I've always admired the illustrations present on the board when you're explaining your games and they led me to suspect that you draw for yourself as well. I love the drawings you've shown us in this video and thank you for letting us use them. All the best 😉

That is high praise, and thank you… especially for watching until the end :)

Love the idea! My problem is, whenever I do drawing activities in my class, I have three types of kids: The artists, the regular kids, and the "I can't do it" kids. So the regular kids will be done really quickly, the artists and the cant do kids will take forever to draw anything.

That’s true. There are always some students who will groan when it comes to art and drawing. I usually get them to participate by pointing out that they draw in their textbooks, so why not now?

Thank you very much. I do hope you are referring to the pictures at the end of the video, and not the doodles on the board. Hahaha

Thank you for all the lovely activities you shared with us. I've been subscribed to you all for a while now and you've helped me a lot with lesson planning!
Do you have more speaking activities for more advanced students?
You have helped me a lot, and I've noticed that most of your games are vocabulary-based and aimed mostly towards younger students.
This game also looks fun and easily understandable for younger students

I play a version of this when teaching body parts and numbers - “create a monster”. Most of my little kids (on the mainland) are oddly self conscious about their artistic abilities so this allows them to draw something as ugly as possible with no judgement.
It’s just a listening and drawing exercise. I describe the monster and they draw exactly what I say then a student gets to describe the next monster. You can add in some extras to throw them for a loop - the monster doesn’t have legs…..he has 2 wheels.

That’s a great solution to a problem we sometimes see here as well.
Art, as an academic subject, is definitely marginalized here in Taiwan. But I have the benefit of being with the same kids for years. I try to maintain a classroom culture that promotes artistic expression on a consistent, but balanced basis.

Carson. I'm in Taiwan teaching high school students. Most of them don't speak a slight word of English. They tend to sleep and were uninterested. I couldn't even start a simple conversation let alone play those complex games with these teenagers. Any tips? what should I do? I'm just a freshman doing some English tutoring in some local high school

put yourself in their place. if you were one of them, what would grab your interest? my suggestion is that you learn an easy and great magic trick. teach the kids how to do it when the majority have learned the assigned language goals. If the kids fail, then just tease them with even better magic tricks.

My first piece of advice to new teachers is always the same, and it’s something to avoid doing. So, let me just get this out of the way, and then I can address your problem more specifically.
In a classroom, it is imperative that the students know you are not their friend. You can be friendly, but there are boundaries. Otherwise, the students will not respect the dynamic of your relationship, and your time together.
The second thing I suggest is that you communicate, in some way, that we all need to work together, like a family or a team. It’s not them versus you for an hour. It’s all of you versus their lack of ability. Build each other up.
Now, this may be difficult at first, especially if communication is anemic. Start by learning their names. Introduce yourself in simple vocabulary and have them do the same. The sooner they learn that they can help each other work through the material or task, the better. And they can’t do that if they don’t know each other.
Later, I’d suggest using a ‘game’ mechanic for normal interaction. I use a dice to choose who needs to respond in most classes. And I always make it a possibility that I may have to answer my own question (I also have a number on the dice) This helps students stay alert, because at any time they could be called on next/again.
