It’s only missing Garcia’s vocals for the first two songs but you can still hear him play. If you don’t have the patience to wait through the first 13 minutes out of a three hour show to hear him sing, just go here 13:10.
The energy was smoking at this one. Often when the Dead played a college campus, they’d get that extra bolt of lightning and it would show up in their performances. Although, I do think they got that extra bolt of energy from other sources as well on this night. 👃
That solo in Bertha is Just Exactly Perfect. Not a single note out of place. Jerry smiling all along and showing a perfect example of what he meant when he would talk about those certain ideal moments in time when he wasn't even aware and the music was simply playing him. He just happened to be the vehicle that was transmitting it for all of us to appreciate. Like when Michael Jordan could not miss. 1:12:59 - 1:14:56. Almost 2 minutes of pure bliss.
When I want to listen/see a show from the 80's i go to Voodoonola youtube page first now, before I do a general search. Seems this one Voodoonola's page I am sure to get quality audio!!!!
Some Other Dude I know, it's a shame all the Phish-heads didn't get a crack at listening to the Dead first. After 200+ Dead shows, I saw my first Phish show. I was open-minded and eager to compare the two bands. Phish was fine and enjoyable but, my God, the level of complexity and sophistication between the two groups is vast. Phish simply never caught up.
adam lewis OMG 😱 just before the drum stick toss.. Jerry doing windmills on the guitar .. 😂😂😂😂 They were all feeling it that moment into Truckin’ .. so fun!
Oh so long since I have seen Donna. We loved her so. We all felt like we could sing for the band too. We had long hair down below our waists and fingers were slender and our waists we know they were small. But it would not make us tremble to see 10,000 fall. Not with Jerry by our side.
+Mary Lockman go back to college! that's what Bob Weir said to me after i spent two nights with the band....Mary, we are responding to Donna's talent not her appearance. in the sixties things were nothing to do with looks. and as far as i know...i never heard a worse howl than Donna's. i give my apology in advance YT!
Why this show isn't listed as one of the Pantheon Top 10-type shows is beyond me. The energy is off the charts and Jerry is in FULL ON rock star mode pretty much the whole show
+D Linberg It's gotta be the fact that Jerry's vocal mic was off for the first few songs. Otherwise I am sure it would've been an official release. Although they did tell me this show is not in their vault when I emailed them about it.
as I have been posting all along in the show's commentary, I agree with you about jerry being in that rare air of what he was yet hid so well, rock star god.
D Linberg It’s definitely one of my top 5. The fact there’s video makes it even more special, too. It also happens to be the exact day my older brother was born.
Not usually a big Donna person. But I kind of love her in this video. She sounds good. And must of been a bit of a relief for the boys. "Thank God they have something to look at that's not us."
I was at this gig with my H.S. crew. Graduated the next month ! It was easy for me to miss school as I had already been barred from school grounds and graduation ceremony. Did my homework and got my diploma. A classic ending to a HEAVY (and awesome !) H.S. career.
Oh man...Bertha. Jerry looks so happy 1:12:59 for the solo. He gets pretty excited and by 1:14 he is beaming like he is as happy to hear the music flowing through him as we are. I love it.
Voodoonola Oh thank you again, this is saving my life today , it’s just precious to me. I started going to shows early 70s as a teen , it saved my life then.
Ross Madden WHat he did not understand was that these "weird people" actually thought for theirselves and did not need to be spoonfed what or who to beleive....Maybe he should have opened his mind and lived a little more free....
Daveyboy What a horrible response. That was an amusing post. The guy’s dad was just a student doing his college thing. What makes you think he was so judgemental? He simply said weird people starting showing up and, yeah, newsflash, Dead fans included some pretty odd people.
Loved these days , this show is a lot like 5/7/77 ,Jerry got both feet off the ground on that US Blues . Thought they would never end ! Thank God for Betty and all the tapers !
Donna sounds great here. She steps up and owns Row Jimmy, taking the lead near the end, as Jerry is still having minor voice struggles after his laryngitis issues earlier in the year
Best Loser Solo I've heard in my brief 24 trips around the sun. OH YEAH~~~~~~ also, love the marching band whistle to start Truckin. Im happy I listened all the way through Drums (not always the case) peace yall!
