I really like how you went beyond showing us how to fold on the boards and showed us a way to organize different sizes and colors together for your scraps.
As a newbie to quilting and sewing I have learned so much from you ladies. Soooooo I have decided to be VERY organised and productive and make sure by not leaving the scrap fabric around. As I have cut what I need I now have bins with sizes similar to how you showed in the video. Also this way Hubby doesn’t see a huge box growing, he will just think they are meant to be like that, also when I want to be creative everything is at the ready 😊

I just did a total re-org of my sewing room and put all my fabric pieces on comic book board just like you did. The room is small, and I don't have room for open shelves like yours, so my stash is stored on those easy-to-put-together wire metal shelves that hold LOTS of weight. They're in what used to be a clothing closet with sliding doors. I love this type of shelving. I can add or remove shelves or move them up and down. I finally have room for my entire stash, including quilting fabric, decorator fabric, batting, my scraps, and all of my sewing machines. I don't sort my scraps by size, I do it just by color and I keep them in open-top Dollar Store bins labeled with the scrap color. Now I just slide the doors closed - no sunlight worries and I finally have a neat and tidy sewing room! Thanks for all your ideas!!!!!!
I love wrapping my fabric on the comic book cards! It cleaned up my disorganized piles beautifully. I’m tackling the fat quarters and scraps next. I generally make small projects and love fat quarter bundles. I think it’s amazing how there is so much versatility in what we can do in our personal sewing practice. Thanks for sharing your method. ❤️
I was just reading your post and it occurred to me that these cards could be cut in half to use for fat quarters. I guess it would just be best to be consistent in sizes.

I love this because I am a very visual person and seeing all the fabric inspires me. My fabric is stored in totes right now in the basement. However, I may be making a sewing room in a upstairs bedroom as my daughter is thinking of moving out this summer. TFS😊
I was using the ruler method forever and still do for over 4 yards, still use ruler method, and wide fabrics, which are on fabric bolts. I like the comic book storage because it’s easier for me to access my fabrics. I don’t believe it saves me any space, may even take up more, it’s just more convenient for me. I keep them on IKEA Billy shelves in a closet so they aren’t exposed to sunlight for fading.
I make it a rule with myself, if I see a fabric and I want it, I buy four yards. This is because you will never come across that fabric again. At least I don’t.
Oh My Stars! I just watched this and I'm DROOLING over your BIG BIN of scraps! My heart is beating... as Laura says, I'm having a heart attach and a hernia! LOL.
I did see this first on another video, but she didn't address the smaller pieces. I Just tried this and I love that I can actually see what I have now! I've already gone through 1 pkg and have ordered 2 more. I store my fabric in metal baskets and it's been horrible to find anything or keep organized. The sticker idea is excellent. I just wrote how many yards were on each card in the upper right hand corner. If you have one of those 3-tier rolling carts the "shelves" are a perfect fit if you lay the card on it's side. I got about 25 cards into one shelf (1-2 yards per card).
Just started quilting and I'm loving it. I've been looking at Kona cottons over the Keepsake quilt fabric from joann's but as I'm still learning i didn't want to make that large of an investment yet. I'm a Sumi-e artist by trade and paint in many different mediums including ink, so I'm familiar with light-fastness issues and makes me second guess the Kona brand now as when an ink fades in sunlight that lets me know they are using sub par pigments in the ink. I'm just going to stay with the Keepsake brand and maybe try Moda for higher grade projects.

My husband's comic book boards may come up missing now, lol. When I am done cutting out my fabric for the quilt I am making I go ahead and cut out what I can get from the scraps since I already have out my cutting supplies. Thank you for this video.
I was trying to keep up with scraps for a while after I did my first big cutting session... and then I got rushed and lazy. And now I wish I had taken an extra few minutes to deal with it! I'll get to it eventually... 🙈🙈🙈

Hi, Carolyn! I don't prewash any of my fabrics unless I get them second-hand or if they have a bad chemical smell from the sizing (like from the big box craft stores).
I read some confusing information on the BCW boards being acid free only on the shiny side and not throughout. If you have a moment, could you comment on whether you're seeing any effects since it's been a few years? I'm thinking about setting my fabric up like this in my walk-in closet.
Oh, I hadn't realized that! Thank you so much for sharing. I haven't noticed any fading or damage to my fabrics so far, but I don't know if that will change over a longer period of time.

Thank you, Francine! It is definitely going to take some work! Callie changed her mind about the Navy and is going to move to CA to be with her dad after graduation this May. She is trying to figure out if she wants to continue pursuing a nursing career, or if she wants to be an aesthetician. Josh is doing very well! He is still in the schooling part of the Navy and is doing well on his tests. This is definitely a life that suits him!
I am not sure to answer your question, as this is the only way I have ever stored it. So I don't have a different way of storing the fabrics to compare with. I am sorry I can't answer your question well.
It depends on the thickness of the cardstock. The comic book board is 24 point, so a similar type thickness in cardstock would work well. I'd just make sure it is acid free to protect your fabric.
Christine, I'm so not with it that I didn't comment on the video. What can I say. I am trying to find something that will hold my attention as recently I have been starting things and then tinking them as I have made too many mistakes and it looks not good. Great video on organizing.
My week sounds a bit like that too. I keep trying to get new bags done very day, but then things start happening and they don't look right, and I have to rip out stitches and re-do them. I'm so happy it is Friday! I hope you have a wonderful day today, and that your weekend is fantastic!

If you have too much sunlight on your solid fabric or regular fabric, why not do a small curtain for the solid fabric shelves??

How do you recommend storing multiple yard pieces of fabric? Anyone have any recommendations?
I have up to 5 yards wrapped on these boards. I have seen some people just fold up their large yardage pieces and lay them on the shelves instead.
