Hi Homemakers, here's the comparison of the Nesco vs Food Saver you've been asking for. When you are done here, check out my Cook Once Eat All Week video. Here's the link: czcams.com/video/wt66HPTslk4/video.html.
Tip: put really juicy products in the bag & freeze it for a few hours first, then take it out of the freezer & vacuum seal it. That way, no fluids are transferred into your machine bcuz they will already be frozen ☺
What about freezer burn? I think her way is better!
@@butterflyj685 How are you going to get freezer burn in two hrs?
Lia, I see your point but I don't have the freezer space and sometimes the time to put things in the freezer first. However, I will keep this in mind and see how it works sometime in the future. I'd love to keep all the juice from being sucked into my machine.
AWESOME suggestion!!! Thank you!!
@@homemakingwithdenise For juicy meats, I have been known to take a cheap paper towel and put it along the top of the bag before sealing. Soaks up the juice and keeps it out of the machine but also isn’t touching the meat. Food saver (or someone else.. can’t remember honestly) used to make a bag with a built in absorbency strip which is what gave me the idea.
Thank you so much, Denise. You’re awesome. I am with Kandyce (below) I was just doing some comparison shopping of these exact brands. Your editing and production is excellent. I Really appreciate how considerate you are to your viewers. Thanks again!
I wish I had taken Home Ed in school .
But with all the new kitchen gadgets today I'm especially happy to see that can still take classes online. Great job.
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been trying to decide on these and you helped me with my decision! Happy sealing’🌹
The testers at American Test Kitchen also preferred the Nesco vacuum sealer also and I will be buying one of them since the one I have is a waste of money. I enjoyed your presentation of the two units and describing what they could do.
Great video! You made it so easy and safe! Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
Thank you so very much for this video! It's my very first time using my Nesco vacuum sealer!
Double bagging with ziplock defeats the purpose because you didn’t get the air out of the first bags.
Exactley, I was thinking the same thing. She's taking the shot out of the second bag, but the second bag still had sit in it.
I was thinking the same thing. If for some reason it was able to suck the air out of the inner zip locks bags then this defeats the purpose of not contaminating the more expensive outer bag. So either way this is not a good strategy or tip. In my opinion, it is best to just use vacuum bags. I do appreciate her review of the two vacuum sealers.
She never sealed the first bag, all she did was fold it over, it still sucked air out of that bag as well, I was wondering the same thing and then realized she never closed the other bag
She never sealed the 1st bag!
I was thinking the same thing.
Good video. I've given up on FoodSaver machines. Received my Nesco in today. Happy the FS jar sealer works with it.
I subbed just for the bag in a bag trick, but also because she's a joy to watch.
Thanks for the comparison! I have been trying to figure out which one to get to fit my prepping needs.
I personally prefer the Nesco but I do enjoy the Foodsaver. I’m going to have my hubby work with it and get his thoughts. We will see what he prefers.
This is Great I Love freezing my harvest This was Awesome and in time For My Harvest, Thanks so much for Sharing have a wonderful Evening 🌺
Just discovered your channel. I love your clear explanation and presentation. I’ll be watching more! Subscribed.
Thanks for the heads up
Thank you so much, just got one the small one I watched a couple of videos but you nailed it for me I couldn't figure it out thanks again 🥑🥕🥦😁 Happy prepping!
I’ve been shopping these same two products and you helped me decide and you’re so pleasant to listen to. Thanks so much for sharing.
You are so welcome. Which one did you decide to get?
She is just adorable. I just subscribed after looking for a video on the vacuum sealers.
Thanks for this!! Very helpful! BTW...I LOVE your dress!!!
Yours was an excellent review. Thank you. Just purchased it, mainly because of your presentation.
I agree! I have the Nesco Deluxe and I Love the double seal strip and the powerful vacuum removes all the air and it’s like a brick!
thanks for the video, I have decided on a Nesco my self
Great well reasoned comparison.
Thank you for this. I am an avid prep cook and I really want a vacuum sealer.
Also, your dress is fabulous-just lovely
I have owned a few of the Foodsaver units, they all failed in short order, and I found that if you were doing multiple bags, the unit had to rest, or simply died on you. I tried another brand too, I forget which one, it failed in short order too. I gave up on them, but this Nesco unit... I may try that. TY for the video!
Thank you for your tips
I absolutely love your dress. So cute. Thank you for the information.
You are so welcome and thank you. Which vacuum sealer did you like best?
Isn't it cute ?. I thought the same. She's just adorable.