It’s such a minor, simple thing but 1:33:05, Jerry and Bob and a few seconds later Phil are working out the rest of the 2nd set setlist; which is so great. They would have a rough idea but everything was up in the air when they hit the stage. At that point, clearly they working out the big jamming songs of the night as the rest of the show was continuous one song into another without a break. Clearly a band working on the fly and without a net and open to whatever direction the music would take them. Which is one of the reasons they developed such a dedicated, fervent fan base. There was no other band that did it this way.
I like the tones of the Dead's instruments, it's soothing to the ears. They also play sophisticated songs without using the typical three and four chords that most other bands use. Their song structure and lyrics are amazingly genius! Although their performances were often flawed, their music is some of the finest American music ever made! Thank you Voodoonola for another enjoyable show!
voodoonola thanks so much for sharing these videos; I'm an old man now, but, my college years were filled with over 150 dead shows....THANK YOU, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!
thanks so much for this amazing show! Mom was6 months preggers with me in Fayetteville this night.... otherwise I would've made it out! entire first set was classic! Loved the Loser! I'm on second set now grooving to Ms. Bertha
thanks for your posts LL302. that bertha is great and was the first GD tune I heard at 12 in the 80's. Love the signature dead lyrics and music that meld together as well as any other song in their infinitely majestic catalogue
One of my fav shows! 77-78 is home base for me. Listen to Row Jimmy--it's a ballad, but Mickey and Billy just power the thing right off the stage. Funkingruvin man!!!
What an opener! Jack Straw...my all-time favorite! Gave me goosebumps watching Bobby & Jerry in sync as they stepped back & forth together and ripped those guitar licks! Thanks Voodoonola2!
I was having the same feeling at that moment you mentioned. "Goosebumps" is the perfect description. I was about 1.5 years into seeing shows at this time in 1978 and this set list takes me back to those magical days. Jack Straw was the first Dead tune I learned play and have performed it uncountable times by now.
I feel honored to be able to hear & see The background music that's played in Heaven. Thank you, The Grateful Dead, for your beautiful gift of music! You make me Happy.
Wait a minute !!!!! Second crescendo in the Truckin' jam....Garcia's "windmilling like Pete Townshend...... ....this is a great Dead show..... I'm 62 yrs. old....1st show was 8-12-1972 & I can spot a good one when I see it....this one's a great one !!!!
I watch this repeatedly, Amazing show! great sound with the bonus of seeing a young happy, healthy band and Jerry dancing, can't ask for more . Thank you Voodoo
You are the best of the best u tuber I agree with dude!!! Thankyou for you work and dedication your shows never get old to me!!! I listen and watch them over and over this 4/12/78 Duke show is one of my favorites even though it seems like they forget some lyrics or you just can’t hear them!!! Lol
That was a GREAT show that thankfully, a friend gave me a ticket ! I remember one point when a single very LOW bass guitar not was hit and the windows started rattling and the seat shook a bit. We all felt the building quiver !
Hey Reid, and i thought it was just the three or four extra doses i took, go figure.good times my friend, great memories. come check out my channel i think i have some stuff you will enjoi, Happy Holidays to you and yours.
The boys are just in such good spirits here. so great that this is not just an audio of the show. thanks for getting this show on video and letting us see how much fun the band is having trying to keep up with a very unusual expressive jerry bear
Saturday Morning Tucson Arizona Arizona Sonoran Desert I'm from San Rafael Marin County San Francisco California and I guess I'm starting my day out with a real killer version of drums real tribal stuff going on as usual but maybe it's just me and went to know it it's overcast here in the desert Rasta far I miss you Jerry
freshmen year on East Campus with the BOZO's....thanks to Magor Attractions (and the legendary "Schiffty") for bringin' this one to Durham.... Jerry's jump at the end of the show....priceless. my oh my!!!!
excellent! just got done listening 2 the grateful dead in North Carolina totally awesome like "wow" back in the day late 70's! Goin down the line! I relate 2 very much! u guys rock! all u guys looked cool back then 2! keep on truckin! "always"
