  • Psalm 82 is a psalm of Asaph and “...takes us in a few words behind and beyond our present wrongs, to portray God’s unbounded jurisdiction, his delegation of power, his diagnosis of our condition and his drastic intentions.” (Derek Kidner)

He actually does not know what his interpreting funny how he comes up with some thing it does not even say. and makes not sense what his saying either for it says arise O god and judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations. in other words you have free will but you will die like men do.

@@bebekguitar2007 it’s important to understand- which my great teacher Mike Winger misses (I seriously love Mike’s teaching)- that Jesus never said “you are gods” to any humans. When he says “didn’t I say ‘you are gods’“ he is speaking the absolute truth. He - as God - said it in the Divine Council. In heaven. So when the leaders challenge his claim that he is God - he refers to this statement.
If he in fact said “you are gods” then he is God! God said that! There is nothing conciliatory or “hey guys I’m one of you” in Jesus’s statement. In fact the opposite is true.
I would take a different approach and ask your Mormon friends why they believe these words were ever spoken to humans in light of the very clear text of Psalm 82.

I think Dr. Michael Heiser is spot on with his expert analysis regarding Psalm 82. These are sons of God, just as we who are to be saved are also called, the sons of God. They are above the angels, who have different roles than do the sons of God. It also says, because of their failure to do God's will, they will someday die like men! Earthly judges, humans, are already men, so clearly the sons of God are lesser Elohim, who have immortality solely based upon their obedience to God, and through God's will alone. They were created by Him, they also can be destroyed by him, Psalm 82 is very clear on this. The disobedient sons of God will "die like men", come judgement day, in the lake of fire prepared for them.

Heiser's "divine council" theology is flawed because he twisted or otherwise distorted key passages, such as Psalm 82, Deuteronomy 32:8, 4:19, and others. Psalm 82 is about human judges, not alleged and speculative "divine beings," since we have no Scripture showing "divine beings" engaging in judging human activity as shown in verses 2-4. It's human judges who have been guilty of what verses 2-4 claim.
I recommend reading the book "The Unbiblical Realm: Refuting the Divine Council of Michael Heiser’s Deuteronomy 32 Worldview" by Heath Henning.
Those interested in videos on this topic can check out my series called "The UnBiblical Realm: Refuting Michael Heiser's Divine Council w/Heath Henning.
Heiser used his liberal education and imported the "divine council" idea into his evangelical views, and has duped the evangelical world into accepting liberal theology cloaked in evangelical garb.

@@CRoadwarriorplease explain how Heiser “twisted” Psalm 82?

    • @CRoadwarrior
      @CRoadwarrior Před 2 měsíci +1

@@dondgc2298 Sure. It's very simple. Heiser ignored the immediate context of the passage. The passage is about how God is about to judge "gods." But the big question is, who are these "gods"? The immediate context tells us. All we have to do is read verses 2-4 to understand who these "gods" must be.
Verses 2-4 are about how these "gods" were not judging correctly. Verse 2 says, "How long will you judge unjustly, And show partiality to the wicked? Selah." Ask yourself a simple question. When in the Bible have we ever seen "divine beings" judging humans unjustly and showing partiality to the wicked? We only see this among human beings.
Verse 3 says "Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy." The context so far has to do with the affairs of humans, and God is saying that these "gods" should defend the poor and fatherless humans, and do justice to the afflicted and needy humans.
Verse 4 says "Deliver the poor and needy; Free [them] from the hand of the wicked." This, again, speaks to human need and how these "gods" should deliver the poor and needy humans, and free them from the hand of other wicked humans. There are no "divine beings" here in this immediate context, and when we branch out to the rest of the Bible, we do not see angels or any other "divine beings" involved in judging humans in the manner mentioned in verses 2-4. Usually when Heiser presents his case, he skips over these verses and goes directly to verses 6 and 7.
When Heiser gets to those verses, he uses them to make his case by claiming that "gods" and "sons of the Most High" must be speaking of "divine beings." But he conveniently forgets the fact that humans are called "sons of the Most High" elsewhere (Luke 6:35) or "sons of the living God" (Hosea 1:10).
He then distorts the meaning of verse 7 to mean somehow that these "gods" can't be human because it says "But you shall die like men, And fall like one of the princes." Heiser incorrectly thought that this verse supports his view, but a quick check of other passages using the same Hebrew phrase will reveal why he was incorrect.
All you have to do look at a Hebrew lexicon and check other passages like Hosea 6:7, which says "But like men they transgressed the covenant; There they dealt treacherously with Me." Here the same Hebrew phrase "like men" is used, but in this passage we are not talking about some other beings that are not men because the phrase "like men" is used.
The same applies to Numbers 16:29, which says, "If these men die naturally like all men, or if they are visited by the common fate of all men, [then] the LORD has not sent me." Once again, you cannot correctly argue that the use of the phrase "like men" must mean those being talked about cannot be men.
Superficially, without checking other passages and reading in context, it seemed as if Heiser was correct, but once you dig deeper and think through his claims, then you find that he was indeed very wrong about how Psalm 82 is to be interpreted.
No, there are no "divine beings" in Psalm 82. God is judging the human judges on the earth (vs. 8) for how they were unjust in judging other humans in human affairs.
We have no Biblical support for any "divine beings" judging human affairs in the way mentioned in the context of Psalm 82:2-4. So these "gods" are humans who were given authority to judge the people, but who did not judge righteously. This is how Heiser twisted Psalm 82 out of its immediate context. I hope this answers your question.