Great video Denise. I have one but I haven’t used it in years. I really enjoyed watching tfs
Shanna, as meat and other consumables rise in price, buying in bulk can prove a cost saver. Get that vacuum sealer out and see if it helps your food budget.
Perfect timing since I’m looking into vacuum sealers and comparing tonight. This is great.
Oh...I'm glad I was right on time.
@@homemakingwithdenise Where do you get The Nasco Because I have a food saver and I really don't like it
@@vernelllevingston1800 I've got a link in my description box to one on Amazon. Try that link.
@@homemakingwithdenise OK thank you
Very informative video Denise. I love my sealer. It saves money and food lasts longer in the freezer.
Great idea to double bag. I will be doing that from now on. TFS
HiClearissa, thanks for stopping by and yes, the double bagging is helpful with the more expensive bags. What kind of vacuum sealer do you have?
But how did you get the air out of the bag inside of a bag that seems like you defeated the purpose of vacuuming out the air I don’t understand I just got me a vacuum packing machine I guess it’s an off brand but it was 50 bucks and it holds gallon size freezer bags and all know it doesn’t have the meat drippings tray it has a sponge around it so I guess that would be considered the same thing but it does have a little tray there that you can clean but you can’t take it out but if you use a Ziploc bag inside of a freezer bag does that not defeat the purpose of vacuum packing because I am not doing this yet I just received the machine today and I went to learn how to use this machine on CZcams and to me I just wanna know how you know that that’s going to actually vacuum out of both bags or does just vacuuming the outer bagIs all that counts
Totally agree! Wirecutter also recommends Nesco.
Hi Denise, you are a very smart woman!! You go, girl!!!
This was very helpful
Hi Tommy. I see you are a gardener. It just got right in our area to start getting things in the ground. I’m so ready to play in the dirt. What do you put up?
great tip on being able to re-use the bags!
Hi Ada, some with more experience at this than me don’t think that’s a good idea. They believe it might not seal well. I’ve done okay but thought I’d better pass the message along.
Thanks for the video, it seems like the copper tape that protects the dual heating element is missing.
Love your channel. You seem like such a nice person.
That's clever using the Ziploc bags inside the vacuum sealer bags to be able to reuse them in the future. It was great timing on this video I've been trying to decide if I want to buy one or not, thanks!
I think vacuum sealers are invaluable. Why it took me so long to use one I’ll never know but I’m glad alive got one now.
Super idea!
New subscriber! Love your tips for reusing bags! 💙
Hi BlueGrassBound. I got a few people take me to task about reusing bags so here's the thing. You cannot reuse the bags if protein, like meat, has been placed in it. So, I had been packing the meats in a cheaper bag and then vacuum sealing in the good bags. Several viewers have advised me that this practice reduces the effectiveness of the vacuum sealing so I no longer do this. You can decide for yourself how you want to proceed. Thanks for watching and please, tell me, what video I can make for you.
Thank you very kindly for your review. I am in the market for a vacuum sealer, so this helped a great deal! I think I will go with the Nesco. Oh and I subscribed, too :-)
Hello there. I just saw this message as I was circling back to old videos. I think you will be well pleased with the Nesco.
Loved this information. You look so pretty!
Oh my, thank you June. I appreciate your kindness. How about the vacuum sealers? Did you like either of them?
Your dress style and presentation is quite elegant. Subscribed.
Thank you so much for this video.
You’re welcome. Did it help you decide which one to purchase?
@@homemakingwithdenise I bought a more expensive Food Saver during the height of the pandemic only because it was that or nothing at all. I wanted the Nesco but at the time none were available. Went on Facebook Marketplace and found the canisters cheap. Used them today for pasta and sugar. I have some canning jars for more dry canning. You can’t find the canisters anywhere.
Hello from Mississippi! First time watching
I totally stumbled upon your video for the food saver and I swear you made me smile so big as you remind me of a sweet friend of mine. I'm now a new fan of yours
Hello! I am so glad to have you as a member of the T&T community. What video can I make for you?
@@homemakingwithdenise Anything I'm learning a lot from you and love everything I've seen!!
Hi. Mrs. Denise. I find myself using tons of oatmeal as well. I use it not only for breakfast but for making cookies and bread. Your voice is so comforting. It reminds me of the beautiful voice of Irene Cara.
Oh my...Irene Cara! Thank you. What a nice comparison. And yes...oatmeal is useful for so many things. For us it’s typically a breakfast cereal and then cookies. Hahaha!
@@homemakingwithdenise Cookies preferred 😋.
We also vac bag the raisin bran and oatmeal, then store that for long term. As long as your cereal does not have nuts in it (they go rancid in a year or two) you can store dry cereal, rice, oatmeal, beans, etc for a VERY long time in a hard vacuumed foodsaver type bag.
