Its because gulf war and iraq war were both the first chances since ww2 the americans had to fight a conventional war. In the gulf war shock and awe was tested, iraq destroyed from the air before armour broke their already damaged lines. In the iraq war, the american forces needed to circumvent the long times it took for shock and awe to take effect. In the gulf war, 42 days (1008 hours) were spent bombarding iraq from the sky, with just 4 days (100 hours) on the ground. Combined with the amount of time desert shield took this was far too long, about 4 months. So, the american forces performed a short but massive air raid crippling iraq before storming into iraq with the might of the american armour brigades, full spead agead, reaching baghdad in just 14 days. This was a large factor in combined arms. The distance from kuwait to baghdad is about the same distance as normandy to the rhine river in western germany