David is incorrectly applying a very western and modern understanding to Psalm 82. Psalm 82 and John 10 clearly reference spiritual beings. In John 10, Jesus has just been accused of being demon possessed and John tells us the event takes place during the feast of dedication, a feast which celebrates the removal of demon worship from the temple. Jesus uses Psalm 82 to point out that to the jews that "You know there are other beings that are more powerful than humans. And they are rightly referred to as gods (Elohim) I know about them too, and I'm greater than they are. I will judge them because I created them. I am God."

There is a logical fallacy in this teaching (Michael Heiser thoroughly debunks the “earthly judge” interpretation). “Elohim” is the “software.” Human bodies are the “hardware.”
It gives no glory to YHWH to say He is the “God of gods” if there are no such thing as other gods.
You will have to answer these questions in order to make this “human judges” theory coherent.
    1. Who were the Watchers and what was/is their nature.
    2. Who/what are the archangels (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel)?
    3. Who/what is Satan, the nachash, and the other “fallen angels?”

They are called gods (with small g) and are spiritual beings, not men. God created them. In Deut. 32, He put them over the nations. They rebelled and this Psalm 82 refers to them. It says they will die like men. If they were men, it would not say you will die like men. It only makes sense if they were something other than human. These spiritual beings were supposed to influence the nations to turn to God. But in their rebellion, their influence ended up suppressing the poor.
In the book of John, Jesus quotes from this chapter. When he quotes the verse "you are gods" he is simply quoting the verse. He is not telling the Jewish leaders that they are gods. He is making the point that God himself is stating a fact, that these spiritual beings are gods proving that spiritual beings exist. Jesus is telling them, don't get all bent out of shape when I am called the son of God.
The versus you quoted in Exodus 21 and 22, in the ESV, only show God with a capital G, which refers only to the Supreme God of all creation, not a lesser god with a small g.
This whole conversation is significant because the presence of spiritual beings that rebelled explains where the rulers, authorities, principalities ,and dominions of Eph 6, came from. These are the forces of evil we wrestle with. The statement in Psalm 82, you will die like men, is fulfilled in 1Cor 15:24 when Paul says these same forces o evil in the heavenly places will be destroyed when Jesus returns.