I just found your channel and I love it! I also love your dress....it reminds me of a time when ladies dressed like ladies. It is very flattering.
You run a nice home. In product design we called it product feedback. The Nesco is giving you the info you want when you want it.
Hi Denise
Awesome video 💯... just what I needed...
Good info. & very well explained. 👏👏👏
My first time watching you.
I just subscribed to your channel & liked the video. I will be buying a Nesco.
Thank you 👍👍👍

I'm glad you found me. I hope you purchase a vacuum sealer that works for you. Feel free to check out either of my links in the description box.
I found this comparison odd as the foodsaver unit was a very basic unit. I've been using foodsaver for years now and absolutely love it. I can cut my bags, i can marinate food in compatible containers, i have no complaints.
I know nothing about Nesco, it looks like a great product but you should look at other models of foodsaver to compare to.
You do the oats like I do mine. I also put my rice in the 1/2 gallon jugs. I have ling term storage on quart jars that are vacuum sealed. But, I am hoping to get a new vacuum sealer. And wanted to see your review on the Nesco.
@This and That with Denise Jordan please tap your glass jars (on the counter top) a few times after filling them up, you'll find you can add quite a bit bit more oatmeal to the jars.
Oh...I did tap them a few times but I might not have shown this on camera. Thank you for the reminder.
Only problem with using the that cheaper bag for your chicken is that you're defeating the purpose of the vacuum seal, since that cheaper bag won't be sealed tightly to the chicken meaning there's air in that bag, so it's prone to freezer burn. So in that example anyway, you're trading protection against freezer burn for the ability to reuse the foodsaver bag..
instead of double bagging, couldnt you just wash the bag like you would dishes? You can reuse for same meats if youre worried about residual flavor contamination or something. i havent used my sealer yet so this is a legit question.
@@hoofhearted4 you could probably do that a couple or so times, but kind of like w/ plastic water bottles that get reused over and over even with just water, the plastic may start to absorb "flavor" and leach that back into other food that gets stored in it. I think you could certainly do it a couple or so times though - not a bad idea especially if you reuse it for the same food.
@@hoofhearted4 My parents have been using foodsaver bags and reusing them as they cut the seals off and the bags get smaller and smaller. Just turn them inside out and wash like other plastic dishes! Unless you enjoy throwing away your money.
True
Do you zip lock the zip lock bag before putting it in the vacum sealer bags or do you leave partially unzipped so the air can be removed? Thanks
Great video! I've been researching the Nesco vs-12 and your video "sealed" the deal for me (pun intended). 😀 Do you know if it will work with freezer bags if I cut off the zipper top?
I don't know if you can do this. I've not tried it and I don't have the science behind it so I really can't say. I don't want to advice you of something that turns out poorly.
Thanks!!!!!!
My Nesco vs-12 needs (upper) gasket replacement; do you have a suggestion on where I can purchase them?
Thanks
love your dress and the review, you are sooooo classy!
Hahaha! Thank you, Gloria. I am just trying to be presentable.
I have a food saver some where around here forgot where I put it....lol
I’m curious, are the bags expensive that you seal with?
Thanks for sharing I’m trying to figure out which one to buy and I got to figure out the price
Check my Amazon links for pricing and go from there. You should find something to fit your budget.
I rely upon my Food Saver. Essential when cooking for two light eaters.
Jeanne, how I managed without a vacuum sealer is hard to believe now. I waste a lot less food. What kind of Food Saver do you have?
Does the Nesco have an accessory hose that you can use to take the air out of canning jars when you’re storing dry ingredients I can’t find that information anywhere
Yes.
I believe it has to be purchased separately.
I just got my Nesco VS 12 sealer last week. I see mine appears little different at the sealing heat strip as it has a heat resistant covering on the heat strips and the bags don't stick or melt to the heat strips as it appeard your model did. Today I used it for the 1st time for ribs that I'm going to sous vide cook tomorrow. You gave me some great new ideas for the bulk cereal. Thanks!
Hi Chuck. We’ve had this Nesco for a while so our model is older. Hmmm . I wouldn’t mind getting a newer model but you know how it goes...money, money, money. Ours is working fine so I haven’t investigated replacing it. Maybe I should. Thanks for stopping by. Please come again.
The heat seal elements should be covered by a brown tape to keep the plastic bag from contacting the elements directly. The tape is called ‘Kapton tape’ and you can buy it and replace what’s missing.
I Have seen people remove it thinking it was there for shipping, like the clear sheet over a display screen.
