this guy got wiped out around 5 am in the morning. I'm sure the police are running background checks on him to see who are his associates.
