    A few decades ago (like in the early 70's) in high school, a buddy of mine made a Tesla Coil for a science project. He was a nerdy genius. He waited until the night before the Science Project was due to build it. This thing was 3-1/2 foot, maybe 4 foot tall. He brings it to school and you can still smell the varnish paint on it. The varnish was also used to hold the fine copper wire together and make it look professional. He had a copper toilet-tank float on top too. This thing actually worked, plugged straight into the wall! With the classroom lights off, the fluorescent light in the ceiling above the Tesla coil was glowing a bit. A big purple looking bolt of plasma zapped out and caught the varnish on fire. The whole science project was flaming on the desk. It burnt and charred the ceiling. It was a mess.

    After looking at different solutions for a DIY tesla coil I decided to try this one. The difference between the original and my build is that I used 0.2 mm wire for the secondary coil and 1.5 mm for the primary. The secondary is made on 50 mm diameter tube with 1000 turns (21 cm long), the secondary with 5 turns. The transistor is the D718 and everything is connected according to the video. And to my great disappointment it did not work. A few videos explain that you should try to switch the connections to the primary coil, but this did not make the project work. Then I made a new primary coil with the same orientation as the secondary coil: "clockwise turns going downwards" and not as seen on the primary coil in this video which looks like it goes the opposite way round. And what a relief to see the whole thing work! Sorry, my English is "Danish" :-)

    This absolutely works. There are many variables to consider whenever making one, so if it does not work for you right away that doesn't mean American tech is lying. Consider adjusting the resistance, voltage, turns of primary coil (outer coil is the primary coil,and I recommend 4 turns), and consider there are many variations of transistors with differing input points.

    Brush clear cloat on your coils instead of taping the whole thing.
    Trust me. The clearcoat holds better, looks better, and provides extra insulation- you need as much insulation as you can get so your magnet wire doesnt start to arc to itself. This is crucial if you want some big sparks.
    Because then you can pump more energy into your coil without it destroying itself.

    • @paulhackel1646
      @paulhackel1646 Před 2 lety +1

      why would you use any extra insulation when you are already using magnet wire which has a coating already, even the big tesla coils dont use extra insulation

    First, let me say this is an inexpensive build which is wonderful new to tesla coiling, So Kudos to You and your engineering. However, here is some truly Respectful and polite Constructive Criticism. I love the sky blue tub you chose to use as a coil form. Make it a little longer, your coil winding was gorgeous, the tape ruined the Aesthetics of the build, a nice couple coats of Krylon clear coat would've set that off. Make a nice base or buy a small tub, like a can of DAP drywall repair kit, it is small, cut and drill a wooden dowel to fit the inside diameter of the tube, drill a hole through the top drill some holes to secure via a nylon nut & Bolt., You could self contain the electrical components. Drill holes for small wire terminals. Just a thought, the Corona discharge for it's size made this a very cute and fun coil. Please be proud of your ingenuity, these were just some thoughts, I threw out there to chew on, happy coiling!

      2)upper end of thick wire goes to the second " collector" pin of the transistor

      { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 )
      [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 )
      And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 )
      But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 )
      And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 )

      It certainly feels that way. Ya wind and wind, and the first time ya try to scratch the tip of your nose you lose your grip on the wire and the last ten minutes or so of windings come loose and have to be rewound and you just want to scream! Imagine winding a 4 inch diameter by 1200 turn coil for a vacuum tube TC with 26 AWG by hand. It's always a good idea when winding coils to keep a strip of tape on the coil as you go, wind ten or so turns, reposition the tape, ten more, reposition, etc as you go. That way if you need a break, or lose your grip on the wire, it won't unravel on ya. Also use a tape with a good stickiness too, like black vinyl electrical tape. Then once you're done winding the coil coat it with epoxy and it'll be solid and protected from insulation varnish damage from scrapes or hot corona discharges, or breakage and unwinding. Use a wide paint brush, and epoxy with a one hour work time instead of quick set so your brush doesn't harden on you before you get half way into it. Use a brush cleaner with xylene to clean the brush after.

    I have a doubt.. should the LC resonant frequency of primary side and secondery side be matched?

    • @FredtheDorfDorfman1985
      @FredtheDorfDorfman1985 Před 5 lety +2

      This does not have a primary LC, and it is self resonant because the secondary provides the feedback to the BJT base. This is a Slayer Exciter, not a true Tesla Coil. A true TC uses a primary and secondary LC that has to be tuned by selecting primary L and C values to be close to the secondary LC, and tapping the primary L in the right spot to find the right res freq match. This is an inefficient circuit operating in class A and wasting a lot of power as heat, though it does find the right resonant frequency due to the secondary driving the BJT base.

    If we add another small wire next to the one at 9:11 (like solder it on at the end), will the spark come on that as well? Like will that change the intensity of the spark? Also, how far will the spark go (like it stretched for the screw driver), what distance would this much voltage provide? Thank you :)

    the circuit works but it has very low effciency due to the voltage drop of the transistor make it heat up quickly
    so you need the mosfet which has very low voltage drop and the RF amplifier you can build with some C1815 transistor, inductor and some resistor to drive the mosfet

    Why have so thick wire for the primary if your supply leads are so thin? Also, 13V at 300mA = aprox 4W isn't very powerful. Also, set your iron to a higher temperature, it barely solders. Also, why not use a top load?

      @FredtheDorfDorfman1985 Před 5 lety +4

      The oscillator circuit? This is a Slayer Exciter, a self resonant circuit operating in a very inefficient, wasting power as heat, class A operation. It works because the base of the BJT is taken high by the resistor to positive V, causing the transistor to conduct current into the primary. Negative feedback to the BJT base, from the bottom of the secondary, turns the BJT off causing the magnetic flux of the primary to collapse. The base is taken high again by the resistor and the cycle repeats. It self resonates because of the secondary feedback to the BJT base. A true Tesla Coil has a primary and secondary LC tank circuit that have to be tuned to the secondary LC's res frequency. This can be done by chosing a pri tank C and L that are in the ballpark of the sec res freq. Tapping the pri L at the right spot fine tunes the pri tank to oscillate at the sec's res freq.

    • @ElIsraelJijijiji
      @ElIsraelJijijiji Před 3 lety

      The base current is switched by the secondary, when the base activates the collector, current can flow over primary coil and create a magnetic field, when this happens the secondary coil creates a positive potential at the top and a negative one at the bottom, that stops the current to the base and the transistor turns off, and then the process starts again and again, its a self oscilating circuit called Slayer Exciter