So it didn't Vaccum seal tight, is what I didn't see. Just wondering, because I'm looking for a tight vaccum seal.
Hello Denise. I’m out in Southern California and go out for Bluefin tuna. Do you feel the Nesco would work on a 5 pound chunk of tuna? This will be my first vacuum sealer and I want to do it once and be done with it.
I think it would work if the tuna fits in the bag. Gallon size bags are the biggest the vacuum sealer bags come in. Will a five pound chunk of fish fit in that? if not, you might have to cut it down. I asked my husband who is the fish expert and we put a lot of fish in the freezer. He doesn’t think you can do a five pound piece because of bag size. His suggestion is to divide the fish into three or four parts and freeze it that way. His thought was five pounds is a lot of fish. If you froze it in a chunk like that you’d have to cook it all when defrosted.
I like your funnel, where did you get it? I like that idea double bagging
Hi Sheila, that funnel is vintage. It belonged to my grandmother. I have a few of her kitchen things. I’m surprised you picked up on that.n
I was thinking the same thing! I have one in my glass cabinet along with a vintage flour sifter, scale, vintage canning books, and my grandma's vintage Rumford cook book. I had an instant connection when Denise brought that out. Three old souls here.
using the cheaper seal bags inside the vacuum bags probably leaves air gaps in the meat. What if you leave the inner back slightly open, this then would remove all the air out of the inner bag too?
thank you for stopping by. So many people have said that this is a bad idea...the bag in a bag so I don't do it anymore. I just seal it properly and toss the bag when done.
Do I even need a vacum packer ... i freeze stuff all the time ... never had an issue ...
I realy want to know how their vacuum sealers are still working after using it for at least a year .I see lots of good reviews but only on owning a sealer new or a month or so.. Does it last ? is the question to know..
I just bought a Nesco S 09 but not unpacked it yet. I read a few owners say their nesco's quit working after a month etc
I've had my Nesco American Harvest for several years and it is still working just fine. My Food Saver Mini is also working just fine after almost two years. I think you will be happy with either one. The nice thing about the Nesco is it can manage gallon size bags. My little food saver can only do quart size bags. I don't know of anyone who has not been happy with either.
Hi Denise good evening how are you? Happy Mother’s Day to you dear 🙂❤️ and I enjoyed watching your videos and I love you so much 🙂😀😊😄😁😘❤️💙💛💚💗💜

I have a larger Foodsaver that's comparable to the Nesco. They function the same way.
Thank you for sharing this comment. I’ll have to check out the larger food saver.
That is the second time I heard someone say they were using a bag they had used previously.....I think I must be miss interpreting. How or why would you re use a plastic bag that has has other food stored in it?
im guessing you just wash it out and then you can reuse it.
what about the most important part for many of us? In my testing after going out and buying a nesco to replace my worn out foodsaver based on everyone's recommendations, I found that the nesco takes 30-34 seconds to vac and seal the same thing that the foodsaver can do in only 23 seconds. The time difference goes way up when you do something larger in something like a pleated bag.
Who cares about count downs or flashing lights or poofs. I care about wasting time.
I would dap the chicken as best I can and then put a paper towel near the top of the chicken so that juices don't enter the machine and accumulate in the paper towel.
What about doing jars, Nesco doesn't make the hose attachment anyway
Rusty, I have not had much luck with doing jars. I've got the food saver and have tried this but I'm not doing something quite right. I still working on that piece.
@@homemakingwithdenise, I found out recently that you can vacuum seal jars with a brake bleeder. Like from the automotive department. It's a manual way to do it.
the bags are easy to wash vs using all that plastic and having it end up in the landfill
I've adjusted what i do now. I no longer put a bag inside a bag. I will wash and reuse bags that don't have a protein product in it but the ones with meat...I just have to discard. I hear you!
Surprised you didn't vacuum seal the oatmeal jars that went up on the shelf...maybe you go through it quickly
You know...I didn’t think to do that. I’ll have to go back and vacuum seal them. I’ve got the equipment but I’m not as good with that piece. .
You are amazing...if you try you will be successful for sure
Food Saver 2in1 5680
what about vacuum jars
I've not had much success with vacuum jars just yet. I'm still working on that. When I get it sorted out, I'll post about it. Thanks for reminding me I need to do this.
Thanks for the response my mother was a avid home canning person she would make homemade pickles, (which by the way were the best in world wish I new her recipe) tomato's, green beans on and on
So happy that I found your site
@@homemakingwithdenise, I haven't been able to find the accessories for jars. I bought a Nesco today, but will probably return it tomorrow because of the jar problem.