@@ericharris2574 No, Psalm 82 is clearly attributable to what Jesus is saying in john 10. This is a scholarly consusus agreed upon by nearly every scholar except Dr. Heiser apparently who believes his interpretation alone is the right one. Jesus is clearly rebuking the Pharisees with scripture as he commonly does, if he is not referencing pslam 82 then you need to state what scripture he is referencing, as he plainly exclaims that he is quoting scripture.
The Pharisees eveated themselves to the position of Gods in their own eyes but God stats that they will die like men. Notice that as soon as you realize the word elohim can be defined to be judges/rulers or even power, the entire divine council theory falls apart. It is exceedly weak to base an entire ideology on a single corner stone of a definition fo a word that is not defined that way by jewish scholars and many other theologians. For Dr. Heiser to claim to so mirror context and thought process of the jews during that time, he contradicts what those very people say about that word.I have not seen a rabi or other jewish scholar define elohim as being of divine beings only. In fact in Exodus 7:1 God calls Moses an elohim. From your pov clearly Moses is divine since elohim can apparently only be used in a divine context.
How do you justify verses such as Matthew 28:18, Roman 12:9, Hebrews 10:30, Ephesians 1:1, proverbs 8:14 and many other that declare council, authority, decisions are Gods alone. Angels were definitely created for a reason and that reason is to support and enforce Gods orders, directives, and decrees. Sometimes, it is shown that angels or even demons and Satan himself appeal to Gods authority to enact their own plans but they are not typically involved in gods decision making process or council. Just as in America we have law enforcement that carry out the will and enforce the rule of law but the judge alone makes the decision. God is the judge that enacts all will, angels are merely servents of his will.
You need to make a specific reference to biblical text as far as the tower of babel goes since the word elohim does not appear in genesis chapter 11. Where are you referring to?

Now here is what religion fails to understand! It is in John 10: 32-34, where a Jewish leaders and such wants to kill Jesus, for saying he was in par with being God. Jesus then defended who He was, by reminding them all, by their own scripture, who they "once were," by the use of Psalms 82. That they, "once" (in another Time, World and Age) stood before Him "in Judgement." And, as “God,” had once said to them: "Ye are gods" [Children of the Most High, but Ye shall all die like men!].“Liken” to physical men themselves that had existed, denoting a future change, from what they were, to what they will be, in another Time, Age and World, in the far future for them all. "Thus, the very same Men," who "were all now" trying to kill Him! The very same Judge (“God”) from out of their very past. Question: Are any of those Jewish (Men) still alive today? Or are they all dead? Therefore, who are You then, that are now reading this, but “once” the very same "Children of God" that were all born from out of a woman, just as Jesus Christ was, “who are also awaiting your own time to die (Psalms 82:7-Hebrew 9: 27) then fulfilling the very same judgement, from out of your own very past.

Yes, its all about earthly beings. Those who mishandle Gods word and laws causing oppression, death and destruction.
Look at who he says inherit the kingdom. And his prayer to the father was heaven on earth.
After all in the book of Genesis the book points out the clay had no life of its own until he breathed life into it.
And the pharisees of that day thought they were sons of God. So they shouldn't have been offended by him identifying as one. But he also told them his father was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and if they had known his father they would have known him also.
If we go back to Abraham he was called righteous because he believed God was able to do that which he promised.
Abraham was before Moses, the law, the temple and the priesthood. So he was showing them that the law did not make anyone righteous. But faith in the one who he sent which was promised to Abraham. The one they were supposed to be looking for and was standing before them.

Why would Jesus defend his stance as being on par with God by telling the Jews the were once gods? There is no comparison between Jesus and the jews. He is the son of God, they are just men. No, Jesus is quoting the Psalms 82 which refers to God speaking to other spiritual beings (gods, small g) that were in His divine council. He is calling them gods, which is in the Hebrew is "elohim" which denotes spiritual beings. Jesus is using this scripture to remind the Jews that the old testament shows there are other spiritual being besides God Himself. Jesus is saying I am in the Father and the Father is in me. He is showing them that He is Messiah.

@@mikeguidera2774 I agree. Contextually Jesus has been accused of being demon possessed. We also know the time is the Feast of Dedication which celebrates the removal of demon worship from the temple. So we're talking about spiritual beings that the jews were very aware of their existence. Jesus is saying you know there are other creatures out there that are more powerful than humans. And I am the boss of those creatures because I am God.

Since when does Elohim mean judges. When I look in the Hebrew it says gods. You know like the Divine council. I think you need to work on your Hebrew. Elohim describes the one and true mighty God and also lesser gods Bene Elohim. Elohim can be singular or plural. Don't believe me look it up.