every song is a treat on this show and this in my top 10 you tube shows indeed. i can't stop wanting to talk about it. Loser is so awesome, around and around has an amazing tempo rush, jerry plays drums, bertha is fun, roses is awesome version, on and on and on. and us blues is a dream of an encore. c'mon, i wish i was there guys and gals!!!!!!
Listen to Weir in Peggy-O. Perfect example of what makes his playing so different and unique. The camera is on him for much of the song so he’s easy to focus on and listen to. Great rhythm playing and use of his shading technique.
This is great, thank you! The very next night (I think) was at the Spectrum in Philly and I wandered lonely as a cloud right up front-row and this is like..exactly how it was. Amen! Love '78 Dead. They were psychedelic angels... we all were....
Thanks for the post Voodoonola. Love these. And love to see Jerry playing the drums and messing around having a good time. RIP Jerry, see ya in the next world, I might be late.
I have made over a dozen comments here about this show and want to make one final note to the poster and editor, thanks a bunch. not only does Jerry show more childlike glee playing these songs like he just started jamming them last year, but he plays with the boys during drums. What a treat. thanks a bunch! I am truly grateful for your contribution.
I absolutely love the Dead probably more than any other band out there (Allman Bros being the only other band that even comes close), but for the life of me I can't place my finger on what it exactly is that I love about them so much. Like take their vocals and vocal harmonies for example; they're far from perfect like other bands at that time like the Eagles who had absolutely spotless vocals and harmonies in their shows, but when I put the two side by side I still say the Dead's harmonies were just as good and pleasing on a musical level as the Eagles. Now take Jerry's lead playing; some say all Garcia does is noodle, and as well as being a false statement, those people are entirely missing the point. It's about the whole sound of the band weaving intricately around each other and creating moods and feelings that one can latch onto and hang on for the ride. This isn't some one man show. This is just the sound of the Grateful Dead. Maybe it's that human factor; the imperfections themselves that make them so perfect and pleasing. Perhaps the soul can connect to the Dead on a deeper, human level because of the imperfections and the delivery. So full of soul, spirit, and energy that is palpable. I guess that's why their music lives on in an entirely new generation of young people like me (I'm about to turn 22). It's timeless. I know tons of people my age who love the Dead as well, so I guess the music and the mystical quality to all of it is still as alluring today as it was during their prime, maybe even more so. Whatever it is, I am glad it is.
There are great bands, the ABB being one of the best. Behind the Beatles& Led Zeppelin. The Beatles are the greatest band ever. That being the case know that Zeppelin is greatest rock band ever. Now dig it the dead exist outside of all other rock bands. The dead requires the Beatles just bcuz the are the year 1 for everything we know. W/o them everything would be different. Even the dead. However the dead transcends all other bands and if ur a deadhead uk what that means. I love lz but the deAd are different . If uve heard talk about the deAd being a little delicate crystal in a glade that's what I mean Estimated Prophet harharhar
Wow. This is excellent! Only one song in but, isn't this the turn off the house lights DUMMY show? Ha ha, it is. Been awhile since I listened to this. Fantastic! Thank you. Never did I ever think that I'd be watching this!!!
I'm not sure what's going on with the drums during Eyes, but one of them was hitting some nasty off-beats and Jerry was quite annoyed. The look on his face at 1:59:17 says it all!
Jerry gets air at the end of U.S. Blues! Is he doing his Angus Young impression or what?!? He (and the whole gang) are pumped the whole show! Simply awesome!
this show was broadcast as a closed circuit show for only inside the Duke campus. I have a friend who was there and managed to get a very early generation of this and it looks great!
It’s only missing Garcia’s vocals for the first two songs but you can still hear him play. If you don’t have the patience to wait through the first 13 minutes out of a three hour show to hear him sing, just go here 13:10.
Thanks. I can wait. 😁
the pained expression on their faces tho...
It's definitely worth the wait. For the lights too!
that was so fascinating to watch though - 100/100 other bands would have stopped and threw a tantrum
THIS SHOW DESERVES A COMMENT IN ALL CAPS.
EM Mikoloski Okay, let’s see one !
MF DOOM
One of the greatest Dead shows on CZcams
Absolutely true!
Bands diggin everything, fantastic crowd to by way!!