I am a foodsaver girl . I don't like big machines 😒
I sanitize and reuse all bags. those are expensive
I understand about the expense of the bags but this is what I've learned. It's okay to wash and reuse the bags as long as no meat (protein) was placed in the bag. If it was used to freeze meat...you must discard that bag.
It looks like the chicken will get freezer burn, its not vaccum packed.
Umm no. It shouldn't get freezer burn. It sealed nicely and sucked out all the air. I get good results with this. Give it a try. Or, go with the Nesco American Harvest Vacuum Sealer. It works nicely.
You should not seal just cut off the seal on the zip lock bag, oxygen and air is left in the zip lock if you seal the zip lock bag. I wash all my vac bags roll them up and store in the freezer for reuse.
Why do you store your vac bags in the freezer? Lookig to buy a sealer, but bagcost has stopped me b4 now.
@@carbar3936 only the bags that I have washed and dried out that I can reuse, not the new ones. My thinking is if I reuse bags I want to be sure or minimize the potential for bacteria. I roll up all the reused bags and put in freezer after they are cleaned and dried. I have the nesco v-12 works great, lots of features.
@@tomasso883 Hi T, and thank you for your reply. Because of you I want this particular Nesco, but saw many bad reviews (amazon) w/ only a few good reviews for this model. Have washed my Ziplocks to reuse for years, but never thought to freeze them for added protection from bacteria. I usually use Dollar Tree cheap bags to put my meats in then into Ziplock. Have a wonderful holiday season!
@@carbar3936 That’s great enjoy the new vac sealer. The bags I was talking about are the vac. bags, I freeze my ziplocks too. I just bought a prime rib roast 5lbs for Christmas Eve., since that’s Saturday I popped it into a vac. bag and in the fridge, I was bit concerned with Saturday being 4days away so I vac bagged it. Have a great holiday season too.
@@tomasso883 Yes, I understood you meant vac bags in freezer. I never thought to freeze used and washed ziplock bags in freezer for added anti-bacteria protection. Usually put in drawer after drying. Thx for the freezer tip and hoping I get nesco vac from somebody's Santa before buying it myself! LOL Yum Yum at you rib roast. We're still debating on the meat choice(s).
Putting a ziploc bag in the vacuum bag defeats the purpose. there's a reason why the vacuum bags have a texture and the air still inside the ziploc bag
You are right. I don't do this anymore. I've learned better. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
@@homemakingwithdenise definitely would be if it worked. You can actually buy vacuum sealer bags in bulk and they end up being cheaper or close to the price of ziploc bags. Depending on the size of the bags and where you get them.
You played with jars but did not show a jar vacuum seal what a waste and do these us any bags or just theexspensive bags
🤣🤣🤣
You're missing the point of a vacuum sealer. You are sealing, but not vacuum sealing. What you're doing can be accomplished with a freezer Zip-Lock bag. You need to get the air out, that's what vacuum sealing is.
She is never closing the first bag, so the air is still sucking it out of the first bag as well, when the vacuum sucks the air out it tightens the zip loc, if that zip loc is open, the air will get pushed out as the bag tightens, which would then be sucked out of the vacuum seal bag. I thought the same thing as well
Und tonnenweise Plastik, Plastik, Plastik, >>> ... soll auch die ganze Welt nachmachen☹ Big bizness.
Girl you're making it real hard on yourself just buy some precut Avid armor bags and be done with it
I do have some precut bags. That's what I usually buy but depending on what I'm sealing, I like to cut and seal my own, but I hear you.
Clicked to see a vacuum sealer comparison and instead watched a woman putting oats in jars and filling her pantry, not even using and vacuum whatsoever! Haha.
Ummm...ZMac...I showed how to use both vacuum sealers. You did not watch the entire video. Go back and take a look and you will see my thoughts about both of them.
I’ve had several different models of Foodsaver vacuum sealers over the last 15 years. czcams.com/users/postUgkxLarn2Zt7095D2lp3tN-bj5JtYPg3Wz2 I picked up the Nesco unit because it consistently receives top reviews it all across the Internet. Get this if you’re serious about vacuum sealing. This is the most have unit. The only tiny annoyance is not being able to lock the lid when you put it in storage that is such a tiny nitpick however, it’s almost worth not mentioning.
Exactly!
I just bought the Nesco one on Amazon and I’m waiting for it to arrive. It had the highest reviews and it looks easy to use. I read the instructions to,get an idea of how to use it and could make no sense of them. A CZcams video cleared it up. I was inspired to get it by my stepbrother who has a freezer full of homemade vegetable soup and various meats that he got on sale.
