The high pitched howl of the motor mixed together with the growl of the deceleration and occasional turbo flutter is an absolutely amazing sound. Love it.
no V10 or V12 will ever come close to the harmonics that this five cylinder produced. It is THE most unique sound in motorsports and sports cars and you can immediately recognise a five cylinder audi when you hear one. IMHO very few cars can make your hair stand tall such as this beast does (mazda 787B, Lexus LFA, Ferrari 812 with aftermarket exhaust and some of the older V10 and V12 F1s). Then of course you have piston aero engines like the supercharged Merlin, the R2800 Wasp etc which are an alltogether different ballpark of climactic motor sounds.

there is no blow-off in this. it's the turbo air recirculating system, that keeps the turbo spinning when he let's off the gas, so he has full boost right after the corner
Ive been trying to find this out as well and correct me if Im wrong but Im pretty sure the sound is caused by air pressure building up in the turbo when he lets go of the throttle. A blow off valve would be able to let some air go and control that pressure. But since this car doesn't have one the air is forced back into the turbo creating that pulsating whisle. Anyway I love the sound of the car. And had the privilege of seeing it up close in action during a rallycross event. Goosebumps...
Well the reason AUDI was so successful in their IMSA GTO program was their all wheel drive system. I mean this is a FANTASTIC engine, but if you put one of those big V8's in that all wheel drive AUDI, it may just be even faster.
Had a 1980's Audi coupe 2.2 fuel injection 5 cylinder engine once, the sound was awesome. On fast dual roads other drivers would get out of the way to make way for the mighty Audi that filled their rear view mirror, it could see off Porsche and BMW's & sometimes motor bikes with the rider waving out of respect. Even had other vehicles hold back in the fast lane thinking the cruising Audi they were approaching would pull out. But most of the time the radio was turned down just to listen to that off beat 5 cylinder sound. Those who have never experienced this engine sound have not lived life yet. When Audi deal in fast sports cars they are not messing around, from the epic UR Quattro from over 30 years ago that changed rally sport forever to present time. I will always respect the Audi badge. Awesome cars.
Speaking of turbocharged cars,Audi S1 is one of my personal favorites.There are also two real Audi hillclimb monsters that use legendary 5 cylinder.And those are Prospeed's S1 that's driven by Nikolay Zlatkov and Audi S2 quattro of Karl Werner.Mad cars loaded with power.These two,along with crazy procharged Mitsubishi Evo 6 of Hans Schori,later driven by Toni Bueler,Bruno Ianiello's Lancia Delta S4 and Mike Jelinek's Subaru Impreza are the best sounding turbocharged cars i ever heard. Love them all.
Absolutely stunning car, drawing this legend was an absolute pleasure. I think all of the Group B cars were beautiful and I love the pure madness of their performance and looks. I'd love to own or at least drive one of them someday
There is something so special about the sound of inline 5 or v10 they just sound so god damn good I remember my friends dad had an Audi 80 2.2 and I just remember thinking that sounds so cool as a kid
I was incredibly lucky to have see and HEAR this amazing machine a few years ago at Chatsworth Rally Show in Derbyshire, UK - and let me tell you, it's like nothing else you can imagine, that noise through the forest, absolutely crazy, total beast, a day that I will never forget.
Used to love watching them in the mid 80s flying through Dalby forest North Yorkshire UK. You could hear them miles aways even before they where in sight. Them were the proper days of rally cars.
Ramp up you're volume to top notch them close your eyes . then imagine that you're in a cold dark pine scented trail in kielder Forrest with that noise coming closer from miles away. When it got to you that noise was utterly indescribable. That was the sport quattro, once heard never forgotten and would bring you to tears every time with emotion....
In my opinion, the Quattro’s I5 is one of the best-sounding “production-based” engines of all time, just because the I5 is such a weird configuration - it’s somewhere between the richness of a racy I6, and the feral sound of an overbuilt I4.

The noise is something else. It’s not like the raw, primal gurgles of a US V8 or the pubescent, boy racer-y screams of a JDM 4cyl. It sounds... professional and technical, much like the Germans who designed it. If it were a weapon of war, it would’ve been the U-Boat - A cold and terrifying marvel of engineering.
Look and sound like go-karts? I mean, all your opinion, I guess. Sure, The Audi Quattro S1 is definitely better than, say, the Ford Focus WRC, but modern WRC cars are far from “Go carts” in sound and looks. For that, you need to go to modern F1, it looks and sounds like a ton of go carts on horse.

It's not even that. It's compressor surge. It's where excess air is forced into the turbo, I think. It's bad for the turbo.

It's not a blow off valve.. It's a wastegate followed by a secondary dump valve.