+rm1133 that really is a nice bit. also nice to have video and see JG enjoying it so much.
+NACIJUK Love it when the band are smiling ... which was often
so so so right about an hour 12~15 dope jamd
It's almost as if at 1:13:56 Jerry is thinking to himself, "yup, I got it now, here we go."
rm1133 totally true
Voodoonola....you are by far my favorite you tuber. The stuff legends are made of, your name is carved in ice and wind.
+Tumble Weed One man gathers what another man spills, and I'm gathering it all! Thanks Voodooo!

GOT TO DO THE VOO!!
we all know what happens when you sow ice...
how could anyone not like Grateful Dead?
ala Seinfeld
After hearing the Grateful Dead, how could anyone like Phish?
Some Other Dude I know, it's a shame all the Phish-heads didn't get a crack at listening to the Dead first.
After 200+ Dead shows, I saw my first Phish show. I was open-minded and eager to compare the two bands.

grifftrain - when you listen to Ozric Tentacles. You can't even hear the Dead sorry breh
please... Ozric couldn't write a decent lyric or memorable song to save their lives, it's just prog rock with 80's-90's electronica
That just might be the best US Blues I've ever seen/heard. Jerry was on Fire.
I cannot agree more. Jerry is like a little kid who just learned to play his first song!!
The most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life
It's actually the top rated US Blues on Headyversion as well, so you certainly aren't the only one who feels that way.
FWIW I found this video from headyversion.com, which has this U.S. Blues voted as the best one ever. I agree.
2:33:15. most epic drum stick toss ever
adam lewis OMG 😱 just before the drum stick toss.. Jerry doing windmills on the guitar ..
😂😂😂😂
They were all feeling it that moment into Truckin’ .. so fun!
@@TheFunkybert right. Check out jerry during around and around. He goes crazy there too
@@TheFunkybert 2:48:40
@01:13:00 to 01:15:00 !!!
hahaha wow he did it like it was nothing hahaha
I love the look on Jerry's face during the solo on Bertha, I can only imagine the cocktail of party favors that he had ingested that night...
2:33:00 Best Band Ever!
Oh so long since I have seen Donna. We loved her so. We all felt like we could sing for the band too. We had long hair down below our waists and fingers were slender and our waists we know they were small. But it would not make us tremble to see 10,000 fall. Not with Jerry by our side.

+Mary Lockman Between the Grateful Dead and the Methow, I think you have found yourself a glorious path!
thanks mary, you made me smile.
I'm with you Sunshine. Did not care for Donna's stage presents and performance. Not a problem. Still love the music.
What's Dead may never die
It's "What is dead may never die". It doesn't sound good at all abbreviated like that.
Why this show isn't listed as one of the Pantheon Top 10-type shows is beyond me. The energy is off the charts and Jerry is in FULL ON rock star mode pretty much the whole show

I love the Grateful Dead and I love you all too!
The quintessential Peggy O.. Our favorite band at the top of their game.. Too beautiful for words!!
My first Dead concert. I was 18 yrs old. They had me at the opening song, Jack Straw, who shot me down in Wichita.
Not usually a big Donna person. But I kind of love her in this video. She sounds good. And must of been a bit of a relief for the boys. "Thank God they have something to look at that's not us."
As usual, the Grateful Dead, never disappointed me with their great music. this concert is even better then the others. WOWWWWWW
Jerry on drums. Didn't see that coming.
The expressions on Jerry's face just melts my heart.......
When Jerry rips the US Blues solo at 2:58:12! Oh my god.
I was at this gig with my H.S. crew. Graduated the next month ! It was easy for me to miss school as I had already been barred from school grounds and graduation ceremony. Did my homework and got my diploma. A classic ending to a HEAVY (and awesome !) H.S. career.
P.S. One month short of my 5 year anniversary of my first show.

I was a Student at Emory. Went to the 4/10 & 4/11 shows at the Fox, then trucked up to our academic rival to the North :)

+charles forker 5/7/77....Cornell? if so, yeah..... killer show
this one is better then cornell its just cornell has the best audio to recordings. So i dont think cornell is that good
Cornell is 5/8 i thought.

rm1133 His playing is exquisite here, such delicate figures and subtle leads. Lovely and understated.
yep. It's something I like to call a twinkle in his playing. It's a veil of notes he puts over the structure. A player myself, I always admired him.

Too hard The Harder They Fall
Thanks for the post Voodoonola. Love these. And love to see Jerry playing the drums and messing around having a good time. RIP Jerry, see ya in the next world, I might be late.
Maybe my favorite Dead show!
Thanks for uploading!
Incredible fast paced rockin' second set. Wharf Rat and the jam after into a fun as hell Around and Around is heavenly.
Phil killed that estimated!!!

Thank you for a real good time voodoo:)
Jerry on drums!!! woohoo!
one thing I really liked about this video is the GD sounded soooooo 'live' it felt like I was actually there

The day after I was born. Show has such heart.
Oh Donna. ❤
I love you Jerry Garcia!
Go Donna!
Most amazing Eyes ever! And the Round and Round!
this show was broadcast as a closed circuit show for only inside the Duke campus. I have a friend who was there and managed to get a very early generation of this and it looks great!

Excellent! Really liked this even though it had some sound issues. I'm mean, hell it's 1978. Wow! Loved the whole U.S. Blues jam and all of it. Wow!
