Welcome to one of our favourite hikes of all time! Nestled in fiordland, the Kepler track is where we met our great buddy Stephen, and was our first of the 3 fiordland great walks. Join us for some stunning scenery, cold weather, cozy huts, a good time, and of course a review at the end. We can't say it enough- so we'll show it too- New Zealand is epic!!!!
Thanks for tuning in and we'll see you in the next one!
Sarah & Simon
Sth island weather is like 4 seasons in one day when hiking.
Omg it looks so Jurassic park-y!!! And I’m with Sarah - I adore the Kia’s!!!! Very very cool, I hope I get to do this hike one day!
Aw thanks Hélène! It was incredible, definitely hope you get to do it too!
Amazing Sarah and Simon! Thank you for bringing the majesty of the Kepler track to life. It was also great to see it in bad weather, and it is no less majestic! I’m doing the Kepler for the first time in Nov and I cannot wait 😊
Hi Mark! Thank you for the great feedback! We are so excited for you! The Kepler is such a stunning hike. Enjoy!
Looks like an awesome track. On our honeymoon we did the tongariro circuit and the routeburn track and loved them both. We hope to be back in NZ soon and do some more. Kepler track is high up there on our wishlist. Do you ever see people hiking multiday with toddlers or young children?
Hi Lisa, the Kepler track is a great one to have at the top of your wishlist! We didn't see anyone hiking with toddlers or super young kids, but I'm sure people have. We definitely have seen people do that on hikes that are a similar difficulty as the Kepler. I would say if you know that the kids can walk for long amounts of time, and you are able to distribute the weight between the adults, it could be do-able. It would be a very long walk for a young child km wise though, and there are quite a few sections of incline. Hope that helps! Sarah :)
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing. Interested to know your walk times for each day?
Hey, thank you so much! We absolutely love this track.
The times for our 4 days were:
Control Gates to Luxmore - 3h15mins
Luxmore to Iris Burn - 4h15mins
Iris Burn to Moturau - 3h38mins
Moturau to Control Gates - 3h 19mins
Hope that helps!
Thank you for sharing! My fiance and I are about to to do this walk. Can I ask - do the huts have drinking water for re-supply? Are there stoves to heat water at the huts? Also.. are the huts quite crowded/busy? How about the trail itself?
Hi There,
Yes- the huts on the Kepler have stoves and gas provided. There is water at the huts as well. It is labelled as water that needs to be boiled, but in our experience, the wardens all told us that it was fine to drink and most people drank it straight from the taps.
The huts are quite large so they can feel busy, but they are limited to a certain number of guests. We always thought it felt more cozy rather than busy, but we were hiking in colder weather and there wasn't covid in New Zealand at the time. We did not find the trail busy at all, but we usually left earlier than others and we hike quite fast.
We hope that info helps! :)
When did you make this hike?
Hey Emi we did this in January 2021, which is summer in NZ!
Sth island weather is like 4 seasons in one day when hiking.
